Thy Brother's Wife
There's something happening here Chapter Eleven “Daniel.” Dr. Adams called out hesitantly as he saw the man walking down the hall. This time he was sure it was Daniel because the man was wearing an SGC uniform. “How are you?” This was the moment of truth. Who had he spoken to earlier today? “I’m well.” Daniel stammered. “I know you’re going to tell me to bring Calla in for those test results, aren’t you?” “Yes.” Adams agreed noticing there wasn’t a spec of facial hair on Daniel Jackson. “Did you shave?” “Excuse me?” “Nothing, I thought you were growing a beard.” “Beard?” That settled it. “Ok, so I have something I need to tell you.” Adams said in a puff of air and wondered how to phrase what came next. There really wasn’t any other way to put it. “I guess I ran into your brother earlier today. Now, I thought he was you and he didn’t correct me.” Daniel felt the blood rush away from his face. “Of course he didn’t. What else?” “I might have given him some information about Calla’s health. Did he know she’s ill?” “No, I take it he does now.” “Yes. But he doesn’t know what’s wrong with her, I started to get the feeling he wasn’t you so I backed off the conversation.” “Thanks. Where’d you see him?” “I ran into him outside of Emma’s Coffee House, do you know it?” Daniel didn’t have to stop and think about it, they often went to Emma’s for a cup of coffee and slice of pie if they were out tooling around on a Sunday afternoon. Emma’s was right near the Motel 6. “Yes, I know where it is. How long ago?” “Forty minutes maybe an hour. When I realized he probably wasn’t you, I didn’t say anything about it, I just got in my car and drove off. Your brother got into a cab just afterward.” Daniel started away from Adams. “Daniel?” Adams called after him. “I don’t like what I’m seeing in her test results, she needs to come in again. I have some time later today.” Adams suggested and hoped Daniel would take the bait but he didn’t. “And…..did the two of you? Last night….” “I’ll bring her in today or tomorrow.” Daniel said taking a few steps toward Adams, like him or not the guy was still her doctor. “Yes, we did.” Daniel informed him in a low voice. “It went fine, I figure that’s the next question.” Yep, except for a few minor bumps, everything went very well. “I have to get back to my office.” Without saying anything else Daniel walked away at a very brisk pace. He had to get to the phone and call home something told him that’s where Davy went. Daniel was sure of it. ** It had been an absolutely horrible day that much Calla knew but what she didn’t know was why. No, she didn’t remember the awful feeling she had in the pit of her stomach as she tried to get Brigid into the university day care; having to explain where the new baby came from in the fact of just telling everyone that she’d lost her son proved a bit more than Calla thought it would. Then she’d gone to see Ares, to have it out with him once and for all but he wasn’t there and his women would not tell her where he’d gone nor allow her to wait for his return. The phone stopped ringing before she could get to it, Calla looked at the caller-id to see a telephone number which was both familiar and foreign. On her bed was a man’s winter coat. In the air hung a strange scent. Calla picked up the heavy pea coat and took a deep sniff. Cigarette smoke. The coat and the smell had not been here before she got in the shower she was almost certain of that as she held the towel tighter around her small frame. “What the fuck are you doing here?” “Get off’a me boy.” Two different voices. There were two different men in her house. Where did they come from and what did they want? They must have broken in. They were going to steal from her! Or worse! In the night stand there was a weapon. Calla opened the drawer and took out the handgun. Clicking off the safety and pointing the gun toward the floor she crept out into the hall and down the steps. There at the base of the stairs were the two men she heard arguing. They were standing toe to toe shoving each other. One was much taller and broader, not to mention younger, than the other one. “Get outta this house! You’re not wanted here!” “Callie’s sick and I ain’t leavin’ ‘til I find out wot’s wrong wit her.” “Stop it!” She shouted from midway down the stairs. “What the hell is going on? How did you get in my house?” “He broke in!” Nicholas accused while holding David by the scruff of his collar. “Tell him ta back off, Callie, I ain’t done nuttin’!” David demanded but Nicholas wasn’t listening and neither of them was looking at her. Nicholas shoved David hard. David, who’d been around the block at least as often as Daniel, and wasn’t afraid of the big guy shoved him back. “Get off me, boy! Don’t make me say it again!” He shouted taking a step toward Nicholas. “Both of you stop it!” Calla shouted and leveled the gun at them. “Who are you? Why are you in my house?” ** Standing in his office with the phone in his hand Daniel suddenly realized there wasn’t any time to call or to drive. Something at home was spinning swiftly out of control. If he didn’t get there right fucking now it was going to get worse and something terrible was about to happen.. There was no time to get Brigid. No time to think. If he were lucky he had just enough to act. Dropping the phone and grabbing the brief case he disappeared from his office in full view of his staff but Daniel didn’t care. ** “Who am….” Nicholas took stern note of the gun in his Mother’s hand. “It’s me, Mom, it’s Nick.” There was no recognition in her eyes. “I’m your Son. Mom?” Nicholas reached out for her. The movement—by such a large and unfamiliar young man-- startled Calla. “Get away.” She waved the gun in the air and backed up one step. “Get out of my house, there’s nothing for either of you here. Just go away!” Looked like Umpa and Zeus were right she was sicker than he thought. In fact there was something so terribly wrong with her that it frightened Nicholas and made his bones tingle with dread. Standing there gazing at those absent eyes he was positive his own Mother didn’t know him. Worse still, she would shoot both of them. “Give me the gun, Ma.” He said in a soft voice and slowly reached out toward her. “Uncle David and me, we’re not gonna fight no more, ok? Just gimmie the gun, Ma.” Nick continued reaching for the weapon but she kept brandishing it in his direction. “Lis’en ta da boy, Callie.” David encouraged. “We’se done arguin’, it’s all ov’a now. Why dun ya jus give him the gun?” That one! He was bad! That meant the other one must be bad too! Those green eyes, the one that were blank and listless suddenly went wild as they darted from David to Nicholas and back. “No, get out, get, get, get away from me.” Holding on to the banister with one hand and the gun with the other she kicked at Nicholas. “Get away from me!” Standing there looking up at her in an utter state of panic Nick and David knew the gun in her hands was going to go off and since the safety wasn’t engaged it seemed there was no doubt about that. The only question was when and who was going to get shot. “Come on, Mom, just gimmie the gun. Everything’s ok now.” “Yew dun wanna shoot nobody, Callie.” David said in an easy tone. “I know yew gurl, yew dun never wanna hurt nobody. C’mon, li’l darlin’, jus give da boy da gun.” Filled with fear and understanding the fragility of his Mother’s mind when Nick saw an opportunity to get the gun away from her he took it. While David had her eyes focused on him he grabbed for the gun. Standing 6’8 Nicholas possessed a very long reach as such he had no trouble laying his hand on the barrel. In fact he had less trouble than he thought he would and that turned out to be a major problem. It all happened to fast! All he wanted to do was get it out of her hand! Nick yanked the gun upward but she didn’t let go. So often he forgot how big he was though he tried not to. He tried never to forget that he was a galoot, a big ungraceful oaf. An ogre. In his panicked effort to wrench the gun free of her hand he twisted it, he twisted the gun but, just like last summer her wrist snapped under the pressure of his hand. Before he could pull it away the gun she was using to hold them at bay turned and pointed toward her… ……BANG….. The white towel around her slender body became stained with blood, Calla went down to her knees, the gun dropped from her hand, and she fell face first down the few remaining steps between her and Nicholas. Daniel appeared at the foot of the steps too late to stop what was happening but not late to witness it. “NO! Kitty!” End Of Chapter Eleven and Continue to This story and all stories in are copyrighted to Lisa Beth Darling these stories
