Chapter One

I run for hope, I run to feel
I run for the truth for all that is real
I run for your mother, your sister, your wife
I run for you and me my friend
I run for life

Not since they were four years old had Daniel and David Jackson slept so soundly side by side in the same bed. All through the night Calla dabbed away beads of sweat that rose on their foreheads and then tucked the blankets closer over spent shaking bodies. Winter’s biting chill outside and darkness within she tended the fire in the hearth making it sure it never dimmed and that it kept the room warm and alive in a rosy glow. She sang to them, a tale about some Knight of Old who slew a dragon and became well-known, heralded a hero, only to let it all go to his head and lose his lady love. It was a sad tale but then again she didn’t feel very happy.

Settling on the bedroom floor next to Daniel she took his sleeping hand in her own and cuddled it to her sore cheek. “I love you. All will be well, you’ll see. All will be well.” As she kept her vigil the night stretched out for eternity before her each time she looked at the clock sure that an hour or two had passed it was less than a few minutes. The men in the bed slept, they turned a little and moaned often. When they woke they would be very hungry, their muscles would ache and their minds would still be trying to piece together their adventure in the Underworld.

For now they would sleep and she would keep her watch. Soon they would wake. She would cook for them and they would eat. She would massage their tired aching muscles and she would soothe their worried minds. She would tell them how brave they were and how proud she was. They would regain their strength. They would be well. Yes, indeed, all would be well once more. Soon.

A pin prick of pink light sparked up from nowhere. It grew into a floating ball and then became the shape of a woman. “This is where you live?” The Lady Callestah asked as she looked around the comfortable bedroom. “I like it.”

“I don’t recall asking you here.” Calla rose to greet the woman who was her twin but was not her twin. Unlike Daniel and David who, in an embryonic stage, had once been the same person and then became two who went on to, you know….be born…..grow up….learn things…..experience things…..have a fucking life!...this….this thing, this abomination! was her. That was her body. Her voice. Her eyes. Her hair. But the mind within the abhorrent creature was a bit different from the one in Calla’s head and that body, while shapely and familiar, didn’t have the wear and tear Callas' did. “Get out of my house.” She said her voice hoarse.

“Why are you so angry with me? What did I do, Calla?” The Goddess gazed down at the two men sleeping peacefully on the bed. “Why not let me restore them? If not for yourself then do it for them. I owe them much they endured many hardships to bring me here.”

“Get away from them.” Calla pushed the other woman away from the bedside and stood directly between the sleeping men and the invader. “I will tend them. I will care for them. I will restore them.”

“You are ill.”

“I am not.”

“You are not strong enough to use your magick for this? Such a simple task.” The Goddess clucked her tongue to the roof of her mouth; tsk-tsk-tsk. “You say you love them but you will not give them the aid they need. That is love?”

The bitch was right, before they went to the Island Calla felt like she could take on the world….at least in body. Her mind was still suffering from a bit of slippage but that was all right. As it stood now, she couldn’t very well tell Up from Down but so long as she kept focused on Daniel and David then everything else seemed to fall into place or at least offer her a direction to go in. Calla’s body the one that wasn’t as shiny and new as the other woman in the room was weary. True, a lot of her time on the Island was nearly as adventuresome as the Jackson twins’ had been but that was no reason for her to feel this tired...this heavy. Perhaps Daniel and David had not been able to extract the Xerinium from her system after all and the health she enjoyed was only temporary and not meant to endure. “They didn’t do it for you.”

“No?” Callestah asked with a slight grin. “Then why? For you? So you and Daniel can have a long happy life together? Partly, yes, perhaps.” She sighed. “But, also, I think, because it weighs on his mind. The fact that he could not help you could not protect you from Eros and….all the rest. So then, you see, at least in part, he did it for me as well.” A long slender hand one which had a gold ring on every finger reached out to touch Daniel and was swiftly batted away.

“I said, don’t touch them. I have healed their wounds. They sleep now.Do you think me stupid and that I do not know what you want? Haven’t you stolen enough from me already? My body? My Father….My Son.” She said through gritted teeth. “What’s next? My Daughter? I don’t think so and you’re damn sure not going to steal them from me. I warn you Callestah, I am most determined in this.”

“I see that you are.” Callestah gingerly withdrew her outstretched hand. “I am not trying to steal them from you, not them.” She nodded at the sleeping men. “Not Ares and not your Son. I owe you a great debt. I understand from Ares that we are leaving here very soon and I wish to repay this debt before I go. Why don’t you see this? After the ritual I will be able to…..”

“There will be no Ritual. What there is if you left inside me….” She tapped harshly on her breastbone. “Doesn’t want to go….funny, huh? Go figure.”

The Lady Callestah sighed sharply and shook her head. “Ares didn’t even ask you. This body,” she looked down at it and laughed. “Somehow he just took it from you. No wonder you’re so angry.” She sympathized. “I would be most upset as well. However, what there is of me left inside you must be freed because I am not complete.”

Calla laughed, it started out as a titter then broke off into fits and starts of chuckling and crescendoed to a full out belly laugh which made her double over in pain and begin to cry. When she was able to get control of herself once more she stood erect. In her place in the shadow, Callestah couldn’t see that Calla’s cheeks and eyes were cherry red from the hysterical fit. “How’s it feel?” There was no joy or laughter in her voice. “Do you like it? Being incomplete? Get out. I owe you nothing. Go back to that…..Lover…of yours, whichever one you’re taking tonight, tell him I said that he can go fuck himself. You’ll not get anything more out of me or take anything more from me.”

“Ares will have something to say about this.”

Calla took a purposeful step forward into the light. Bruising was clear on her lower jaw and up her left cheek. “Father…oh pardon me, my mistake, my Lady…..” she mumbled through trembling lips, “ARES…. can go to hell! I will not do anything for that bastard!” Overload can make people do strange things sometimes; Calla pursed her lips gave her fingertips a kiss then smacked her own small behind indicating what else Ares could do should he not like the idea of going to hell. “Until then, just get out of my house you’re not welcome here neither is Ares.”

“Your Son?”

“Tell him don’t come back. I never want to see Nicholas again.”

“You are harming none more than yourself, Calla. You will have to give me one of them and you know it.”

“Will I?” She tittered. “What’s wrong? Ares was unable to weed out all of my imperfections?” She tittered again almost insanely this time. “All of those things which made me less than acceptable to him and less than Divine in his eyes.”

“I need David, you will give him to me. Or would you rather Daniel….”

“You’ll have to slit my throat before you claim either of them.” She said defiantly. “You are nothing but a cheap imitation of me, I am the Daughter of Lord Ares and Lady Aphrodite, not you!”

“You just want all three of them to yourself! You’re a selfish spoiled little brat!” Callestah spat.

“Oh really?” Calla laughed insanely. “What’s wrong, did the truth hurt your feelings? You will never be me and you will never take anything from me!”

“Well, if this is the way you’d like it….” In a flash of pink light the Lady Callestah disappeared. “We’ll see what Lord Ares has to say about all of this.”

“Tell him he can kiss my white ass!” Calla shouted to the empty room. Weary and helpless Calla fell to the floor at Daniel’s side once more. “I love you, Beautiful. I will not let her take you from me.” Nor David, she couldn’t lose him either, wouldn’t lose him either. They were brothers and they had suffered much and lost much and now they had the chance to put things right. She would see to it that they were not absent from each others lives any longer.
