Barters N Garters Chapter Five I’ll be there for you All was quiet and getting darker by the second in Calla’s bedroom. The painkillers were kicking in and making her sleepy though she refused to give in and close her eyes. I can’t let them see me like this, was the only thought running through her head and it ran in circles like a track runner in a marathon. Slinking off the chaise she toddled over to where David lay sleeping. “Sa’Tan, David, can you hear me?” Calla whispered in his ear. “Please, I need your help. I am injured.” Taking his hand in her own she held it to her cheek. “Please hear me.” Calla begged stroking his hand along her face. “Please heal me.” While David didn’t wake up some part of him did hear her little strands of electric blue energy started springing up between his finger tips. “Thank you, I will repay your kindness when you wake,” she promised. The first order of business was her feet. Even though it was outrageously painful even with the aid of the painkillers, she raised them to his hand. The first night she returned to Earth, when Daniel brought her home a little over twenty years ago, he’d done this very thing for her on a hillside by a camp fire. Calla still remembered that night as if it weren’t any further away from her than yesterday. So gentle and loving when he took her battered feet into his hands and healed them for her. Part of her wished she could count on him to do that now but the energy he raised was spotty at best now that he was Immortal. (Of course the really good thing about Daniel healing her was that she no longer had to return the favor and the wounds simply vanished. He no longer took them on himself as she had always done.) Sometimes, she’d do anything to get those early days back. That short window of time before David came, when they were just getting to know each other and everything was shiny and new. Even though he was out cold, David heard her and responded. In no more time than it takes to feed the family cat her body was good as new once more. Well, maybe not that good but when they woke they would see no outward signs of injury. That was a very good thing. The last thing she wanted was for them to feel they had failed in some way. She’d begged Daniel not to go and not to do this for Ares, he wouldn’t’ listen. Calla understood that part of him needed to go to the Underworld and rescue the ‘little girl’ trapped there so she tried not to stand in his way although it was against her better judgment. However, deep in her heart, Calla hoped they’d turn around and come back, that they would be unsuccessful in obtaining that part of her which had been lost so long ago. They would deny Ares his prize. That hadn’t happened. The brothers had been very successful, not only had they come out of the Underworld alive and with the little girl they sought but Andrew F. Hartley and Eros met their final ends as well. This she tried to be happy about because she knew Daniel and David would not want her to object. They were dreadful men, yes, they were, still Eros was her Brother and Hartley—well, Calla would always believe that her fault, like Ares she would never see Hartley for the loathsome monster he was. Unlike his Immortal brother, David Jackson even in his sleep did take the wounds on himself and that was no good. Calla rose on steadier but still sore feet and found just enough strength left to finish the job. Couldn’t have David walking around with busted toes and a huge gash on his side—one which was eerily reminiscent of a wound he’d left her with so many years prior. Now she was tired, she should go back to the chaise and lay down but it was lonely over there. There was a bit of room between them on the bed, surely it was enough for her to squeeze into as she’d done not that long ago. Carefully climbing onto the bed rail, she stepped over David and wriggled down between them, reaching for his hand but laying her head over her Husband’s heart. “I love you, Daniel.” Calla said softly. “You’re so very good to me. How will I ever thank you?” The sleeping mind of Daniel Jackson heard her words, words he’d heard several times before and they always conjured up an image of her ‘thanking’ him. Always warm. Always pleasant. He let out a grunt and then a smile. “Daniel? My love? My Lord? Daniel?” Another grunt and a wider grin. Calla let go of David’s hand to hold Daniel’s face in her palms. “Can you hear me? Please wake up.” Her lips brushed over his and to her astonishment he responded in kind. “Yes, that’s it. Come back to me, my love.” “Kitty?” His beautiful baby blue rolls rolled open. “Kitty?” “Yes,” she smiled wide as tears filled her eyes and elation soared in her swiftly beating heart. “I’m here and so are you. It is so good to see you again. For a while I thought you’d never come back.” “Ah, geez, I had the strangest dream.” Daniels’ head was groggy and his body felt as though it had been stuffed with sand or rocks, it was so very hard to move. “David?” He asked through dry lips. “Your brother is right here next to me, my love, I’ve been taking very good care of both of you.” “How long?” Looking at the clock by the bed it was less than two hours before a full day would go by. “Not too long. Rest now. Sleep, I will watch over you.” That sounded good but, “I think I have to use the bathroom.” There was no thinking involved, he knew he had a damn full bladder and if he didn’t get to the toilet soon it was going to make one hell of a mess. Daniel stumbled out of the bed they shared and to the bathroom where he found the floor soaking wet, the tub full of water and still rumbling bubbles. “You forgot to shut off the tub.” He reached out and pushed the big silver button which ceased the jets. The water on the floor looked a little pink. Is that blood? Maybe it was just the light in here and his fuzzy head. Standing at the toilet Daniel emptied his bladder for what seemed like days and, oh man, did that feel good! Looking in the bathroom he noticed the thick beard on his chin and thought that he needed a shave but it wasn’t as thick as David’s yet. “I’m hungry,” both Daniel and his stomach grumbled. “What was for dinner?” Standing there his head still clearing he looked down at the still unfamiliar sight of his Wife in bed with his brother. David was starting to stir. Dinner. They hadn’t had a proper dinner, things were just too busy today. “Leftovers, nothing special. I’ll make you something.” Calla got out of the bed. “What the fuck?” “What’s wrong, my love?” She asked rushing to his side afraid he would slip back into unconsciousness or perhaps fall down. “There’s blood on your robe. It’s all over your robe.” Oh crap! Calla looked down at the white robe and saw… “There’s nothing there, Beautiful. See?” She picked up her arms and turned around to show him that the robe was perfectly white and perfectly clean. “You’re just tired, that’s all. Come back to bed,” she guided him to it and then settled him into it. “I will fix you something warm to eat.” “I’m sorry, honey.” He reached out to hug her and she very gratefully accepted the warm strength of his arms around her. “I guess I’m just fuzzy.” “Of course you are, you had a very major ordeal, Daniel. It will take a little time for you to recover. Now I want you to rest and I will find you some food.” “I love you, Kitty. I’m a really lucky guy.” “No, I’m a lucky girl.” Calla brought him back to the bed and brought the covers up over his chest. “Stay there and I’ll be right back.” She laid a kiss on his forehead. “It’s very good to see you again.” See you. See you. Those two words jogged his memory. “I did see you.” “I see you too.” She chimed with a smile. “No, in the Underworld, I saw you, that wasn’t a dream.” Had she been there? Maybe. It was so difficult to remember the exact events and now that the pain was gone there was no reason to remember. “I think you’re mind is still sleepy. I’ll be back.” Leaving the room she knocked up the door to the room the girls were sharing. “Mom, what are you doing up? You look great.” She gasped. “Your Father’s awake. Perhaps you would like to say ‘hello’ to him?” That was all it took, Colleen was off down to the hall to hug her Father and welcome him home without betraying her Mother by telling him of the state she’d been in. There were secrets in this family, a lot of them, it wasn’t her place to give any of them away.
