Barters N Garters Library They say love conquers all Chapter Sixteen David was sitting at the kitchen table when Daniel came down. “She all right?” David asked without looking up. “I mean, I tried my best not to….” “She’s ok.” He interjected. “I know she looks more fragile than she is…some times anyway.” “You all right?” “I’ll adjust. What about you? You all right?” A cigarette. Oh, yeah. A nice heady Marlboro Red, that’s be real good right about now. But his s cigs were upstairs in his coat which was in Danny’s bedroom. Before Daniel came down the stairs he’d helped himself to a beer from the fridge and he’d almost had it toasted and gone when his brother walked into the kitchen. “I don’t think I’m gonna be headin’ south of the border, am I Danny?” Now David did look up. “Even if I did say I wanted the money I just don’t see….I mean, if nothing else, what if she got sick again? What if you couldn’t find me? What if…I dunno….just ‘what if’?” Daniel was struck by how much David sounded like the boy he used to be instead of one-strikes-away-from-out Texas hoodlum he’d become. “About that job that doesn’t pay very much.” Daniel began. “If you’re really interested in sticking around here maybe we can work something out but before you answer that doesn’t mean I expect to find you hitting on my Wife…or cornering her…if you do that even once, Davy I swear to God…” “I’ve changed, Danny. Why can’t you see that? She does.” He looked down at his hands again, “She has to.” He muttered and then raised his eyes. “I’m not a threat to her or you, if you don’t ever believe anything else that comes outta of my mouth you can take that one to the bank.” David took a long swallow from the bottle of Molsons Golden he’d scammed from the fridge. “And as for me, ah, and her…well, not without your permission any how. I get it.” David clarified with a grin. “Maybe I’ll stick around a little bit. Don’t worry I won’t say nothing else to Nick, I know he’s your son, yours and Callie’s.” David shook his head and looked down at his hands. He was drinking Danny’s beer. Sitting in Danny’s kitchen. In Danny’s house. After having just had the time of his life with Danny’s Wife. Ain’t nothin’ mine? “Not mine.” Davy muttered under his breath. “I wish he was. I wish that this…I wish this whole thing….” “Was yours, yeah believe me, big brother, I get that. They’re not yours, they’re mine.” Daniel warned. “Listen to me, she doesn’t love you, she’ll never love you.” “Why not?” “Because she loves me.” “Didn’t seem dat way to me.” David countered easily and licked his lips which were still burning from her kisses. “Now, don’t get me wrong, Danny. I know she loves you, that is very apparent. But, she could have been mine. You saw her just now, you can’t deny it seemed like she wanted me.” “Don’t start this, it’s only because you look like me.” Daniel cautioned. “You smell like me….” “I taste like you,” David teased. “Maybe she does love me for me. Is that so bad? Oh no, not the way she loves you, baby brother, you’ll always be Number One. But just because it’s different doesn’t make it less-than or wrong. Ya know something else, Danny? I think you’re scared of the fact that she forgives me because you haven’t.” Though only God knows why she has or how she even could. Maybe David never was the shiniest penny in the barrel but he was always the sharpest knife in the drawer. In the long run, if David was going to stick around and be Sa’Tan, though that presented obstacles of its own, it would be better if she did love both of them. Somehow Daniel would find a way not be jealous of that because—well because—because—the fact that she loved two didn’t lessen her love for either one individually, in fact, it made it stronger. Yin & Yang. Yeah, that was it. There was something else, something darker and that really turned his stomach. That was the idea that Calla could forgive David for all the yeas of torment he left her with. How could she do that so easily? How could she take him in her arms, kiss him and hold him close after that? “I’m still working on forgiving you.” Daniel admitted. “Listen up because this has nothing to do with that.” Daniel warned and sat down at the table. “Simply by the virtue of what you are or might be to her, which is that non-paying job of Sa’tan, you will always be Second to me, Husband. You have no chance in hell of surpassing me in her life, her heart or her bed. If you can’t handle that you better say something now. I got your money, big brother…” “Wot dew Ilook like? A hooker? I ain’t takin’ no money for sleeping with Callie,”” David growled. Daniel rode over him. “The money is here in this house so if that’s how you feel then take it and just walk away and don’t let the door h….” “And if’n I say ‘yes’, if’n I tell you that I can handle this thing, this not coming first with her thing, then this gets to go on?” David asked now craving that Marlboro Red more than before. The look on Danny’s face was both priceless and pitiful. “Aw, man, don’t bullshit me, pull dat crap on your CO if’n yew want to but leave me outta it, a’ight?” David huffed. “You liked it. I liked it. She liked it. Hell, boy, she needs it. Did yew see her? There’s more red in her hair, the lines on face, the bags under eyes are going away and she’s go this glow.” He dropped his voice, gave a wicked little grin and said, “And she wants more.” Things were getting dicey and heavy, Daniel found he didn’t want to hammer out a Gentlemen’s Agreement with David, at least not one she wasn’t here to approve of. Still, “Yeah, chances are you’ll get to do that again.” Fine, he choked that part out but he was damned if he was going to confess to David how much he liked it. “Look, you can stick around, for now, maybe try to be part of the family. Well, the kids, that’s up to them they don’t have to treat you like ‘Uncle’ David, you know? If they don’t want to have anything to do with you….” “They know? I mean, obviously Nick knows about the old web site but dew they know about….” “Where you took her and what you did? No. Calla never told them and neither did I.” “Maybe I got a shot then, huh?” “I don’t know, Davy, it won’t be easy but I think you’re right she needs you to stay close by.” There was a familiar aroma in the air. One warm and deeply satisfying. “What are you cooking?” “What?” Cooking? Aww, shit! “I didn’t put nuttin’ on, I should git something, huh? She’s probably hungry, we worked her over purty good.” David said with a satisfied grin. Daniel returned it. “Yeah we did and she’s waiting for another round.” David took another pull off the beer. “You nail her again?” “Excuse me?” “Just now while you were up there with her, did you nail her again? I am speakin’ English here.” David huffed and took another swallow. “Don’t get self-righteous and tell me it’s none of my bid’ness.” Daniel just gave him a dirty look. “Oh, fine, soooo—rrry. Did you make sweet love to that beautiful woman upstairs while I was out the room, Dan-iel?” He said it just like he used to when they were kids the only thing missing was his hands on his hips. “OK, fine….she is my wife….yeah, I nailed her again. Happy Da-vid?” “You ever gonna let me do dat? Give me twenty minutes alone with her?” “Why?” “Privacy. Maybe I got some things I wanna say to her and I don’t want you around.” Daniel thought about that for a second. “Maybe you got a lot of…” he stopped and pulled it in a little, this very precarious situation had its perks, (hoo boy did it!), but it had its pitfalls too and if David really did love her—and there was a first for everything—then Daniel couldn’t afford to alienate him for her sake. “We’ll see how this goes and whether or not it’s something she wants. Fair enough?” “Ah-huh. Fair enough.” End Chapter Sixteen Of This story and all stories in the Barters N Garters Library are copyrighted to Lisa Beth Darling these stories
