Barters N Garters Library Prologue She can kill with a smile Sun Rise The first rays of light were beginning to creep across the horizon when Calla rolled over, embraced the man at her side and opened her eyes. “I love you,” she murmured and pulled her body closer to him snuggling against his warmth and dancing her finger tips across his bare chest. “I love you so much,” she sighed and kissed the space over his heart. The absolute last thing he wanted to do was to ruin the moment. The woman in his arms so was so warm, soft and sweet and she hadn’t looked up at him yet, but….. “I love yew too, Callie.” Calla pushed away from him with a start. “No, what are you….. Daniel!” “It’s a’ight, Callie.” David said reaching out for her but she kept scooting away her eyes alight with fear. “Shhh, its ok, gurl.” “Daniel!” The bathroom door flung open and Daniel Jackson ran out with his mouth still ringed in toothpaste. “What the hell?” “Daniel! Daniel!” Calla flung her arms around him. “What did you do?” He accused of his brother. “Nuttin’! She jus’ woke up, dat’s all, she’s confused.” In his arms she was shaking and on the verge of tears. “I’m sorry I’m sorry I’m sorry I’m sorry,” “Stop it,” he said easily. At first Daniel held her tighter and then, when she wouldn’t stop apologizing, he pushed her away so he could look at her. Still in the bed behind her David frowned deeply and got up. “Don’t you remember last night?” Daniel asked as he kissed the side of her head. “The three of us?” “Three? No, I’m sorry; I didn’t mean to, I’m sorry.” “Stop,” he said again but with more force than before. “You don’t have to be sorry. Davy where are you going?” He asked quickly watching his brother jump in his faded blue jeans. “Make some coffee.” David walked out of the room and he too was on the verge of tears at her rejection of him. “Stay here.” Daniel told her and rushed into the bathroom to finish and rinse out his mouth when he came back to the bedroom she was sitting on the edge of the bed with the blankets pulled all the way around her. There was one very bright spot and that was Daniel could not see a single gray hair in her lovely auburn head. The fire there was no longer dying and Davy was right she was just a little confused. “Everything’s ok.” Daniel said sitting down next to her and putting an arm around her shoulder. “I love you, that hasn’t changed.” “It wasn’t a dream?” The sore and sticky area between her legs attested to the fact that…. “No, it wasn’t. It really happened.” “I don’t know what to do.” “About what?” “Everything.” “Do you remember where we’re going in just a little bit?” He asked cautiously. “All of us, you, me and David?” “Class, I have to go to Class in a few hours.” Calla looked to the window to see that it was still dark and then to the clock which read 5:32 then she glanced back at her Husband’s face. Clearly, Class was not what he had in mind. “It’s so very early, why do we have to go anywhere?” “Think Kitty.” Daniel encouraged. This seemed proof enough that while she looked a thousand times better than she had yesterday and the day before, Calla’ mind hadn’t caught up to her body just yet. If all of her thousands of Brothers—as well as her ever-loving Father—had gone insane, perhaps nothing would prevent her from suffering that same Fate; not even the Brothers Jackson and their love for her. If she hadn’t dreamed the outrageously awesome sex with two Daniels—obviously she hadn’t since she woke in David’s arms this morning--then….. “Father? He was here, he was angry.” “That’s right.” Daniel smiled. “We’re going to the Island today.” “You’re going to the Underworld.” Calla grabbed his hands. “Please don’t go. Stay with me. Don’t do this for him. My Lord, please, don’t do this.” “I’m not doing it for him; I’m doing it for us.” Daniel wanted to be relieved that it appeared it was all coming back to her but he wasn’t. “We have to do this. We’re going to stop and get Nicholas, he’s going to go with us and he’s going to stay with you in your Father’s home while David and I are gone. We won’t be long.” Calla shook her head and frowned deeply. “Stay with me.” “I have to talk to him. Why don’t you jump in the shower before we go and get Nicholas?” “There is nothing I can say or do to change your mind?” “No.” Wishing for a cigarette but remembering they were in his coat which was upstairs. David Jackson, naked as the day he was born looked up at the sound of foot steps. “Wot do yew want, Danny?” “Don’t hold it against her, all right; she was just startled that’s all.” “Yeah, I git it.” David tapped the side of his head harshly. “I ain’t a total i’jit.” “Do you?” Daniel asked and sat at the table. “Do you know that she used to wake up like that all the time? Several times a night and that some nights she was so afraid of your face behind her eyes that she didn’t sleep at all? Do you know about this stuff, Davy?” “Shut up.” “No, see ‘cause I do know and you should listen, you should know……” “I don’t need ta have this li’l pow-wow, Danny.” Indeed he did not. From his vantage point in Tartarus David had seen many things, well, he’d been forced to confront many things. One of which were the women he’d violated. Most of them woke up screaming in the middle of the night and they were the lucky ones because at least to sleep for some small period of time. The others never made it that far back to the world they knew before he barged in and turned everything to shit for them. Before he died, David Jackson never once gave anything as trivial as After Effects a first thought let a lone a second one. Now he was the one who woke up in the middle of the night sometimes with their twisted screaming faces behind his eyes. “Do you have any idea how long it took her to stop seeing you when she looked at me?” That was a fact which was compounded by Eros kidnapping then brainwashing him into believing that he was David. Daniel and Calla spent almost the first full year of their married life trying to work out all of the complexities and nuances of the situation and it wasn’t easy. “Dat why you started fuckin’ that brunette bitch? Ya know the one who turned out to be Eros’ wife?” David retorted. “Huh? Callie wasn’t givin’ it up ta her new Husband?” Daniel glared at his brother the same way David had been glaring at him. “No, that wasn’t the problem.” “Wot was it then? Oh, wait, now, mabbe she jus wasn’t good enough at it for you? Ya know, I done told her you did it ‘cause she strapped your skinny ass to that bed for a week. Fer gods’ sake, don’t sit there and tell me you actually wanted that bitch, if’n you do then I’ll have to kick your butt just on principal alone.” “Look, if I knew who Rowan was I never would have touched her. Calla and I have been over this, it’s not your concern so drop it.” “Ooooo, hit a sore spot, did I?” But David already knew that, Callie was more upset about and hurt by Rowan—even she hadn’t turned out to be Psyche—than she was about all of them women Danny fucked flat in Bacchus’ world. If she weren’t then she wouldn’t have asked him about her less than a week ago. “C’mon Danny-boy, its jus’ us brothers here, fess up, why’d ya do it? If you love her so much how come you’re always fuckin’ around on her?” “I am not always fucking around on her! It happened twice.” David laughed hard. “You mean… well…wot dew you mean, Danny? I know you put it to that Rowan bitch a lot more than twice and neither of us can so high as to give a number to the times you did it with all those other ones.” “It’s over! It was years ago! It doesn’t matter anymore.” Daniel spat. “No? Den how come she was askin’ me ‘bout all a’ this jus’ last week? I mean, if’n it’s so far behind yew and n’ all…if’n it doesn’t still weigh on her mind, den why wudd she dew that, Danny Why wudd she ask me?” “You think you can use this to come between Calla and me? Is that it? I won’t let you do it!” From behind them came a small muffled voice. “Please don’t argue.” Calla said biting down on her bottom lip and walking into the kitchen. A yellow bath towel wrapped around her body and her hair was soaking wet it made a little puddle on the kitchen floor as she stood there shaking, steam rising from her alabaster skin. While in the shower she’d felt their anger and it compounded her own confusion and then her guilt at last night and then, even worse, at turning David away so cruelly this morning. “I’m sorry. I get….I get…..” Calla tapped the side of her head and then shook it again. “Confused sometimes, I know.” David agreed finishing her thought. “I’m flighty…drifty,” she forced a smile. “Forgive me, Sa’Tan David? I mean no harm.” How could he be angry with her? He couldn’t not when she was standing there like that all wet and warm, just the way he liked her best. “It’s ok, Sunshine. Things have been, well, they been real fucked up lately.” David made no move to get up and embrace her in fact he just looked down at his hands rather than at her. “Don’t worry about it, gurl. It ain’t nuttin’.” Calla didn’t know what to do, what was right or proper or expected, no one taught her the rules for this part of the game maybe that was because no one ever thought she’d get this far in life. She swung a naked and cooling leg over the bench and sat down next to Daniel who took her hand in his and wrapped an arm around her shoulder pulling her in tight to his warmth and getting the sleeve of his robe damp in the process. “I didn’t mean to turn you away or make you feel bad.” She whispered. “I’m very sorry. I’m glad for last night, I feel much better today. Thank you.” Thank you! Well if that didn’t beat all! Yeah, last night had been so hard on me! Hoo-boy! Such difficult and disgusting work, I jus’ don’t know if’n I’ll ever find it in me to do that again! From the deep sincerity in her eyes David would have to say that those sarcastic thoughts never crossed her mind. “Anytime Sunshine.” “We are a family,” Calla reached across the table and David gave her his hand. Next to she took Daniel’s in her free one. “I know, perhaps, our family isn’t all that much compared to others and we are battered and a bit broken. I know we have obstacles but we are still here, we are still good” she squeezed their hands. “You are brothers, you missed so many years, please you shouldn’t fight and certainly not about or over me.” Sometimes she made absolutely no sense whatsoever and others she seemed the smartest person in the world. This was one of the latter. David nodded. There was work ahead best be getting’ to it. “Why don’t you go ‘n finish yer shower, Sunshine. Danny ‘n me’ll bring the coffee up to yew in a minute.” Calla gave him a hopeful little grin and turned to Daniel. “Go on, honey, everything’s ok here.” Kissing her Husband sweetly she got up and then left the room off on her way to finish showering. “Family is very important to her.” Daniel said to his brother when she was out of ear shot. “So I see.” David agreed. “Wot about yew? Family important? I mean, the lack of it is something we have in common. So what’chew think? Aft’a all these years, huh, Danny? Yew think it’s bett’a ta have a family or do yew think it’s bett’a not ta be tied down?” Over the course of his considerably youthful life Daniel Jackson acquired the luxury of having it both ways. He had a warm, loving and for a long time stable, family of his own but he went gallivanting throughout the universe whenever the need or just the plain old desire hit him. “It means everything.” Daniel told him. “One day you’ll find out.” David laughed hysterically. “Yeah, dat’s funny, Danny.” He slapped his bare knee. “How’m I supposed ta do dat? Yew know she’s got my heart.” “Look, Davy, even Lancelot had a wife and a family.” David snickered and his blue eyes twinkled. “You really dew think I’m stupid, don’cha?” He leaned forward as though he was about to reveal a long-held secret. “The Lady of Shallot, Lance’s wife, the mother of Sir Galahad, she kill’t herself, Danny. I’d think a man like yew wudd know dat.” And so, of course, Daniel did already know that. “Poor metaphor.” He stumbled and was, for a moment, forced to remember they grew up in the same house and they heard the same stories. Just because by some miracle of the Gods, Daniel caught a huge break—one that David had not, possibly until right now—didn’t mean that David was an idiot. “So maybe you can be part of this family. All I’m trying to say is that there’s nothing to say that you can’t have one of your own….with another woman, some day. Calla, if what you said is true—“ David couldn’t resist, “Wot?” He taunted, “Wot’d I say? Dat she might…..l—l—ove me?” “You’re just trying to goad me, that’s all.” Daniel returned. “Is it workin’?” David teased. Daniel ignored him and finished his train of thought. “If it’s true then she’ll want that for you.” “I dunno ‘bout none of that but I know this,” David said briskly. “One day, Callie’s gonna wake up in my arms and smile. Wot are yew gonna do on dat day, Danny?” He pointed his index finger at the table and poked at it harshly; up and down up and down, tap, tap, tap. “I know she is. One day.” It was just as likely as not…..one day….down the road. “We’ll see about that when we get there.” Daniel cleared his throat. “In the meantime, you ready for today? Are you sure you know where the younger one is?” “Positive, we’ll run in grab her and run out….piece o’ cake.” Still naked and definitely not in bad shape, David got up and went to the cabinet where he fished out three mugs and began filling them with fresh coffee. “But…ah, now, are you really sure about this whole thing, Danny? I mean it all sounds a bit far-fetched ta me, ya know?” Daniel grunted. Yes it all sounded far-fetched and crazy, impossible even but if he’d learned one thing it was that Calla’s Family was known for pulling off the impossible and the insanely far-fetched. “What’s your problem?” “It don’t all sound jus’ a bit, I dunno, Danny…..seedy….ta you? I mean you are supposed ta be the one wit the morals and the conscience and all.” David reminded his younger brother. “Oh, how does she like her coffee, Danny?” Yeah it was more than just a bit seedy and distasteful but he kept reminding himself that there were other aspects to this as well. It was those aspects Daniel concentrated on. “Light and sweet but just make half a cup for her, she’s supposed to drink this crap in the morning.” Daniel pulled a canister of powered shake mix from the opposite cabinet where the mugs were stored. “This is always fun trying to get her to drink this stuff.” “Light n sweet,” David chuckled. “I shoudda known dat.” He dumped two and half teaspoons of sugar into the mug. “Wot is it? I mean, she’s looking good today, maybe she don’t need it.” Calla was looking very good today, her eyes were clear and bright, and her hair returned to its lustrous auburn there was not a strand of gray to be seen! Her skin pink and glowing, she was up and moving under own power. Daniel wished he could take her in to see Adams and let the man run a full battery of those tests he liked so much just to be sure the Xerinium was gone but there wasn’t time for that. Uncapping the blender he dumped three scoops of the off-white vanilla powder into it followed by a cup of whole milk. “Adams said she had to drink it the last time I took her in. This stuff is supposed to……” David was staring at the container. “Hoo, don’t let her see that.” He pointed to the nutrition chart on the back and the words ‘one serving contains 3500 calories’. “Yeah, I know. Body builders use this crap to bulk up; it’s supposed to put weight on her.” “Why don’t we just work her up a good appetite?” David smiled a bit. “Fer Christ sakes, Danny that stuff stinks.” “Hence the reason she never wants to drink it.” Daniel agreed pushing the button the blender whirred to life whipping the ingredients into a frothy health food shake. “It says ‘Vanilla flavored’ but…” “Vanilla flavored wot?” David took another sniff. “Ick, I don’t think so. I’ve known piles of manure dat smelt better than that.” End Of Prologue This story and all stories in the Barters N Garters Library are copyrighted to Lisa Beth Darling these stories
