There’s danger out tonight..the man is on the prowl Chapter Ten Just around eleven o’clock David found he couldn’t sit in the motel room any longer. The walls were closing in and he had the most undeniably real feeling that he was going to DROWN if he stayed there one more minute. One thing he hadn’t bought yet was a winter coat and while the sun was bright the temperature was still hovering around forty. With a quick pace he walked to the nearest strip mall which happened to be home to Good Will store, always a bums favorite place to shop if the Good Will box was empty. David bought a good heavy pea coat for twenty bucks. Before he exited the store he stopped to count the money in his wallet. Danny gave him $500.00 start up money and he used $150.00 of it for three nights in the motel. Another $75.00 or so went for entertainment of various types. Somewhere around the same for food which left him with just around $350.00. What was there to do in this little town in the middle of a work day? Not a hell of a lot within walking distance. He had cash, why walk when he could ride? Outside and down the mall a bit stood a pay phone, pulling the collar up around his neck David walked out and called a cab. Standing there freezing and smoking a Marlboro a guy around forty came out of the coffee shop with a white paper bag in his hands. His eyes lit up and he smiled, with a hand in the air he shouted out. “Hi, Doctor Jackson.” Shit. Then again this could be fun. “Hi,” David returned trying his best to sound like Daniel while still puffing on the cigarette. The guy looked familiar but he couldn’t say why right away. “I didn’t know you smoked.” “I try not to do it often, bad habit.” That didn’t stop him from smoking the one in his hand. “How’s Calla? Is she coming in to see me? I got those test results back.” Oooo. Callie’s doctor. That was it! Yeah, sure it was. David met him outside the SGC the day Callie said he could keep his life and then he’d stood in the exam room watching this twerp because for some unexplained reason the man could not be trusted alone with Danny’s wife. David knew he should say something along the lines of ‘wrong fella, dude, Danny’s probably at work’ but why ruin the moment? “What’d they show?” “I’d like to discuss it with both of you.” Dr. Adams said. “When did you start growing the beard?” Shit again. “A few days ago.” He pitched the Marlboro to the curve and squashed it under his sneaker. “She all right?” Adams walked to a nearby car. “I didn’t notice it yesterday. Need a lift?” “No, thank you. You didn’t answer me, doc. She is my wife, I have to right to know if something is wrong. Is Calla all right?” David didn’t like the way the guy was looking at him. Maybe the jig was up but maybe this guy was waiting to hit Danny with a bucketful of bad news. The car door opened and Adams put the bag on the passenger seat as he climbed in behind the wheel. “She isn’t in any immediate danger but you know we need to keep an eye on things. Have you two started…..” he moved his hand in the air to motion a continuance of that sentence. David wasn’t a genius but then again right now he didn’t have to be. Were Danny and Calla doing it? “Yes.” “How’d it go? I know you hate me asking these questions but I am her doctor.” Oh yeah, Danny probably really hated these types of questions and David wasn’t finding them none too comfortable either. What was there to keep an eye on? Neither Danny nor Callie said anything about her being sick. She did look a little tired, a little pale yesterday. They were going to keep him out of the loop. Well, that wasn’t fair now was it? No sir, it was not. “It went…it went all right.” David stammered hoping he put enough strained embarrassment into it to sound like his brother. “I’m getting a little tired of asking ya, doc. What’s the matta’ with my wife?” There was a yellow cab pulling into the parking lot and the driver was looking for him. Dr. Adams remembered meeting David Jackson and he didn’t like the feeling he got from the guy then. It was sort the same feeling coming off of this guy now so maybe this guy wasn’t Daniel Jackson. Adams turned the key and pulled the seatbelt across his body. “Come by my office when we get back to the base, I’ll fill you in.” If he was wrong he’d apologize back on the base and if he was right he’d tell Daniel Jackson that his brother was stealing his identity. Not waiting any longer Dr. Adams backed out of the parking lot and drove off but he saw the cab pull up to Dr. Jackson and watched Dr. Jackson climb in. “You’re not Daniel Jackson.” As soon as he got back to the base he’d have to find the real Daniel Jackson and have a conversation with him. “One North Cemetery Drive.” David said as he climbed into the backseat of the cab knowing he’d have some explaining to do. That guy was going to go straight to Danny and tell him what was going on. Right now that didn’t matter, if Callie was sick he was damn sure gonna find out about it and he wasn’t waiting for the shouting to end. A little past noon and the cab was pulling down the street. “Don’t go up the drive, go up the street.” David said from the back seat noticing Callie’s car in the drive way. “Yeah, right up there pull over.” No other car. No hot rod, no Saturn and no Jag. “Wot dew I owe ya?” “15.68” the cabbie said. David handed him a twenty and got out. Out of the line of sight of the windows in Danny’s house, David crossed the road and made his way through a stretch of wooded land between the road and the house. Staying away from the windows and keeping an eye on the doors David walked right up to the backdoor unnoticed. He went to knock, he really did, the back door was open so he went instead. “Callie?” David called out and got no answer. “Callie yew shouldn’t leave da door open like dat.” Silence. That was her little Integra. On the table was her purse. “Callie?” David called out one more time and received nothing in return. “Where are yew gurl?” Walking through the kitchen he looked in the living room, there was her big portfolio/brief case thing by the door, keys on the hall table. She was at home. It was too cold to go for a walk and if she had that little Brigid with her well that baby wasn’t supposed to be out in the frigid weather. Slowly he crept up the stairs listening for any sign of life. It wasn’t long before the sounds of a running shower came to his ears. David continued up the stairs. In Dannys’ bedroom was an empty bassinet. Callie let the baby in their room, well, bless her heart. The door to the bathroom was partly open, steam was coming through and the sound of the shower was louder. Another sound joined it, Callie was singing. I’d Like To Teach The World To Sing. For a few seconds he was eight again and watching the old Coca-Cola commercial with all the good looking young hippies and flower power children singing about how a Coke and a song could solve all the problems of the world. If only it were that easy that would be just grand. David dropped the heavy blue pea coat to the floor and continued on toward the partially open door. Gingerly laying his fingertips on it, David pushed the door wider. From this view point he saw her in the bathroom mirror. Callie was in the shower, singing, washing her hair. The air was heavy with steam it coated the mirror and the shower doors keeping the scent of honey & almonds down low at nose level. Her silhouette, the scent, the steam, and just knowing she was so close to his grasp made him hard. The doc said she could have sex, he must have, why else would he ask how it’d gone otherwise? So that meant she was ready and it wouldn’t hurt if he just climbed out of the rest of his clothes and got in the shower behind her. Now he was sorry he’d started growing his beard again but he could talk to her in Danny’s voice, keep her from turning around. Callie. She had that sweet little body with the sweet little voice rising from it and singing as though she hadn’t a care in the world. “That's the song I hear Let the world sing today A song of peace that echoes on “Callie,” he muttered under his breath and opened the door a little wider. Temptation is an evil thing especially for a man with a mind like David Jackson’s. As much he wanted his brother’s wife, the one thing he did NOT want more than that was to buy himself a Return Ticket To Hell. It was a much more effective future deterrent than prison ever was. With his heart pounding in his chest and his mind racing with a thousand wicked thoughts David backed away from the door, past the empty bassinet and out of the bedroom just as the shower shut off. Quietly creeping down the stairs he decided to wait in the living room until she was done dressing. He didn’t come over here for nothing. David intended to find out what was wrong with her and just how serious it was. Later when he was alone at the Motel 6 he’d bang one out, a good stiff one, but not now there were more important things to deal with than his stiff cock. Halfway down the stairs the telephone began to ring. End Chapter Ten Of This story and all stories in the Barters N Garters Library are copyrighted to Lisa Beth Darling these stories
