Merrill ran the south and southwest boundaries of the Red Lake Indian Reservation in 1872–3, and these lines were resurveyed by A. M. Darling in 1885. Warren M. Adley ran the northwest boundary of this reservation from the intersection of the international boundary with the west side of the Lake of the Woods to the head of Thief river; and Nathan Butler ran the east boundary of this reservation in 1875, under contract with Gen. J., June 22, 1905. He served in the Civil War, attaining the rank of brigadier general; was for several years secretary of the Young Men's Christian Association in Utica, N. Y.; and through many years was corresponding secretary of the Oneida County Historical Society.
