Well I never pray
But tonight I'm on my knees yeah
I need to hear some sounds that recognize the pain in me, yeah
I let the melody shine, let it cleanse my mind, I feel free now
But the airways are clean and there's nobody singing to me now

Bittersweet symphony

The Verve

Chapter Nine

Two hours later Calla woke up in a room she didn’t recognize. It was dark and the bed was hard and empty. There was a light coming through the bottom of another door and she swung her legs off the side of the bed. “Daniel?” She called out in a hoarse voice and stumbled toward the door. Laying her hand on the knob she opened it to find David sitting on the toilet, his eyes closed in desire while his mouth hung open and his hand jerked up and down on his hard shaft. Callie, he whispered unaware of her presence. “No.” She stepped away as his eyes opened. “What….”

“Callie,” his eyes shined at her and pantless and hard as a rock he stood up and began walking toward her. “Callie, c’mere gurl, I got sum’thin for ya.”

“No,” Calla disappeared from the Motel 6 and reappeared in her own living room.

There was a blazing fire in the hearth and she thought that odd since she’d left so long ago and no one had been here to tend it.

“Where have you been?”

She turned around to see Daniel sitting on the couch and he had something in his arms. “Where have you been?” She asked in return.

“Visiting your Father.” Daniel said and looked up at her with cold eyes. “Your turn. Answer me. Where have you been?”

“Out.” Calla stammered. “What have you got?”

“Sit down.” Daniel told her. Even from this distance she reeked of booze and pot. “I’ve got something we need to talk about.”

The bundle in his arms moved and then let out a cry. “Is that my Sister?” Calla asked and sat on the floor at Daniel’s feet. “Where’s Father?” If Daniel had been off with Ares it would explain why she’d been unable to get in touch with him either by telephone or telepathy.

Daniel didn’t know just where to start or how so he tripped over his own tongue. “You don’t have any Sisters, Calla. You are Ares’ only Daughter and this is my daughter, Brigid.” Daniel said and showed her the baby in his arms. Watching her face fall and her eyes well up with tears while understanding dawned he quickly went on and told the story Ares had told him. “I didn’t want Enya, I didn’t plan on sleeping with her, Calla. The woman was jealous of you and Ares,” he mumbled and the baby started to cry again. “I was asleep, you have to believe me. Please, Cal, say you believe me. I know I’ve done some really rotten things, I cheated on you. I slept with dozens of women in Bacchus’s Kingdom but I swear on everything that is good in this world that I never wanted to have sex with Enya. You know she freaked me out, just looking at her always made me uncomfortable because she looked so much like you.”

Though she was crying she said “I believe you, Daniel.”

“You do?” He was surprised and relived. This was going better than he hoped better than he could have ever wanted as a matter of fact.

“Why would you wake for her?” Calla got up and walked away from him toward the fire. “You didn’t wake for me and I begged you to.” She didn’t turn back to look at him. “I suppose you want the baby to live with us? You want me to raise her?” Suddenly she was cold. It seemed that she could stand on the surface of the sun and still drip icicles from her body. Calla stroked her empty stomach.

“Do you think you can do that, Cal? Do you think you can be her mother?” The weight of her statement did not escape him. Ares told Daniel that his eyes had opened when Calla was pinned between the two of them and he did remember her whispering, no whimpering in his ear. Then he remembered. Her arms were around his neck, her tears dripping down his shoulders. I love you. Please help me, Sa’tan. Please wake up. He really didn’t have any right to ask her to do this. No right to wield Excalibur. No right to call her his own. “Calla, I love you. If I could change this I would, you know that, don’t you?”

“Oh please,” she huffed. “You think I got what I deserved. I laid in my Father’s bed and he doled out what I had coming to me. Isn’t that what you believe? Way deep down inside I mean. You make a good show of defending my honor, I suppose I should thank you for that.”

“Stop it.” Daniel warned. “You know I never thought you deserved what Ares did. I should have thanked you a long time ago. I just didn’t know how.” His voice cracked. “That’s not true, I felt guilty. I still do. You …you…endured so much for me. Here I am asking you to do more. She’s just a little baby, Cal.” Daniel held Brigid out so that Calla could get a clear look at her. “She’s innocent, how she came to be isn’t her fault. We don’t have to tell her about her mother. I know how this looks, how you must feel, but I swear, I’m not asking you to forget about our son. I’m not asking you to trade him for her. Nothing will ever replace him and if you really want , if you really can’t find it in your heart, then I will send her away.” Again his voice cracked deeper this time.

“You’ll hate me forever.” Calla didn’t look at the baby. Enya had joined her and Ares in the bed for a while. Ares forced Calla to take the woman and make her cum, to lick her and make love to her while Ares fucked Calla from behind and that was just the start. After a while Ares grew tired of the two women and wanted to have her to himself again, Calla remembered Ares tossing Enya out of the bedroom. She wasn’t happy in the slightest. Enya always knew that she was nothing but a stand in for her Lords’ Daughter

and that probably pissed her off more than anything else. She took her anger and her frustration out on Daniel. It was all so rational and all so sane. So pat. So easy. “Of course the baby will stay with us. Nicholas and Annie will move out next week, Colleen and Lilly will move to the basement so Brigid can have Lilly’s old nursery. See, it all works out just fine.” There were only a few hours left to the night, Calla thought she’d use them before they were gone. “Colleen and Lilly will be back in the morning, you put the baby her crib until then. Good night, Daniel.” She began walking up the stairs.

No kiss, No ‘I love you’. No, ‘come up soon’. Certainly no glance at the baby girl in his arms. He couldn’t expect more than that, not realistically, could he? No, probably not.

“Were you with David tonight?” Daniel called out as she reached the landing and just before she was out of sight. “Did you sleep with him?”

Technically speaking….”Yes, I was and I did.” With those words she disappeared from his view altogether.

Less than fifteen minutes and Daniel couldn’t take it any more no matter how furious he was with her. He trotted up the steps laid Brigid down in Lilly’s crib and then opened the door to his bedroom to find Calla in the middle of their bed. Daniel kicked the bed frame with such force that she jolted to a sitting position. “You fuck him?”

Technically speaking….”No.”

“Do anything else for him?”

“No.”

“Let him do anything for you?”

“No!”

“You said you slept with him….just now…downstairs….”

“I did….I slept with him Daniel. That’s all.”

“As in….what? As in…sleep? Just sleep?”

“Yes. We had a few drinks, he bought some Jim Beam and some pot with the money you gave him. By the way, how much more does he want?”

“Never mind about that”

“Oh, c’mon, Daniel, humor me, I want to know what I’m worth to you.”

Bitch. “A quarter of a million.”

“Dollars?” She asked in shock. “Are you mad? You could buy yourself several women for that.”

“Too bad then that I only want this one, huh? Why’d you go there, Cal, what were you looking for?”

“Answers.”

“Did you find them?”

“Yes.”

“But you didn’t fuck him or anything else?”

“No.”

“I can’t believe you were dumb enough to go there!”

“I brought your gun with me,” she returned. “It’s in my…” Oh shit.

Daniel turned around to look at her. “Where is it, Cal?”

Oh fuck! “I left it there,” she mumbled. “I forgot it when I left.” When she first woke up she saw it on the nightstand but then she’d been so shocked by the sight of him pounding his meat when she opened the door that she just got out of there.

“You left him with a loaded gun? That’s real intelligent, Kitty, way to go.” Daniel groused. David was walking around armed well that was not a good idea. He’d have to go to the Motel 6 tomorrow and see what he could do about getting it back. Davy would either hand it over or shoot him with it. “You got drunk with him. You passed out, is that it?” Daniel sat down on the edge of the bed and took off his shoes.

“Yes. Yes. Yes!”

“Then you wouldn’t know if he fucked you or not, would you?” He roared.

“Well, when I woke, my clothing was mostly in place, my pussy wasn’t wet or sticky

AND I found him jerking off in the bathroom. If he had fucked me—as you so eloquently put it—I don’t think he would have found it necessary to take it in the hand afterwards….do you?” She let out a little titter. “Silly me, you’re the wrong person to ask, aren’t you? I mean, obviously you never found me to be truly satisfying. Perhaps David feels the same way.”

That tone in her voice was like nails on a chalk board. “Shut up, Calla.” Daniel warned. Images of a snowy night and rustic cabin started running through Daniel’s mind. He’d never quite forgiven himself for that night though she, of course, never once mentioned it. If she wanted a Sa’tan, someone who would keep her tight ass in line….. “Don’t tempt me. I know you’re angry about Brigid and…and…you have every right to be. I’m angry about it too on a lot of levels but she is my daughter and I want to be her father. I have every right to be her father….”

“I’ve already agreed to this.” She said cutting him off and then rolling over on her side away from him as he dropped his pants.

“You don’t have any right to sleep with my brother!” Daniel finished with contempt in his voice. “Where’s Nicholas? Does he know where you went tonight?”

“I don’t need a babysitter.”

“You need something.”

“Good night, Daniel.”

“Yeah, right, good night, Cal.” Daniel turned out the light and left the bedroom. He couldn’t sleep next to her tonight not with her being so fresh from David’s bed. In the guest bedroom he tossed and turned, punched the pillows, tossed and turned some more. She wanted someone who’d teach her a lesson now and then….fine. He could do that.
