Barters N Garters Library Chapter One Here comes the woman Colleen woke up in what would one day be the second bedroom in Nicholas’ house. Last night had been, well, it had been. Let’s start there. Some where around six-thirty last night Nick came bursting out of Mom’s hospital room screaming about how she was gone and how Dad and Uncle David took her away. How they couldn’t go home last night. At first she thought he was tripping or something. Mom, Dad and…..Uncle David? Oh puh-lease, the thought was just ridiculous. About a half an hour after that comforting thought, the three of them were sitting on the floor of the living room in the new house with its bare walls and floors, she began to feel warm. Well, she was sitting near the fire. Perhaps it was warmer than she thought. She and Nick managed to get the things from the house that they would need for the night such as the crib, bassinet, extra baby supplies, Nick & Annie’s bed and Colleen’s as well. Sacking out on the floor in front of the fire for the night was all well and good but it was another not to have any blankets or pillows. They also managed to liberate a bit of food from the kitchen of their parents’ house while sitting in the new house. Lily cried for her dinner and a changing and so did Brigid. Annie took care of the smaller while Colleen tended her own daughter. One day Annie was going to make an excellent mother. She wished she could say the same for Nick who was brooding by the window gazing out at the darkening streets and the stars in the sky. Colleen tried to talk to him as did Annie and all he did was grunt and shrug them off. She did catch him staring at her out of the corner of his dark eyes as she fed Lily or perhaps it was her breast her Brother was staring at, she really couldn’t be sure. When the babies were done Annie, who felt the tension in the room and in need it was so oppressive it felt as though it filled the entire State of Colorado, took them and laid them down for the night giving the twins a chance to talk. “You know what they’re doing, don’t you?” Colleen asked her big brother and tried to put a hand on his shoulder but Nick slapped it away from his body. “Don’t be like that. Nicky,” she grunted, “this sucks, ok? I know.” “What do you know? That our Mother’s a whore and she’ll fuck anything?” He huffed. “Stop that! It’s not like she’s cheating on Dad….he’s right there!” “That just makes it worse. Sick. Perverted. I never thought Dad would go for anything like that.” The ever persistent one, Colleen tried to hardest to talk some sense into her hard-headed brother with little success. “What? How can you say that? Mom’s sick and if this will…..” “Will what, Cole?” He snapped harshly. “What difference does it make why they’re doing it?” Yes, he knew what they were up to all right. Just like his Sister Nicholas felt it when things began to get hot and heavy but unlike his Sister, Nicholas who had been warned by good old Uncle David, started actively seeking out the events transpiring in Daniel and Calla’s bedroom before they even got back to the new house. Nicholas, unlike his Sister, had been watching said events unfold in glorious living color. Nicholas, whether out of shock or concern he didn’t know, had been kind enough to warn Colleen about what was going to happen and Colleen had been polite enough to at least make the attempt to turn it off or to look away from what was happening once she realized it. While she couldn’t say that she approved of what was happening, and how could she? Calla had always stressed that such activities were wrong and should not be indulged. Now Coley saw that it wasn’t that her Mother believed that, Calla was doing her best to convince Calla of what she was saying so that she continue to deny an entire half of her being. To Coley it was obvious that if she hadn’t been shot or gotten poisoned by the Xerinium then Calla, draining and weakening little by little day by day, would be perfectly happy to go on denying that part until the day she died. She did get shot and she did get sick and now Dad wasn’t the only man in their bed. That wasn’t necessarily what she or Nick were struggling with, it was the fact that all three Jackson’s were piled into the marital bed of Daniel and Calla—the very same bed where as children they would pile in with their parents on Saturday or Sunday mornings or perhaps if they were ill—and they were liking it very much. Dad and Uncle David were being so good to Mom that if colleen didn’t see it, however briefly, she never would have believed it. Nicky just had to see that. He had to. “She’s a fucking whore!” Nicholas broke up the branches, twigs and even a few of the logs between his hands and threw them into the fire without looking at Colleen. “Nicholas!” Colleen gasped. “Don’t say that about Mom, she loves us. She’s done everything for us.” “Like what? Like keeping secrets?” He asked. Snap. A pair of twigs broke in his hands and he threw them into the hearth. “Like about Uncle David and what he really did to her? Do you know about it?” A branch, an inch around…Snap. Into the flames. “Or about dat black guy she use’ta paint? Kanan, yew know ‘bout that?” Standing up and still staring into the fire, Nick grabbed a small log and broke it over his knees. Into the fire it went. “You know how she left us when we was kids ta go wit him?” Each word became a little terser and his lips a little tighter, his finely squared jaw set a set itself a little harder. Now he looked over at her to see that Colleen didn’t know that the time they thought Mom was dead for several months, she’d actually gone off with that black bastard stud of hers. Dad took her back!? “No, she didn’t….” Colleen got up from the floor and walked closer to her Brother. “Yes, she did. Umpa told me, him and Zeus, they told me lots’a stuff.” His eye brow rose and Nicholas let out a sad grin. “She ain’t who we think she is she never was.” Back in Umpa’s cave a few days ago, Nicholas defended her, he stood up for her and told Ares to go fuck himself that he wouldn’t be part of this lousy plan. He meant it, goddamnit! He fucking meant it! Tonight, there she was, doing all the things Umpa said she did for those other men. She wasn’t the sweet little Momma they thought she was. No, she was something much darker than that and she’d been fooling them all their lives. Secrets, they’re a terrible thing. “Hartley, that fucking jackass, she let him come between them, she let him into our house! She is fucking the man who raped her, right now, as we sit here chit chatting he’s all up in her little cunt…” “It’s not true! None of it!” Colleen slapped him across the face. “Shut up! Shut your lying filthy mouth!” Nick rocked back on his heels and rubbed the sore area at the corner of his mouth. His hand came away with blood. “Don’t do that again.” He warned. “Or what?” She huffed in return. “Don’t push me, Cole. She’s a fucking slut.” “That fucking slut loves you—she gave you your pathetic little life! This house!” Colleen dropped her voice a bit “Your education and your wife’s!” She grunted. “Maybe you should remember that.” “She left m—us!” Nicholas roared and kicked the small pile of wood on the floor into the hearth. “Do you get that?” “I’m telling you that’s not true! Nicky, she wouldn’t just wal..” “Twice that fucking slut ran off with one of her goddamn boyfriends….” “Stop saying that! She’d never do anything like that!” “Oh fuckin’ puh-lease! What’samatta? You forgot about Hartley already? Kanan, Hartley, wot difference does it make? Now she’s got David, how much longer do you think it’ll be before she skips town with him? Before she leaves us in the dust….again. You should be pissed off at her but instead you’re standing there trying to defend her but there ain’t no defense for ‘er! None! Umpa was right ta do what he did ta ‘er….” “What? Take that back!” Colleen slapped him again but harder, this time he didn’t just rock back on his heels from the blow Nicholas fell on his ass. “I can’t believe you’d think that never mind say it! Umpa’s a pig!” She shouted. “I hate him and I hope Dad and Uncle David fry his ass for what he did to Mom. You should too. He’s a goddamn liar he’s filled your head with all of this bullshit! Kanan was a horrible man! He did awful things to Mom and you knew that already, I know you did. You’ve known it since you were a little boy, we both have; don’t you remember her dreams? For Christ sake! What did Umpa say to you to spin you up like this? You know you can’t believe him, Nicky, he’s always had it in for Mom and Dad.” Quietly as could be, very still and very calmly--which turned out to be very menacing—Nicholas loomed over his Sister. “Uncle David,” he said in a very controlled voice, yes, very controlled even through the sing-song cadence and the obvious disdain, Nicholas spoke very deliberately while tossing his dark wavy locks from side to side. “Raped her, hard, long and brutally. Any woman that would take her rapist into her bed deserves whatever she gets.” Nick took one large step in her direction then pushed his Sister with both hands. “Dad’s even worse because he’s letting it happen. They’re all sick and so are you if you agree with this shit.” “She’s your Mother! She loves you, her precious little baby boy, more than anyone ‘cept Dad---“ “That ain’t tr—“ “Yes it is! And she’s sick…what if…what if …it was cancer or something. What if she needed chemotherapy to make her better….” “Christ Cole! Mom ain’t never gonna get cancer you numb-nuts.” “WHAT IF she did?! Would you tell her she couldn’t do it—she couldn’t have chemo because her hair would fall out and that would make you uncomfortable? You’d find her disgusting if she was bald? Would you?” “That’s different it ain’t the same at all.” Nick just huffed and rolled his eyes and tried to brush past her. “Yes, it is, it’s exactly the same.” Colleen tried to grab for him as he walked past her. “Nicky!?” “Ya know something?” He shot turning swiftly on his heels to face her. “I always said you were a whore, apple doesn’t fall from the tree,” he snorted. “The only reason you’re in favor of this is because you’re getting off on it just like she is. I know you are or, excuse me, you will be. Uncle David and Dad, is that where you wanna be, Cole? Squeezed between your Uncle and your Father?” No! She didn’t want anything like that! In fact, she hadn’t even thought about what she was feeling in quite that vivid way until Nick said it. Caught off guard she said the first thing that came to her mind, in the end, it may have cut a little too close to the bone. “Me? Ha! I ain’t the one with bulging tent in my pants…you are! You want Mom like that or all to yourself, it doesn’t matter, does it? No, it don’t make a lick of difference if you get her all to yourself or if she’s between her Father and her Son, does it?” She shot back. “That’s how you wanna get off…not me!” Not knowing what else to do and never having really been terribly afraid of her Brother before, Colleen tried to slap him one more time just to knock some sense into him because she could not believe the things that he was saying. Her hand pulled back, she swung forward and he caught it before she could connect. “You don’t wanna be doin’ that, little Sister. I said, don’t strike me again, didn’t I?” Nicholas hawked out a large wad of spit into her face. “You’re sick, get help.” He demanded shoving her hard to the ground, so hard that the entire house shook when her ass met the hardwood floor. That was the last insult she could take for the night, Coley felt tears sting her eyes as she swiped his spit away from her eyes. “You can’t believe him!” “Stay the fuck away from me.” Nicholas sneered and went off in search of his wife and a good deal of relief.
