Chapter Fifteen

For not the last time that night, Calla lay between them with her head tucked under Daniel’s chin and her face pressed to his chest and David pressed up against her back. “Angry?” Her voice was small while her finger tip traced a delicate trail through the sweat glistening on his skin.

“No.” The two brothers were still holding each other’s gaze as well as the woman between them. Daniel held up his finger. Watch this, he mouthed. “More?”

“Please. Yes.” She started covering the space under her cheek with soft kisses. “More.”

Watching the hair covering her head as it bounced side to side with the movement of her mouth David saw that there was far less gray there now and much more auburn. “Jus’ a li’l Wild One, ain’t cha, gurl?” David huffed with a wide grin and stroked her hair. “Wild little colt, strong and free.”

“I think we created a monster.”

“Yew don’say, Doctor Frankenstein.” David agreed. “Well now that we done woke her up….”

“We should feed her,” Daniel kissed her quickly pulling away before she could pull him closer. “And I do mean food.”

At first David balked but then again. “My head is a little light,” he cracked. “Maybe a bite is a good idear.”

“My Lord?”

“We have all night,” he looked over at the clock to see how long that was. Turned out to be somewhere between five and six more hours. “I got plans for you, so fuel up.” Daniel warned turned back to her. “You go down to the kitchen and find us something to eat.” He said to David as she started kissing him again.

“Oh yeah?” David asked raising himself up on one elbow and continuing to stroke her back. “Wot are yew gonna do?”

Daniel opened the night stand and pulled out the bag of weed.

“Ah, now a man after my own heart.” David complimented.

Calla stopped kissing him and looked up. “You always do have the best ideas, My Lord.”

“Don’t you forget it.” Bending forward he kissed her long and deep. “I got plans for you.” He said again and pushed her down against the pillows. “So rest while you can.”

Wanting to stay in the bed with her and tell Danny to go fetch the food, David reminded himself that they were the Husband and the Wife and he was just along for the ride tonight. More than that, he’d like to be invited back when she wasn’t sick. They probably had a few things to discuss in his absence anyway. Getting out of the bed David pulled the covers over her. “I’d listen ta the man, I think he knows what he’s talkin’ about.” On his way out of the door David grabbed Daniel’s robe and slide into it as if it were his own. Just like he’d slid into Daniel’s wife and would several more times before the dawn broke and the kids returned home. All the way down to the kitchen he whistled the theme to Gilligan’s Island.

Tired and very relaxed Calla looked up at Daniel who was rolling a very fat joint. “Are you sure you’re not angry?”

“Positive.” Licking the paper he finished twisting it between his fingers then laid it down on the night stand and tucked the bag away. Maybe she wasn’t really asking if he was angry but…. “Are you all right, Kitty? We didn’t hurt you, did we?”

“I’m fine.”

“You wouldn’t tell me anyway.” He let go of her hand realizing jealousy was already creeping into his mind. Daniel did his best to hold it back. “How do you feel? Stronger?”

“It wasn’t a dream, Daniel. It was real. You felt it we all did. I don’t want it to change us. Please.” She reached out and touched his arm. “I love you. Only you.”

Daniel thought about it for a moment. “Only me?” His eyes wandered off toward the door. “You said it, Kitty, we all felt it. You can’t sit there and tell me that happens with someone you don’t love.”

“I do not love him.” She sat up and took his face in her hands. “I will never love him. This is what frightened me that you would think that I love him when I do not. I love you. No other man will ever take your place…will never compare to you. My heart belongs only to you. Please tell me you do believe this.” Clinging even tight to his grip she confessed, “I care for him now, that’s true, but only because of his connection to you. In the name of our children, Daniel, you will never come home to find me with him. I will never turn to him and away from you. Never.”

Taking her hands away from his face and holding them tightly he held her stare. Up until this second those thoughts had yet to cross his mind but now that they had it seemed he couldn’t think of anything else. Calla was right David was different now that was self-evident. He wasn’t the raping marauding murderer he had been in a previous life.

David Jackson had something almost all other Mortal Men did not; he had been reborn of hell’s fires with a clean soul and a new heart. And, if Daniel could go back in time fifty years or so, to that mall in Athens and if he could change the events which transpired, if David had come with him instead of going off in search of video games and they both stumbled upon the little red haired girl staring in the Victoria’s Secret window…..maybe things would be different today. Maybe David never would have gone down that lonely criminal road. Maybe he would have had the same hope Daniel did. The hope that, no matter what hell lay ahead, he would find true love one day and he would do anything to hold on to it. Maybe then she would lay in David’s bed and not Daniel’s. Maybe she was supposed to lay in both beds. “I love you, Kitty, nothing will ever change that. What if I tell you I’m going to accept him?” Maybe she didn’t love David but at least some small part of her trusted him to some degree and Daniel had no viable option other than to accept that even if it was still against his better judgment.

“As Sa’Tan?” It was the first time anyone said it out loud and she wasn’t altogether comfortable with the idea. Then again, as they’d already agreed, they all felt it. For better or worse it really did seem the thing to do. “All right. Though I do not know why you should feel it necessary after all these years to have a Second. I still do not love him.”

Looking in her eyes he knew he could push her from now until Kingdom Come and Calla would not admit to even the slightest possibility that she needed David. Not to him anyway. “OK, honey.” He kissed her hands. She felt something for David and it probably wasn’t love but she didn’t detest him anymore either. It was just as well since it seemed he was going to be hanging for a while. Still, it seemed so very important to her that he believe she would never love David and in his heart he knew that just wasn’t true. What she meant was I’ll never love him MORE than you, but she couldn’t bring herself to say it. “I believe you.” He looked down at his hands. “Why didn’t you tell me? All these years, how could you keep that from me?”

“What?” She asked looking at the same set of hands with their long slender fingers.

“When we were Unbound and Maeve said you would live free, I thought that meant you wouldn’t need me anymore, that you wouldn’t draw from me anymore. But you do and not just a little bit, you never stopped needing me. Why didn’t you tell me? That’s why you get a little…ah….flighty, when I go away, huh? Everyone always said I was your favorite drug.”

“So you are. Why didn’t I tell you?” Calla asked. “How could you forget?”

Had he forgotten? Maybe. Maybe it became so much a part of his everyday existence that it just faded into the background of his life and he forgot all about it. Tonight, seeing it on David’s face, hearing Davy describe what he felt it was like experiencing the Connection the very first time Daniel felt it. The very first time he was amazed by her. That was so damn long ago now. Since Hartley, well, no, since Daniel became Immortal she lost not only her sure-fire healing method but her little battery charger as well. His touch no longer brought her all that she needed now it took two of them to fill her. Not always, no not always, just now and then, on Special Occasions when she was especially depleted. Life hadn’t stopped throwing hard curve balls since last June. Hartley, the drugs, the whirl-wind tour of the world, Bacchus, his women, opening long closed magickal places and losing their son just to name a few of the highlights. Calla had it pretty rough for a long time. Daniel was exhausted from it all and he didn’t have to expend the energy she did and he hadn’t lost the things she had.

“I’m sorry I have disappointed you.” Though, of course, I am always ready to do so. Now the consequences of the evening would begin to set in and things would get ugly. Calla started building up her inner strength to be ready when the yelling started. “I’m always doing that…why can’t I be normal? Like all the other women?”

Because you’re a Goddess, but that wasn’t the answer she was looking for and it was always the last thing she wanted to be reminded of. “No you didn’t disappoint me.” Daniel brought her hand to his lips. “You’re right, I forgot. I don’t…I don’t think any less of you, Calla.” Just in case she didn’t understand what he was telling her. “I don’t think you’re a…whore….” He forced the ugly word out of his mouth, “or anything like that.”

“You don’t?” She asked quickly with wide hopeful green eyes. Calla felt her heart lighten when Daniel shook his head. “Show me. Please, show me.” She cooed. “Give now that we’re alone. Give.” Not wanting to give him the chance to say ‘no’ Calla covered his lips with her own and ran her hands down back. “Please, my Lord, make love to me.” She begged breathlessly and pressed her lips to his once more and reached down between his legs. “Please?”

“No, wait.” Daniel pushed away from her. It wasn’t that he lacked a desire, a passion or a stiff dick, he had all of those and more for her. The last place he had been was, “I have to clean up first.” Now he finally knew how she felt all these years and looking into her eyes and seeing that wounded disappointment she knew how he felt for the same. Then those eyes lit up.

“Stay here, I’ll do it.” Wearing nothing more than a smile, Calla slid out the bed leaving him behind only to return with a warm rag and clean towel. “Lay down, my Lord, I will wash you.”

“Close the door.” He told her as he lay down against the pillows. Daniel didn’t really give a damn about the open door, no not tonight. The kids were gone and at this point who gave a crap if Davy walked in? No, Daniel just wanted to watch her walk away one more time and then let the anticipation rush through him as the door shut and she made her way back to him with deep eyes desiring and twinkling at him.

“Better?”

“Much.”

Calla giggled and pulled back the covers, taking her most very favorite toy in her capable hands she took the warm lathered wash cloth and circled it around and over him making sure to get every last inch and under every place she could find. Skillfully and lovingly she washed herself off of him then dried the hard tender skin in her hands. Not that she’d been dirty….you understand….but….well…it was always best to be cautious in such situations. “Shall I make love to you, my Lord?”

There was a tempting offer but, “No, I know what you want. Come down here and I’ll give it to you.”

No hesitation, Calla laid her body down for her Husband who also did not hesitate to place himself above her. “This is our bed,” she whispered, “he is only here when you invite him in.”

“When we invite him in.” Daniel corrected brushing the hair away from her face and now he noticed how much redder it was than just a few hours ago. Looked like Davy had his uses. “My beautiful, Wife, I love you.”

“Forever?”

“And always.”

“I love you.”

Alone in their room with the door closed he slid into her. Calla’s legs closed around him as did her arms. All the while he made love to her she kept her body tight against his and didn’t stop kissing him and murmuring how much she loved him.

**

“I’m going to go talk to him for a minute, ok? You must be starving by now anyway.” Daniel said with a sly grin and slid out bed only to realize David stole his robe. Making his way to the dresser to rummage in the drawer for a pair of pj bottoms, he stopped to throw another log into the fire.

“You mean you’re going to have a Gentleman’s Conversation in the hopes of quickly coming to a Gentlemen’s Agreement.” Calla said pulling the covers around body. “It’s all right, Daniel, you can say it. The two of you are going to lay down ground rules where I’m concerned.”

That was exactly what he had in mind and the sooner they got it over with the better off they’d all be. “No sense in mincing words, huh, Kitty?” On the way back across the room he stopped to kiss the top of her head. “Be right back.”

“Take your time,” she told him, “I’m going to…” Calla pointed toward the bathroom door.

“Wash up, I know. I’m not angry and I won’t be angry later I want you to know that. I love you, Calla and that was…this night has been….” he had to be honest here…. “mind-blowingly awesome. Not even Hugh Heffner ever had a sex life this good.”

“Hugh who?”

Daniel grinned wider and kissed her forehead. “Never mind about Hugh. I meant it, Cal, you are my fantasy, everything I could ever want and so much more. That doesn’t mean he’s going to come between us. You’re everything,” he kissed her hard and deep. “I won’t let him.”

“Me either.” She promised as he pulled away. “Never.” Daniel made his way out of the room and she headed toward the sink and the hot water.
