Well, I'm sittin' here playing solitaire Chapter Six Amazingly enough Monday went the way most Monday’s do. Late start, a little hectic but all in all it was all right. Daniel brought Brigid to the base with him and placed her in the day care center there after having Dr. Steinberg look at her. The good doctor was very surprised by how hale and strong Brigid seemed to be but gave Daniel many warnings and cautioned him on things to look for things which indicate Brigid would have special needs down the road. Daniel worked the day away in his office trying to decipher the secrets of the obelisk which had been brought here after the final battle. The black stone that Calla and David talked about was here with him. Daniel held it for a long time and he concentrated and thought about anyone and everyone he knew who was dead and gone; most especially his parents. Nothing happened. The stone couldn’t have been how David communicated with him, it had to be something different. If not, why couldn’t he see anyone else with it? After a while he gave up and put it down on the desk. Every hour or so he walked down to the day care center to peek in Brigid and make sure she was being well taken care of. She was of course, the day care center employed the finest people to take care of the children. He really had to get to work, artifacts and translations were piling up in his office and half of his staff were either confirmed dead or missing. He just couldn’t think about anything except Calla and the little girl he talked to last night, the one who was hiding from her Brother in the Underworld. All those years ago he was too young and he failed to help her and this was his chance to correct that for all of them and he wouldn’t let it go. Jack wandered in around noon and for a little lunch and a little chat. Daniel ran his plan or rather Ares’ idea past him as he’d done with Duncan last night. Jack had the exact same objections and suspicions. The biggest hang up seemed to be the utter lack of a body for the little girl trapped in the Underworld. The one who maybe had never really been alive and now almost certainly wasn’t really dead she was just stuck in some type of horrible never-ending limbo. “You understand that I have to do something, don’t you?” Daniel asked Jack over coffee in the commissary. “I understand your drive to do something, anything other than sitting there but this isn’t it, and it’s Ares’ idea, he always has an ulterior motive you know that.” Jack shook his head and crumpled up the napkin in his hand. “He wants her every bit as much as you do, you can’t trust him Daniel.” “So…what? I should do nothing? I should spend the next few years learning how to sword fight as Duncan MacLeod’s pupil and hoping that one day I’ll be strong enough, smart enough to kill Ares?” Daniel threw his own napkin onto the table. “She’ll hate me forever if I kill him.” “Ok, so there’s a definite point.” Jack agreed. “Still…” “Didn’t you hear me? That little girl SPOKE to me last night. She knew who I was, she called me Danny. She’s waiting for me.” No pressure there. “Maybe that was a trick.” “Calla wouldn’t…..” “Not Calla, you’re thinking way too small. Maybe it was Ares, some kind of trick he played using her.” Daniel shot him an exasperated look. “Look, you’re one of my best friends and your wife is a fantastic woman. I love her and those kids of yours to death. Calla’s got her problems but who doesn’t? You’ve been married so long and I don’t mean just married, you’re still in love after all this time and after all the absolute shit the two of you have been through. Forgive me for sounding corny here but that gives an old bachelor like me hope. To know that love like that really exists and it’s not just in fairy tales well it makes me believe that maybe Sam and I can have that too. I don’t want to see you do anything that’s going to jeopardize what you have. This is a trick, Daniel, at the very least Ares is setting you up for something. If you go into the Underworld and you don’t come back it’s over for Calla. She’s all his. Think about that before you ask me for a leave of absence, ok?” Three against one, even Calla thought it was some type of ruse. “Ok. So what do you think about David?” “Pay him of and he’ll go away, I guarantee it.” Jack said easily. “I can’t believe the two of you are even remotely related. You’re worried about him being around her, aren’t you?” “Wouldn’t you be?” Daniel asked downing the last few drops of coffee in his cup. “I still can’t believe she went to see him.” “Yeah me either.” Jack said in a low voice. “You can hate me for saying this if you want but, just so you get another perspective on this.” “Are you going to play Devil’s Advocate with me?” “Just for a minute so bear with me, ok? When he was alive….the first time around I mean….David was, well, he was an asshole.” Jack smiled. “He did spend twenty years in hell paying for his crimes and that’s got to be worse than twenty in any maximum security prison. There was a time Hades liked you and Calla, I imagine he made things real tough on our pal Davy for a long time.” “Are you trying to say that he’s paid his dues? That I should just wipe the slate clean and forget about it?” Jack held up his hands and the smile on his face turned to a frown. “No, not exactly. Be leery of him, keep an eye on him, but it is at least possible that….” “What? He really does love her? What the hell does my brother know about love anyway?” “He had the same start you did,” Jack reminded him and watched Daniel grimace. “All I’m saying that it’s possible he isn’t the threat he once was. That’s all. Just that it’s possible.” ** At the university Calla had three classes on the first day of the new semester. The earliest started at 8am and the last one let out just after six o’clock. All had gone well but in the hub-bub the children’s schedules hadn’t gotten switched. In her first period class was Colleen and in the second class were Nicholas and Annie. Tammy and Todd were in the last class of the day, her only Graduate Class and it was very small this year. Twelve people had been accepted but only five were able to return this semester as the others perished in the battle. Having so many new and so many familiar faces around her made the day pass more quickly than other days and Calla even found some enjoyment in it, that hadn’t happened since she lost her son. Though the days since then weren’t long, they were cold and dark even with Daniel near. Calla didn’t know what to say to him or how or if she should make it better for him. She’d lost children of Kanans’ and he never cared, in fact he celebrated though he tried to keep the truth of the deaths of the ones who’d been born alive secret from her. On her way off campus for the day she stopped in the office and asked again to have the schedules changed. The Dean, Martin Brunner, asked politely if she wouldn’t mind turning a blind eye to the rule for just a little while. It was important that the school get back up and running, in a few weeks or so they’d worry about such things if they had to. Walking out to the little red Integra she remembered Daniel wanted her to go in and see Doctor Adams today. Calla rubbed her receding and empty belly. Daniel was still angry with Adams but she wasn’t, she understood why he had done what he had even though she did not approve of it. Daniel? Calla opened the door to the car, pulled the seat forward and put her brief case and supplies and in the back seat. Daniel can you hear me? She’d left her cell phone at home. Hi, honey, I’m in a briefing, what’s wrong? Then you don’t want me to come in today? Nice try. Are you out of class now? Yes. I’ll see you in forty-five minutes. This is very important Calla. Then I will not disappoint you. The line clicked off and she slid in behind the wheel. Daniel was not going to make love with her again until Adams gave them the ok, she was sure of that. With recent events, David and all, Calla wasn’t sure how long after they got said ok Daniel would make her wait. He was very angry about her turning to his brother and Calla didn’t understand. She hadn’t done anything wrong, she didn’t have SEX with David, he didn’t even kiss her. On the outside, Calla supposed she could see Daniel’s point about her being foolish. Seeking David’s assistance was unwise but still there was no one else capable of answering the questions she had. The sun had already set and the roads were icing over once more, Calla drove slowly and stopped at the nearest CVS where she spent twenty minutes in the hair coloring aisle trying to find the exact color to cover the awful and expanding gray in her hair. Maybe if she looked younger he would be more attracted to her. After finding a bottle called Firelight she wandered over to the make aisle where she hemmed and hawed over colors once more and finally decided on a foundation, blush, mascara, eyeliner and lipstick. All together her purchases came to just over forty dollars and Calla used her debit card to pay for them. If there were time after he appointment with Adams perhaps she would stop by the salon Colleen liked and have her hair cut in a new fashion. Maybe a new outfit—her clothes were a bit loosely lately now that she’d lost the baby-- and a new fragrance. Perhaps then he would find her more attractive and he wouldn’t make her wait too long. Taking her package outside she headed for the base. Daniel was waiting for her at the last check point. “Where have you been? I talked to you almost two hours ago, Calla.” “Was it that long? I’m sorry.” She frowned. “I stopped at the drug store.” “For what?” “This and that.” She said with a smile and tried to kiss him but Daniel turned his head away and all she got was his cheek. “I’m sorry I upset you. I’m sorry for my weakness yesterday, you were gone this morning you didn’t let me explain.” Daniel put his hand under her elbow and started leading her away from the gate. “You explained last night. Come on, Adams is waiting for us.” “Stop it!” Calla cried out and wrangled her arm away from him. “Stop pushing me, stop rushing me. I’m trying to talk to you.” “Calla, we’re really late, we can talk later. I had to beg Adams to stick around until you go there, he should have gone home an hour ago, I can’t believe you’re so late.” Daniel huffed. “Fine,” Calla gave up, “whatever you wish, my Husband.” “Don’t do that,” Daniel warned. “Either I’m too dominate or too submissive, I just can’t get it right anymore can I?” Calla shook her head and determined not to cry even though she wanted to. Lately it was all she wanted to do, just lay down and cry. “I slipped, I’m sorry I disappointed you and I let you down. I hope you’ll forgive me. That’s all I wanted to say, Daniel. That’s it.” Daniel sighed and opened his arms. “Come here. I’m as ass, I’m sorry.” Calla came to him and he wrapped her up in his arms. “I’ve been calling you for the last hour and only getting your voice mail.” “I left the phone at home.” Calla explained slipping her arms around his waist. “I tried to find you with my mind too, Kitty, you didn’t answer.” “You were worried? About me?” “Don’t sound so surprised, I’d be devastated if anything happened to you, don’t you know that?” He kissed her hands. “I couldn’t find you and…the only time that happens is when—“ “When I’m high.” “Yeah.” Daniel nervously kissed her hands again. The harder drugs like heroin and cocaine seemed to dull her completely when she was doped up. They left her totally open and vulnerable, powerless, to anyone. When she smoked pot or took just a few of her favorite little green and blue pills that didn’t happen. Calla’s magick still worked and neither of the kids said they couldn’t get a hold of her mentally when she was stoned. David was so close and his conversation with Jack didn’t help Daniel’s nerves any. When he saw her standing there right as rain after having imagined every conceivable dark scenario and how they would find her brutalized and bloodied in a ditch somewhere those nerves grew to anger quickly. “You told me not to drink and that if I felt down to tell you and you would make me feel better, remember?” “Yes.” “You have to do the same thing. Last night you felt like everyone in your life that ever mattered lied to you and you were right, we all did. We all kept a big secret from you but you understand now, don’t you?” “I’m trying.” She whispered. “Me too,” Daniel admitted. “I love you honey. Come on, Adams is waiting.” “I’m sorry, Daniel, I guess we’re both just a little raw.” This time when she tried to kiss him Daniel didn’t turn away. They were on the base and other people were milling about, the deep kiss she’d been searching for these last few days would have to wait even longer and she would have to be satisfied with the brief peck. “I only meant to stop in the store for a minute.” That was true, she figured she would run in and run out but time slipped away from her. Her mind was slipping away from her. Less than fifteen minutes later and Calla was in a flimsy hospital Johnny having her blood pressure taken by Ms. Randall, Dr. Adams’ head nurse. This woman was also responsible for taking her height—as though she’d grown!—her weight and her temperature. All of these things she jotted down on the chart while Adams talked with Daniel in another room. He asked how she was if there was anything Daniel was particularly concerned with. Trusted or not he was her doctor and so Daniel told him about the little slip she had last night and the night before. “These things are common on the road to recovery.” Adams assured him. “The most important thing right now is to keep her going forward, so slipped, so what? Today is a new day and she can start all over again. It’s important that you do everything you can to encourage her in whatever ways you can find. Criticism will be taken most harshly by her or any addict in recovery at this point.” Daniel asked a question which was bothering. “My—someone told me that she will always be an addict, a junkie.” “That she’ll never recover?” Adams asked. Daniel nodded. “Technically she’ll always be in recovery. If you want to be mean and cold about it, yes she will always be a junkie but that doesn’t mean there’s no hope or that she’ll never stay clean.” Adams stood up. “Praise goes a lot further than condemnation, Daniel. Easier said than done some times.” “So I shouldn’t tell her that I’m disappointed in her?” The good doctor stood up, gathered a few items from his medicine cabinet and then the two of them started making their way to the examination room. “It’s a fine line I know. Don’t berate her but be honest this set back had to make you angry you can let her know that in fact she probably needs to know that but don’t beat her over the head with it.” Now they were standing outside the room where Calla was. “Listen, Daniel, you can wait out here. I assure you I have no amorous intentions toward Calla.” Daniel wanted to believe him but at the same time he didn’t want to take any chances so he walked into the room to be with her. Under the best of circumstances Calla hated these exams. “We’re going to take some blood today you’re not going to freak out on me, are you?” Adams asked putting on two gloves. “No,” Calla mumbled looking at Daniel he took her free hand while Adams put the rubber tubing around her upper arm. She looked right at Daniel and not the needle while Adams drew three vials of blood from her. “Very good, thank you.” He marked them and handed them off to the nurse to take to the lab. “Quickly on those two, I want the results before they leave.” He told her as he pointed out two vials. “All right, Calla, come and lay down on the new fancy bed.” Adams gestured across the room to a new examination bed. Calla laid down on the soft black leather bed and suddenly it starting making noises they scared and she jumped off. “Nope, back down.” Adams told her. “It won’t bite.” Once more she laid down and listened while the doctor explained that the bed was reading her temperature, respiration rate, blood pressure, pulse, blood oxygen levels, hydration levels and more. He said that it was fast making the boring tests she’d just undergone obsolete. It even displayed her height and weight. Adams draped a sheet over her lower half while raising the hospital Johnny. “We’ll start with an ultrasound.” He informed her. “You remember this part, just a little cold and gooy.” He said as he squirted a small puddle of fluid which always reminded her of KY onto her belly and lower. The numbers on the display over her head began to climb at a steady rate. Adams said nothing as he ran the hand device over her skin and looking at the display on the screen. After the goo warmed up it wasn’t so bad. Calla let out a sigh and the numbers went more as she turned to the screen and didn’t see a baby this time. The ultrasound over, Adams wiped the remaining fluid off of her and then the stirrups magickally appeared at the foot of the fancy bed. “Not your favorite part, I know. Come on, put your feet up here.” The doctor encouraged. “It won’t take long.” At the mention of the action all of the displays went up. It was obvious the idea scared the shit out of her but Calla put her feet up where she was supposed to and she laid there, not breathing, not moving, staring straight ahead and waiting for it to be over. Hopefully before she left here tonight the doctor would tell Daniel they could engage in love making once more. The cold speculum slide inside, the little lights lit up the little numbers went up, the speculum opened and they went up more still. Adams slid his fingers into her and Daniel thought the damn display would explode, the numbers went up so quickly he couldn’t keep up with them. The one which displayed her heart rate started flashing in red numbers. “It’s ok, Kitty.” Daniel whispered. The flashing red light turned yellow. Daniel took her chilly hand in his warm one. “I’m right here.” The flashing yellow light and the numbers and displays which had begun to go wildly off the chart all backed off and she started to breathe again. The numbers went down so quickly that Adams stopped working between her legs to watch them amazed by what he was witnessing. He was just thinking he was going to have to give her a shot to calm her down but that wasn’t necessary. The sound of Daniel’s voice was enough to make the numbers stop climbing and the touch of his hand regulated them all. “That’s incredible. Does that always happen?” Daniel didn’t know what to say but Calla did. “Yes. He always makes me feel better.” Adams wanted to try a little experiment. “Let go of her hand.” Calla shook her head but Daniel let go. Adams moved his fingers inside of her and the numbers shot back up as she cringed. Daniel took her hand once more and they dropped back to normal even though Adams continued to examine her. “Well that really is impressive, we’ll have to investigate that some time down the road.” He smiled, removed his hand and the speculum. “Go ahead and get dressed Calla. I’m going to check on the results of your blood tests.” Hanging around the doctor’s office wasn’t the way Calla wanted to spend her evening. “Maybe you should go get Brigid, he won’t be long and then we’ll be ready to go home.” She said to Daniel. “We’ll get her on the way out.” He brushed the hair away from her face. “Scared?” “A little.” She admitted. “What if I’m not healthy? What if he says we still can’t make love?” “It hasn’t been that long, Cal.” Though for a couple who was very accustomed to expressing their love for each other at least twice a day the almost two weeks which had passed since they last made love—and were interrupted by Lord Ares—seemed like a lifetime ago. “If we still can’t it’ll be ok, we’ll just wait a little longer.” Daniel was more concerned with what her blood tests were going to show. His fears were not unfounded. Adams came back into the room a half hour after he left and he did not look happy. “You’re not taking very good care of yourself, are you Calla? You’ve lost almost eleven pounds. Your iron count is way down. Your blood pressure is way up. “ “The Xerinium? I miss hugging my Daughter.” She mumbled. “That’s some tough stuff.” Adams remarked and sat down. “The levels aren’t dropping, Calla. In fact, they’re growing. It’s making you tired isn’t it?” Well, there was her answer. Hugging Colleen and Lilly was out of the question for the time being. She couldn’t run the risk of transferring this to either of them. “Is that what’s doing it? I thought it was my inability to sleep which was tiring me so. Though I did sleep well last night. Daniel made me hot cocoa and I was out like a light.” Adams supposed the heroin which of course turns to morphine in the system probably had a good deal to do with the sleep she got last night but there was no sense in pointing that out. “Not sleeping?” Xerinium for Olympians was a highly toxic heavy metal and her body was having a very difficult time fighting the effects. In fact from the latest results it was clear the metal was attaching itself to blood cells and traveling throughout her small body. From there, if it acted like other heavy metals did your average human, it would attach to her organs including her brain, liver, heart, and kidneys. It would effect her nervous systems, immune system and digestive system and so far Adams had been unable to find a way to cleanse her of it. “I can give you a prescription for that.” “No,” Daniel said quickly, “the hot cocoa I made last night seemed to do the trick.” She looked up and gave him an innocent smile. Looking down at her he understood she didn’t remember anything after initially falling asleep last night, Calla didn’t remember the little girl who spoke to him last night or the conversation they had after. “Have you been having mood swings lately?” Adams asked as he scratched notes on the chart. “Have I?” She asked Daniel. “She’s a little moody,” Daniel said softly, “I thought it was the hormone levels dropping in her body.” “Could be.” Adams agreed. “So you can’t sleep and you’re irritable. How’s your head lately, Calla?” He stressed her name because he wanted her to answer but right in front of his eyes she looked to her husband for the answer to the question. “Do you find yourself forgetting things or just sort of blanking out?” Even though he knew the answer to the question was ‘yes’ Daniel purposefully avoided answering for her because he wanted to hear what she said. “A little fuzzy,” Calla admitted. “My classes went well today, perhaps it’s because I got so much sleep last night.” “How’s your appetite?” That was stupid question given that she’d lost so much weight in such a short period of time. “Not well,” Calla admitted. “I get hungry but then I don’t want to eat so I don’t.” “Because you’re throwing it up?” Adams asked. Calla bit down on her bottom lip and nodded. “What? Kitty, why didn’t you tell me?” Daniel asked. “I don’t want you to….” “Worry, yeah, I know.” He kissed her forehead. “How long have you been sick?” The last thing he saw her eat was the cheesecake….which she more or less just licked off of him….back in Scotland. Before that she did have a big steaming bowl of the mutton stew. All of that was almost a week ago. “I don’t know, a few days, not long.” She said with a smile, well it tried to be a smile anyway. Calla leaned in toward the doctor. “Can we make love now?” Here he was telling her how sick she was and trying to find a way to help her and all Calla Jackson wanted to know was could she resume marital relations with her husband. “I’d rather you waited a little bit but if you take it slow I don’t see any reason why you can’t.” That made her smile a genuine smile. “Can we go now?” That was quick. From the look in her eyes Calla intended to get Doctor Jackson home and fuck his brains out. “Slow.” Adams reiterated. “I want you to come back next week for another blood test.” “All right, but not an exam.” Calla said. “Deal.” Adams said rising from his seat. “Go home, or go by the drug store and get yourself something for your stomach, if you’re feeling ill after you eat I can give you some Compazine, it will help ease your stomach. While you’re there pick up a pack of condoms.” Adams advised. Daniel watched her cringe, she hated birth control and they’d been lucky enough not to have to worry about it for a long time. That was a terrible way to think of the many years she was barren but without the risk of pregnancy they did have some wild nights. “No,” she muttered. “Can’t we use something else? Why do we have to….” “I want to minimize the risk of your getting pregnant right now, Calla. It wouldn’t be wise.” Adams turned to look up at Daniel. “Does it have to be condoms?” Daniel asked. It wasn’t just birth control, Calla hated and wouldn’t allow anything to…come between them…..in that way. “Can’t we use something else?” “Sure,” Adams agreed. “I can give you a prescription for the pill or something else but you’ll still have to use some type of barrier for a few weeks or a month.” Calla put her head in her hands and started rocking back and forth, this was not the news she wanted. Adams opened his mouth but Daniel moved his hand in the air to silence him. “It’s all right, Kitty, we’ll figure something out.” Running her face back up through her hands but still rocking she said. “I could just smoke mansis…for my stomach.” Not to mention she could use a big fat blunt right about now. “I’m sorry Daniel.” Calla looked up at him quickly. “I didn’t mean it.” “Mansis?” Adams asked. “Pot.” Daniel explained. “Yep that will do it,” Adams agreed. “It’ll make you hungry and it will help keep the food down. If you have problems sleeping, tell Daniel and I’ll give him the prescription for you.” While Calla finished getting dressed Daniel cornered Adams in the hall. “I can’t believe you said that to her. You know she’s a drug addict. How could you tell her smoking pot is ok?” “I’m sure Janet Frasier must have told that marijuana is actually beneficial for her, didn’t she?” “That was years ago.” And for all of those years he let her smoke in fact he even joined her now and then. “Things are different now as all know,” he cleared his throat, “she’s a junkie.” That was a tough one to spit out. “Physiologically things aren’t different” Adams told him. “Look if she smokes a few joints a day it will do her more good than harm. It’s been decriminalized and the Medical Community does recognize many beneficial effects of marijuana, it’s not like I’m suggesting you go out and buy her an eight-ball of cocaine. It’ll be as good for her nerves as it will be for her stomach.” “How sick is she?” Daniel asked with a sigh. Calla, up until the night before last, hadn’t engaged in any drug activity for several months. Maybe the lack of THC in her system had something to do with why she wasn’t fighting off the metal. “I don’t know, Daniel. It all depends on how the Xerinium moves in her system and how soon I can find out why the numbers are actually growing. If nothing else the level should simply stay the same.” “She’s going to get worse?” “Commonly, the longer the metal stays in ones system the worse things get even if the levels don’t rise but her levels have risen. Is she still being exposed to Xerinium?” Daniel shook his head. “No, I mean, I don’t think so.” “We’ll know more after I run a few more tests. Right now just take her home, from the look in her eyes, if you think you can possibly manage it—which shouldn’t be too hard—go home, smoke a joint, make love to your wife.” Adams suggested. “Why aren’t I healing her? What’s wrong with me?” “I wouldn’t know, I haven’t examined you and all I have to go on regarding the bond between the two of you are old notes left behind by Dr. O’Gara. Maybe it’s because she doesn’t have an open wound. Maybe it’s because the levels are low enough to not be immediately toxic. You’re going to have to be patient, Daniel, until I get those test results back some time tomorrow I won’t know how to treat her. There are just too many variables here, we’ll know more in a few days.” Adams walked away. Running a hand through his hair and taking a moment in the hall Daniel wasn’t sure what to do. They got the ok and Calla was going be pretty insistent about that once they got into bed tonight. She was still mad at him, how could she not be, but that would not effect her sex drive. With so much going on Daniel found he didn’t needed the added pressure of having to perform. Calla got tired of waiting so she pulled on her coat and walked out the door to see Daniel standing just beyond it with a blank expression. “Beautiful?” She asked slipping her arm around his waist. “What did he say? I am sick, aren’t I?” “A little,” Daniel said and put an arm around her shoulders. “Nothing to worry about, ok?” “The Xerinium?” They started to walk away from the doctors’ office. “Tell me, please.” “Yeah,” he said in a pained voice. What a bitch it would be if she were to become very ill. If Eros were to have the last laugh and take her down to Hades with him from beyond the grave. “It’s going to be ok, you’re going to fight this off. We’re going to fight this off.” She wanted to believe him but she didn’t. The look in his eyes and the tone of his voice, Daniel was worried very worried. “Sure it is.” Calla said. “No sweat, right?” “Right.” Daniel agreed. “Why don’t you go get Brigid and I’ll meet you back at the house?” Calla suggested. “Ok.” Calla walked away without kissing him or telling him she loved him. Daniel stood there watching her walk away waiting for her to turn around and wave to him. She always turned around and gave him a wave and blown kiss as she walked off. Not this time. Calla kept going down the hall with an unsteady gait. An icy fist grabbed his heart even the air in his lungs went cold. Daniel went after her. “Hey,” He turned her around. “I love you.” She looked at up with green orbs which were startled at first then uncomprehending and distant. “I said; I love you.” For one very long dark moment the idea that she didn’t know him went through his head. Standing there in his hold staring up into those eyes that were so familiar to her, Calla tried to find the proper response. She knew there was one and that the man with the blue eyes was waiting, almost begging for her to say it. “I love you too.” There, that was it. “Daniel.” Right again. Good job! “Why don’t you let me drive home? We’ll get your car tomorrow.” Walking out to the parking lot Daniel saw that she parked next to him. “Is there anything in your car you need to take home tonight? Papers? Lesson plans?” Daniel asked strapping Brigid into the back seat of the Jag. Calla hadn’t assigned any real work today so she didn’t have any papers and tomorrow’s lessons were in her desk at the university but there was a package she needed and she fished it off of the passenger seat of the Integra before she got into Daniel’s car.
