Luther Darling (Benjamin-4, Timothy-3, John-2, John-1), born Mason, New Hampshire, December 19, 1804, paid poll tax in Jaffrey in 1839 and 1840. In the latter year he removed to Dublin, N.H., where he lived until 1848. From 1848 to 1860, inclusive, he was taxed in Jaffrey, following which he again lived in Dublin, where he died as the result of an accident, April 26, 1860. While living in Dublin, at the north end of Monadnock, he cleared and marked one of the first trails to the summit of the mountain called the Darling Trail. In June 1843 he was employed to carry a large number of tar barrels to the summit of the mountain to be used as a bonfire in the celebration of the completion of Bunker Hill Monument on the 17th of that month. According to tradition he used oxen to move them up to the lower part of the way, but for a considerable distance along the rocky upper slope they were carried on the backs of men. It was a herculean labor and, it is said, resulted in disappointment to the promoters who had planned to view the spectacle from the top of the newly dedicated monument. The night proved foggy and dark so that the fire was not lighted until two or three nights after the event, and in the absence of modern means of communication it is doubtful if any observers were waiting on the tower for the spectacle that had cost them dear.
