I'm a gun for hire, I'm a saint, I'm a liar
Because there are no facts, no truth, just data to be manipulated
I can get you any result you like....what's it worth to ya?
Because there is no wrong, there is no right
And I sleep very well at night
No shame, no solution
No remorse, no retribution

just opportunity t participate in this pathetic little circus

Chapter Five

“A wife? You said Achilles could have Calla as his wife?” Daniel still couldn’t get his head around the concept. “Why? Doesn’t seem like you to be so….generous, now does it? And…and…what the hell does he even want with a wife?”

“Just because his bent is for men does not mean Achilles lacks a desire for his line to live on.”

“I told this to the Ladies of Avalon, Ares and now I’m telling you….my…wife….is…not” Daniel shook his finger in the air, “I repeat, she is not…a….cow!” He shouted through tight lips. “Her sole purpose in life is NOT breeding.”

“But it is, Jackson.” Ares countered in a dark voice. “First, why don’t you let me tell you the story of how you bred with Enya and created that darling little baby.”

The story that Ares weaved was truly remarkable. Daniel could scarcely believe it as he sat there listening, in fact it didn’t even register when Ares came to the end. He just sat there taking it in for a few moments. “Something in there that you don’t understand?” Ares asked but received no answer so he thought he’d help Jackson out and quickly clapped his hands together while calling out for his remaining attendants. “Ladies! Bring us our meal!”

That helped raise Daniel a little. “Let me get this straight,” he began dazedly. “Enya basically rapes me in my sleep, she gets pregnant with my daughter, you for some ungodly reason that I can’t fathom let her go through with the pregnancy…. And now you want to…..what…..what do you want?”

“You know what I wanted.”

“Yeah, for me to trade my wife for my daughter.” Daniel spat. “You’re sick.”

“You know me well, Jackson, that is exactly what I wanted. Now that Callestah has lost her child she cannot find out about this one. You will leave Brigid here and allow me to raise her as my own.”

“I don’t fuckin’ think so.” Daniel said swiftly. “Brigid? You named my daughter? You have no right to do that.”

Tula came into the room followed by the other women who had been awaiting only their Lord’s order to bring in the food they had been slaving over in anticipation of Daniel Jackson’s arrival. Ares wanted everything to be in good stead for their special guest. “Shall I take the child, my Lord?”

“Yes, lay her in her bed,” Ares said to his attendant then smiled at Daniel, “in my room.”

“In your what?” Daniel asked.

“Yes, this is where she sleeps, Jackson. Everything she needs is in there, go look for yourself if you don’t believe me.”

Tula picked up the sleeping pint-sized baby and began walking away Daniel followed her to Ares’ bedroom where he found a brand new crib, new bassinet, new changing table, baby clothes, diapers, cans of formula, toys and everything he could ever imagine Brigid needing in the next few months of her life. “When she isn’t in the bassinet she sleeps in my arms.” Ares called from outside the room. “Come. Eat.” Ares demanded while the other women continued to lay the banquet upon his table. Jackson didn’t move toward what he was being offered. “Does my providing for her surprise you so much? Or perhaps you don’t like the name I’ve chosen for her?” Ares asked peering past Daniel to the little baby sleeping in the cradle. “I think it suits her. Brigid was a great….”

“Warrior…I know that Ares. No doubt she was a good friend of yours.” He said snidely and walked away from the bedroom where, before this moment, he’d last seen Calla naked wrapped up in Ares’ arms. “And no, I’m not going to let you keep my daughter.” The food on the table both smelled and looked delicious. In the real world he figured six or eight hours had passed, Daniel found he was starving. The fresh roasted duck looked very good. He pulled his chair closer to the table. “I’m taking her home with me.”

Now that his guest was being more cordial Ares joined Daniel at the table and poured two large chalices of Nectar. “You better think about that, Jackson.” He took a large swallow of the lightly sweet liquid. “If you want to keep Callestah you’ll let me keep the baby.”

“Why do you even want her? Just so you can threaten me with her for all eternity? Thanks but no thanks. The last thing I or my family needs is you holding the Sword of Damocles over our heads! I won’t let you do it. I am going to tell Calla everything. I am going to bring the baby home and…”

“AND WHAT?” Ares roared. “You think she’ll open her arms to that bastard brat of yours? She’ll say ‘Oh, Daniel,’” Ares mocked in a high voice while batting his long eyelashes. “’Everything’s all right, I’ll raise the baby as my own.’” His voice dropped again. “Not fucking likely, Jackson. She just lost her Son. The last thing she wants is a constant reminder of your infidelities smacking her in the face and calling her ‘mommy’.”

“M-m-my in….My infidelities?” Daniel stammered. “Are you crazy? Oh, no wait, let me guess, you intend to tell Calla how you came out here, found me awake and fucking Enya, is that it? She won’t believe you.”

Ares sucked a rush of air over his teeth and let out a tsk-tsk-sound. “But she will believe me,” he challenged. “When she was between us, you woke, I saw your eyes, she you’re your hands move on her. Why should she not believe you were fully awake for Enya?” Ares dared. “Oh, I know, you think she’ll rush to believe you because she loves you so much. And she does, but this will only break her heart. After all you are the man who has slept with….how many other women is it now? Twenty...thirty? Believe me Jackson, one would never guess a scrawny little shit like you could bag so many hot women.” Ares smiled and ripped off a large chunk of roast with his bare hands. “Let’s not forget it’s you who has broken Callestah’s heart more times than she can count. Yes, I’m sure that your word will carry so much more weight than mine, after all I’m only her Father!”

There was a fine how-do-you-do, the kicker of course was that Ares was right. That was exactly what Daniel was afraid of, she wouldn’t believe him when he gave the lamest excuse in the world! Still it was the truth, he never intended or wanted to sleep with Enya never mind have a child with her. Didn’t the truth count for something? Maybe. Maybe not. In the end the problem with Ares’ plan was….“It’ll never work, I know you understand that!” Daniel shouted. “The next time she sees…..Brigid, Calla will smell me on her. My God, Ares! Did you see her eyes? They’re my eyes! Calla will know that baby is mine.”

“Ah, not so fast, Jackson. Do you think me stupid? That I would not have a contingency for this? Zeus has agreed to help me if you agree to allow me to raise the baby.”

“What? Help you? How? Why?” Daniel asked. “What’s in it for you? A new sex toy when she’s older? I won’t let you do that to my daughter.”

“From the tone of your voice one might think Brigid to be my granddaughter but she is not Callestah’s child. So if I do take her when the time is right, what difference does it make? You fuck my Daughter, why shouldn’t I take yours in return?”

“Because they’re not yours! They’re mine! “ Damn Davy, all those years ago he told Daniel to just say it, say ‘she’s mine’ and Daniel couldn’t do it. It felt real good to say it now more than being merely ‘good’ it was right. “I’m not going to allow you, a man who forced his own daughter into his bed, to raise my child!” Calla’s voice rang in his head; I was never afraid of him. He never once raised a hand to me and hardly ever his voice. That didn’t matter her opinion was a little shaded when it came to Ares anyway. “If you think Calla’s forgiven you for it…..”

“Of course she has.” Ares countered before Daniel could finish. “Not only that but if you’d shut up about it she’d actually forget it. She loves me.” He said with a grin. “I can do no wrong in her eyes and I never could. No matter what I did or will do, she will always forgive me in the end.”

Daniel wished he could be so confident and cocky. “She almost didn’t forgive you for wanting to take Nicholas away.” Daniel reminded him.

“But she did, didn’t she? And by the way, I still want him to come and live here with me, Nicholas needs to be schooled. He needs to learn the extent of his own power before he winds up doing something stupid and something he will later regret just because he didn’t know what he could do. You will talk her into this as well as letting me keep Brigid.”

“Oh, yes sir.” Daniel mocked. “I don’t think so, in fact, I think you’re just as insane as all of your sons!”

“Watch your tongue boy!” Ares exploded as he rose to his feet. “Keep it in your mouth when you don’t know what you’re talking about or….:”

“Or what? You’ll kill me?” It was Daniel’s turn to smile a wicked little grin. “Nah, I don’t think so. See, Calla loves me, she is completely in love with me. If you harm me or let anything happen to me, well, she’ll never forgive you for that…now will she?”

“I can make your life a living hell, Jackson, don’t ever forget that. It is only my love for Callestah which stops me from doing exactly that.”

“Yeah, that the fact that you’re still hoping she’ll breed with you one day.” Daniel returned. “They told me what you want from her,” Daniel took a step toward the God of War. “They told me that her sole purpose in life, for just walking around on planet Earth, is to give you a race of Warriors. They told me all about how Zeus forbade you Daughters and how Aphrodite went against him. They told me how all your sons went in-fucking-sane!”

“Who are they, Jackson? Nimue? Morgan Le Fey?” Ares demanded and slammed a hard fist onto the table. The food jumped, some of it spilled over and onto the floor. Daniel did more than just flinch at the force and the sound. “Covey?” The corners of his mouth turned up while a little sparkle ignited his dark eyes as he said her name and his hand reached down to grab his oversized crotch. “They detest me, they would say anything…..”

“It’s the truth.” Daniel said strongly. “You wanna know how I know that, Ares?”

“Dazzle me, Jackson.”

Daniel stood up and put the case on the table. On the other side of the table Ares also stood so he could get a better look when Daniel opened it and removed Excalibur from it. “They gave me this to protect her from you.”

At first Ares was shocked by the sight of the weapon and he instinctively snarled at the sight of Jackson with it in his hand but whatever fears were rambling around in his head soon dissipated. “It’s bigger than you are,” he cooed in an evil tone and took a long drink of Nectar. “How stupid and desperate have they become in Avalon? I bet you don’t even know how to use it.” Ares chided. “If they truly wanted to protect Callestah from me, they would have a chosen a man for the job. You will do that I’m telling you to.”

“Or what?” Daniel flashed the sword.

“Or I’ll let Achilles show you much you don’t know about swordplay.” Ares laid a heavy hand on Daniel’s shoulder and bent at the waist to look him in the eye. “He is right you know? If I allow Achilles to kill you, Callestah will come to me in her grief and I will have your Wife, your Children and my own with Callestah.”

So much he wanted to tell Ares to fuck off and that Calla would never come to him like that, not as a woman, not the way he wanted her to but he couldn’t. If Achilles were to kill him and keep Daniel’s blood off Ares’ hand, well then, Ares would be in the clear. Calla would go to him as her Father for comfort and solace. Ares would play that part to the hilt, surely it would be an Oscar worthy performance. In not too much time both Calla and Callestah would come to see Ares as a Man. With Daniel gone her inhibitions and her doubts would go with him. She’d surrender to Ares. If Daniel thought for one moment that Ares returned those affections and that he would love her as much as Daniel did then he might not find it such a distasteful thought. Daniel didn’t believe that Ares would ever love her or any other woman like that, the way a Man should love a Woman. Achilles wouldn’t. Duncan MacLeod wouldn’t.

Davy….

…Couldn’t. No matter how hard he tried.

“Tell me, Daniel, how is it you have the sword? Why did they not choose another for her?”

“I told you they gave it to me but I suppose that’s because I wouldn’t let them…choose…another.”

“Ah, but they had someone in mind?” There was a sudden lilt in his voice. “Who? Um, who is the man they thought could protect her from me?” To Ares’ surprise Daniel just stood there, sword in hand, staring at him. Whoever they picked certainly didn’t sit well with him. “Put that away, Jackson, before you hurt someone. Perhaps MacLeod will show you how to use it and in a few hundred years you can come back and challenge me again. Right now killing you is child’s play, I could snap my fingers and snuff out your life.”

“Try it, I might surprise you.” Daniel dared holding the sword out in front of his body and looking almost as if he actually knew how to use it. “If you ever come near my Wife again, if you EVER for one second, think you’re going to fuck her because she is here to breed you some Warrior Race of Olympians, I swear to all the Gods I will find a way to end your life.”

“That’s your answer, Jackson? You’re just going to be a selfish pig and keep her all to yourself? Didn’t you mother teach you to share?”

“I wouldn’t share her for them and I won’t do it for you.” Daniel warned. The roast duck did look good so Daniel decided he’d like to have some of it. Smiling coldly at Ares without taking his eyes off the God, Daniel brought the blade of the sword down swiftly cutting the bird in two. Ares flinched, not much but he did flinch, he jumped in place at the force of the blade, inside Daniel smiled wider. With one hand he picked up half the roast duck. “If keeping Calla all to myself makes me selfish then…..oink oink.” Then he gnawed on the limb in his hand. If nothing else, it was wise to appeal to Ares’ more primal senses, usually that was all Ares was working with anyway. Daniel hadn’t been fooling anyone when he told the Ladies that he once fenced in college. In fact, Daniel Jackson had been part of the fencing team and actually had several ribbons and trophies (somewhere) to show for his efforts. It was a long time ago but Daniel had the feeling, like riding a bicycle or making love, no matter how long it had been since you’d last done it you never forgot how. “I just might give Achilles a run for his money and then where would that leave you?”

Ares leaned across the table with a wide grin on his face. The little shit had something on the stick after all. But he hadn’t figured everything out, no, not by far. “And if, per chance, one day she should come to me on her own? Then what, Jackson? Because I will not turn her away.”

“She won’t.”

“Oh but she might. I’d say my chances are still easily 50/50.” Ares countered. “In the end I suppose it all depends on you, doesn’t it?” Standing toe to toe and looking Daniel in the eye had been rewarding but it was coming to a close now. “That brings us back to Brigid.” Ares’ gaze wandered across the room to the infant who was starting to stir in her crib. “I offer you a way to save face with your Wife. Not only that but to save her suffering and her sanity. What are you going to do with it, Jackson?”

“I am going to bring my daughter home tonight and I’m going to tell my Wife everything.”

“Well then, I guess my chances just rose to 75/25, didn’t they?” Ares asked with a grin. “She’ll come running to me before the next sunrise you see. I will open my arms to her and then she will be mine. Can’t you see that?”

“That’s what you want more than anything, isn’t it? Sure it is. What’s your game, why offer me any way out of this?”

“Because I love her and I do not wish to see her heartbroken.”

“Maybe you think this will drive her mad.” Lord knew that’s what he thought. “That’s what you’re trying to avoid. What good is an insane Mother to your new race?”

“No good at all.” Ares said with a knowing tone. “Put that down before you hurt someone, Jackson.” With the flat of his hand, Ares pushed the blade away. “I mean it, have MacLeod show you a few tricks and in a few decades come see me again. I’ll welcome the challenge but right now you’re just too damn weak…like always.” Feeling confident Ares sat down in his chair while Daniel continued to stand. “Who did they chose for her?”

Ares should get a kick out of this. Maybe he could actually shed some further light on the subject. “David.” Daniel laid the sword on the table in front of him and then took a seat.

“That half-witted brother of your?” Ares growled. “I suppose he does have more backbone than you.”

“Back?” Daniel blinked his eyes and shook his head. “Backbone? Is that what you call it?” by the tone in his voice and the look in his eyes….

“I saw the tapes on that Internet.” Ares countered and poured a chalice of fresh Nectar. “I watched them. He wanted her so much he pretended to be you. That’s guile.”

“That’s rape.” Daniel returned.

“Don’t underestimate him, Jackson, he is very capable but he isn’t very intelligent.”

All at once it hit him; Ares didn’t know. Calla never told him. “Does ‘The Norwich State Hospital’ ring any bells with you?” Daniel asked and it was his turn to lean forward.

Ares thought about it a long time. “No, should it?”

“It’s in Connecticut.” Daniel prodded and leaned in a little closer to look a little deeper in the eyes of the God of War. Ares just shook his handsome head the wavy hair on his face wisping back and forth in great cascades. “David took Calla there.” He pushed a little further. More head shaking.

“What are you getting at?”

“Have a drink, Ares. It’s my turn to tell a story. Maybe you won’t find David so much to your liking when I’m finished.”
