Barters N Garters Library Chapter Eight You better stay away from him, Originally David Jackson did exactly what he said he was going to which was to take the little girl back up the chute and wait for his brother. But when he emerged from the well—to almost pitch dark as the torches which had once burned outside the cabin were now extinguished—with the girl holding tightly to him the thing which hovered in the air around them down there now did the same up here and David had no doubt that who/whatever it was, it could see them. Bummer was he couldn’t see it. C’mon, Danny, jus’ whup him and git up here. All around him was the flapping of wings, the noise and wind they made was almost enough to make him want to scream as he held on to the little girl whom Danny had entrusted to his care. If staying here meant she was in danger then Danny would want him to go. “Hold on to me, kiddo.” The wind was getting stronger and the flapping of those oversized wings louder. David swore if he reached up in the darkness he’d be able to touch the once fabled God of Love. “But Danny….you said you’d wait here for Danny!” “Shhh, quiet!” David hissed glancing at the still dark cabin behind them. “No sense in bothering them,” he tossed his head toward it. “I know, wot I said pun’kin’ but we gots ta go. Danny’ll catch up to us, we won’t leave wit’out him, I promise.” The little girl’s little arms wrapped around his neck as her face buried in his shoulder so she didn’t have to look at the thing flying over head. Then again, she had no need to look up to know that it was her very own Brother stalking them. The black man, Kanan had been after her since her Mother went away and when Eros returned he had changed somehow and was no longer the kind Brother she’d once known, not that he had always been such to begin with. There were times, even before Mother went away, that he had been down right mean and nasty to her. All of a sudden the darkness peeled away and the false sun shone bright and hot upon the trail to the Cross Roads. The change was so abrupt that David had to raise a hand to shield his eyes from the harsh glare. He couldn’t stop long they were sitting ducks out here on the path where the trees were fewer and sparser. A dark shadow passed overhead and David got his first good look at the thing which had been trailing them through the dark forest. Danny was right, it was Eros. A man with a golden set of wings glided not fifty feet above them. He had bronze skin and gold eyes. “He wants to hurt me.” The little girl whispered in his ear. “Though I don’t understand why.” Cause he’s a sick perverted ol’ bastard and just as in-fucking-sane as your Pappy. David thought but refrained from uttering. David ran a few more paces before the ground turned not sticky but muddied. His foot landed in the goo and was instantly sucked in but he didn’t realize that little fact in time and before his momentum broke he took another stride. Both feet firmly stuck in the deep brown glue of the ground and the girl he was carrying flew out of his arms with the harsh force of the sudden stop. Before she could hit the ground with teeth gnashing force, Eros swooped down and caught her in mid-air. Fuck! “Let ‘er go!” David shouted as he fought to pull his feet free of the gunk, which he realized not only stuck him to where he stood but was beginning to pull him down. ** David was right about the chute; all Daniel had to do was stand under and….woosh! Up he went, banking left and zig-zagging right, backwards the whole way. It was a hell of a ride! Any kid would love it. Emerging, dry as a bone, through the top of the well he stepped onto the ground. Looking around he noticed something else; he was alone. Neither David nor little Callestah were anywhere in sight. Where had they gone? Davy promised to wait here for him and he seemed damn serious about it. “Don’t fuck me over,” Daniel mumbled under his breath as the worst of thoughts began to tickle his mind. No, Davy wouldn’t leave him here because as tempting a thought as it might to the man that was no way to get Calla all to himself. Nope, it certainly was not, she’d have a fit if David came back alone. The altercation with Hartley got his blood going and now Daniel was thirsty. Just a little breather would be good, surely David and the little girl were here somewhere and he would find them shortly. Resting up against the well facing the rundown log cabin, Daniel took the canteen from around his neck and uncapped it. The water inside was much cooler than it had been as it went down his parched throat. Another swallow and he started to recap the canteen that was when Daniel noticed the blood on his hands. Was that Hartley’s blood? Did dead people bleed? He didn’t know but his knuckles hurt almost as though he’d been punching the hard unforgiving surface of a wall instead the soft ‘flesh’ of Andrew F. Hartley’s pretty mug. Sitting there taking a small rest Daniel realized he was starving, in fact, he felt like he hadn’t eaten in days. Padding his pockets he hit upon the 5th Avenue candy bar. “Big, big kiss…huge…massive kiss for you, Kitty just as soon as I get home.” Daniel tore into the candy bar and didn’t even taste it as it went down. Still out of breath and with his stomach grumbling more than before because only now was he beginning to realize just how hungry he was Daniel took another drink from the almost empty canteen. Just as he began swiping the water and grime away from his lower lip a light came on inside the cabin, he squirreled his way around to the other side of the well just as the door opened. Some….some…..some thing walked out onto the strongly bowed porch. It walked on two legs and almost had the body of a man except that it was covered in hair from the bottom of its too big feet to the top of its head which was not human but rather was that of a dog or a….. “Werewolf,” Daniel muttered softly in shock and surprise. “Holy crap. You have got to be kidding me.” Looking at the thing it was no wonder David didn’t want to bother the locals when they came through. The creature’s ears pricked up as though it heard him. Suddenly, Daniel began to wonder if he was up or down hill from it. Quietly he tucked himself further behind the well while still keeping an eye on it. The half-man half-wolf stuck its snout up in the air and took several short whiffs followed by one long one before turning its attention in the direction of the well. He smells me Daniel looked down at the wrapper in his hand, and the chocolate. I am fresh out dude. Shit. Knowing he was not carrying a gun, a knife or a weapon or any kind Daniel frantically began to pat himself down looking for anything he could use as a weapon. Calla had anticipated every obstacle so far, he had to have something. Pocket to pocket the palms of his hands went as the panic started to rise in him. The only thing louder than the beating of his heart pounding in his ears was the snorting of the approaching beast. I am not going to die here. I’m not. I’m….. First aid spray. Zippo lighter. Told ya, I’m not gonna die here. Forget the kiss, honey, I’m gonna give you a night you’ll never forget. Just before they left she told Ares and Achilles that she was arming her men and she’d done it in such a sneaky and innocuous way that they never thought to object. God, I love you. The werewolf was steadily approaching from his left so Daniel scooted around to the right just a tad to buy himself a few more seconds while he fished the items out of his pockets. Maybe tall, dark and hairy was the reason David took off with Callestah or maybe they were in the cabin. One good thing, the beast didn’t have any blood on its fur or on those massive fangs dripping with spit and the anticipation of a tasty meal. It ain’t gonna be me, buddy. Daniel flicked the cap off of the first aid spray. It was so close now that Daniel could smell the stink of its matted fur. He felt the things hot rancid breath blow past his head. Wait. Wait. Wait. Daniel’s heart thudding so loud and so hard he was sure it would fail him before he could… Now! Swiftly springing to his feet, he held the aerosol can close to him and the lighter further away. “Smell me, did’ja? Not for long.” He rolled the ball on the Zippo and the flame burst to life as the hungry monster roared in Daniel’s face, its black claws reaching out to tear off a tasty piece of flesh. FWOOSH! Instant flame thrower. A mighty burst of fire sprayed in the werewolf’s face; it yowled in pain and with drew as its fur caught. Daniel ran back past the well, past the cabin and down the path he’d come here on with the beast yelping in pain behind him. For an instant he wondered if he should go back and make sure David and Callestah were not in the cabin but at his feet were three sets of prints, two leading in and one leading out. David. They were not in the cabin. Before he could consider himself safe and put the spray away Daniel heard the howling of the animal behind him and it was getting closer. Daniel picked up the pace, his sore and tired legs grateful for the energy from the sugar-fix he’d just indulged in. Risking a small glance behind he saw the beast gaining on him the fur by its eyes charred and blackened was still smoking as it ran on all fours to catch up to its cunning prey. Pushing his legs to go faster Daniel looked around for a place to turn or to hide, he couldn’t keep following the footprints for that would lead the monster right to David and Callestah, who, with any luck at all, were so far away by now that the damn thing couldn’t catch up to them anyway. Daniel saw no breaks in the path only the thick cover of the strange trees from which he felt the stare of a thousand pairs of eyes just as he had when they entered this fairy tale forest from hell. This place was alive and watching. It ate Andrew F. Hartley. Good, maybe it would get indigestion and not want another taste for a while. Out of the corner of one baby blue eye, just as Daniel started to turn and face the path again, the monster leapt at him. Daniel had just enough to time to see it and duck. The snorting snarling creature dove over him and landed on the path in front of Daniel Jackson. Skidding to a stop it turned around and rose to its hind legs. Ahhhffffpppp……it snorted and then let out a loud growl…..grrrrrrrrrrr. The hands at its side clenching and unclenching as it stared at the living man who’d invaded its space. There was no mistaking the bloodlust in its pitch black and slightly singed eyes. Daniel raised the pieces of the makeshift thrower and gave out two quick bursts of fire. The creature raised an arm to shield its face and backed away. “Did ya like it? Huh, want some more?” Garrrrrrr……it snarled louder great gobs of saliva oozing from the corners of its mouth. “Come on,” Daniel taunted as they stood face to face on the rutted path with the small fame from the Zippo lighting up the scant space between them, “come get some more.” The hellish creature strained its head upward so that every muscle from its neck to its toes stretched to the limit standing out in a bulging show of primal strength and superiority. It let out a sound which came from the deepest depths of this wicked place, sounding a howling battle cry before it charged at him with coldly fixed eyes. The ground shook as it dropped to all fours and sprinted at Daniel. One last time he raised the first aid spray and depressed the button. FFFFWWWOOSH Daniel didn’t let up on it. He moved the bright orange flame up and down in a long sweeping motion. The charging beast that was growling in battle now cried out in pain as it broke out in flames from its face to its mid-section—its tender hairy balls roasting in the warmth of the fire licking its dick. The animal, ruled by instinct and anger, did not stop running at him. All around the air filled with a thick black smoke that make the gloomy fog and mist even more depressing if not for the cheerily burning fires in Daniel’s hand and in the fur of the beast. A flaming mass of primal instinct flung itself at Daniel and connected, the first aid spray flew out of his hand and the lighter extinguished as they impacted crashing to the forest floor. Massive teeth stared at him from behind heavy haired jaws slick with spit and hunger as the werewolf gnashed out trying to get a good piece of him as an appetizer. The fire on its chest was put out by the crashing of the two bodies but its face still had small tufts of flames and smoke smoldered from behind its ears as it roared in Daniel’s face. Closing his eyes against both the force and the reek of the animals’ breath he searched the ground for the lighter which landed next to his hand. Groping for it and finding it with one hand while struggling to keep those snarling gnashing biting teeth from ripping him to shreds with the other arm and his legs he flicked the wheel back and held it against the animals’ fur. Small flames leapt at the wolf’s flanks, at first they just seemed to make it madder but once the pain of the fire set in the animal started to yowl again. Fur burns quickly, just about as quickly as human hair, soon the little flames became bigger flames that could not be ignored. The animal now starting to radiate fire backed off Daniel and for a moment hovered in its place wondering what it should do. It dropped to its knees as the intense pain of burning fur became the searing of burning flesh. It yelped and yowled with the agony it felt as it fought to put the flames out. Without thinking about it, Daniel fished in his pocket for the lighter fluid and didn’t hesitate to squirt great streams of it on the blaze. Great flames sprung up engulfing the entire animal which crashed to the forest floor in crying in anguish. The stench. That was the worst part of the scene. Daniel didn’t know when the last time the animal had bathed but judging from the smell it had been a very long time indeed. Stuffing the lighter and fluid into his pockets while fighting the urge to find a way to put the creature out and end its suffering he raised his arm to cover his nose and ran down the path following David’s foot prints.
