Sara Chapter One “Hey Sam, are you in here?” Dr. Daniel Jackson said as he turned into the lab she said she was going to be in that afternoon. “No, sir. Major Carter should be back soon. Is there something I can help you with?” a woman’s voice said from behind a computer terminal. Daniel stopped dead in his tracks when he saw a woman peek her head around the computer monitor. “Um, I just had a question for her.” “Okay,” she said smiling at him and then returned to her work, typing away. He walked around the desk to find a beautiful woman in her Air Force blue uniform covered in a white lab coat. Her skirt had ridden up just a little so he could see her strong, long legs accented by black pumps that were probably a little higher than regulations allowed. “What are you working on?” “A chemical analysis of the metal Major Carter brought back with her from P2-X74,” she said while she continued to type away. A few more seconds of typing away, the young woman finally stopped and turned towards Daniel. “Sorry, I wanted to get that study running. I’m Captain Sara Riley.” “Doctor Daniel Jackson,” he told her as they shook hands. “Dr. Jackson, I’ve heard much about you. It’s nice to finally meet,” she said as she tucked her chin length hair behind her ear. There was something about her that Daniel found mesmerizing. Her skin creamy white, chin length red hair that had a natural curl at the ends and her eyes, it was her eyes that pulled him towards her. Her deep blue eyes seemed to penetrate him as if her eyes had the capability to see into his soul. He had never seen eyes that held so much mystery and power behind them. “How long have you been working here?” he asked, trying not to stumble over his words. “A few weeks. This is my first major project.” “So what have you found so far?” “Well, this metal that Major Carter brought back, well, I guess you brought back too. It’s quite fascinating. There are some properties that are of great interest. If we can replicate it here, we would be able to make our airplanes lighter and stronger than what we have currently in service. The problem is it looks like some of the elements used to make it are not found here on earth,” she told him excitedly but then realized she was the only chemist in the room. “But I’m sure you’re not interested in molecular composition.” “True, but it’s still pretty interesting.” “With all the things that we have discovered from other worlds, we have already added five new elements to the periodic table. It must be amazing to go off world.” “Most of the time. Are you assigned to a team?” he asked. “No, and I don’t think I will be. I’m just a specialist here to do lab work.” “You would be surprised where lab work can bring you,” he said as he caught himself gazing into her dark blue eyes. “I’m just glad to be here,” she said pulling her eyes from his and tucking her hair behind her other ear. “I don’t know what could be keeping Major Carter. She said she was going to see Doctor Fraiser, but that was a while ago.” “I don’t mind waiting as long as I’m not in your way.” “No, not at all Doctor Jackson. I was going to run to the mess and get a cup of coffee while the computer ran the study.” “Want some company?” he asked, not wanting her to disappear quite yet. “Um, sure. But I thought you were waiting for Major Carter?” “If she’s with Doctor Fraiser, it could be a while,” he chuckled, knowing how his friends could be. Sara hopped off her stool and followed Daniel out of the lab after making sure that the computer was running properly. They walked down the gray corridors of the SGC, Star Gate Command, toward the mess hall. Daniel sat across the table from Sara with their coffees. Her dark blue eyes, darker than he had ever seen, mesmerized him. “So what brought you to the SGC? We don’t have too many civilian contractors here,” she asked. “I was originally brought in to just do a translation in the early phases of the program.” “So you have been ever since?” “Almost, I lived on for Abydos for just over a year.” “Why did you come back?” “My wife was taken prisoner by the Gao’uld and became a host for Amonet.” “Oh, I’m sorry,” she said surprised and saw that he still hurt from his loss. Sara couldn’t imagine how bad something like that would be, worse than death itself. “Its’ okay. She died three years ago, several months after she gave birth.” “You have children?” “No, Apophis was the father, but Shifu, the Harsesis child is not at all like his father,” he said with a proud look in his eye. “If you don’t mind me asking, how do you know that is the fact with a three year old?” “Shifu is a very special child. If you were to see him today, you would think he was twelve years old or so.” “Wow.” She shook her head. “Things are so different from the world we grew up in.” “You could say that. So what about you?” “Not much to say, Doctor. I was an Air Force Brat, went to the Academy, did a few years serving my country and then they sent me to grad school, now I’m here. Like I said, not much,” she said shrugging her shoulders. “There you are, Riley,” Major Samantha Carter said coming into the mess. “I thought you were running the analysis today?” “Yes, ma’am. The computer is running it right now, but it will take an hour or more to run the cycle so Doctor Jackson and I came to get a cup of coffee. I didn’t think you would mind, ma’am,” Sara replied, standing up and coming to attention. “At ease, Captain. That’s fine,” she said to Sara. “Just get me when it’s complete and add a radiation measurement to the list of tests. I’d like to see if it could be used to case the naquida reactor I’m working on.” “Yes, ma’am,” Sara replied as she pulled out her palm pilot and made notes. Sam gave Daniel a look while Sara was focused on her PDA. She was curious about why he was with her having coffee but didn’t want to embarrass her friend in front of Sara. Sam said good-bye and left the mess. “I though you had a question for Major Carter?” Sara asked when they were alone again. “Oh, yeah. It wasn’t all that important,” he replied. “I should get back to the lab.” “Okay, I guess I should get back to work too.” They both stood up and exited the mess hall and headed for the elevator. Inside the elevator, after their destinations were entered, Sara leaned up against the wall as they stood there in silence for the ride. The door opened for Sara and she began to exit but was stopped by Daniel, gently touching her arm. “I was wondering if you wanted to have dinner with me tonight?” he asked, surprised that the words came out of his mouth. She smiled, paused for only a second and said, “Sure.” “Okay, so I’ll see you tonight. May I pick you up at seven?” he asked, looking into her dark blue eyes. “Sounds good, Doctor Jackson,” she said with a smile and then turned and headed down the corridor, leaving Daniel alone in the elevator watching her walk. The doors cut off his view of her as they closed. He couldn’t believe that he had just asked out a perfect stranger, a beautiful stranger, to dinner. It had been so long since he had done anything like that at all that he was surprised how easily it went. Sara was back at the lab, pacing the room. The data did not come out the way she had expected. She was trying to figure out what the problem was, but it wasn’t coming to her. “Riley, how is the analysis going?” Major Carter asked as she entered the lab. “Not the way I planned, ma’am. I feel like I am missing something,” Sara replied, still pacing and running her fingers though her hair in frustration. “So what do you think needs to be done?” “I’m not sure. Maybe a spectral analysis, but I think it may be the sample. It could be tainted.” “Keep on it, but let me know. I will recommend to have a team collect another sample, but I can not promise anything right now.” “Thanks, Major.” “So what’s going on with you and Daniel?” Sam said more causally. “It was just coffee, ma’am. He actually stopped by looking for you.” “Really?” Sam said. “What do you think of him?” “Nice, I guess. It was only a cup of coffee, but…” she trailed off. “But what, Sara?” Sam asked intrigued. “He asked me out for dinner tonight,” she said, biting her lower lip to try to contain her excitement. “Oh, really,” Sam said jokingly. “How long were you going to wait to tell me?” Sara smiled, seeing that she had gained the camaraderie of her senior officer. That meant a lot to her, especially being new to the mountain plus this was Major Samantha Carter, one of the members of SG-1 and a brilliant officer and scientist. At seven o’clock exactly, Sara’s doorbell rang. She was a little nervous, but was too excited to slow herself down. At the door, Sara took a deep breath and opened it to see Daniel standing there wearing dark slacks, a dark lightweight sweater and a dark gray sports jacket plus he had removed his glasses. It was a big change from the olive drab utility uniform he wore early in the day. All she could do was smile for a few moments before she invited him in. “You look nice, Sara,” he said as the door closed behind him. She stood there in a dark blue strapless dress with a gold print all over it and big, pink fuzzy slippers. “Nice shoes.” Sara looked down at her feet and realized that she had forgotten she had them on. She laughed and said, “Oh, yes. It’s all the rage. I’ll be right back.” Still chuckling at her slippers, Sara quickly changed into her strappy sandals and returned to Daniel, who’s face lit up when she entered the room. “I can’t believe I did that,” she said re-joining him. “If you hadn’t said anything, I would have walked right out of here wearing them.” Daniel helped Sara into his car. It wasn’t a fancy car, just your average Toyoda, but it got him where he needed to go and it was reliable. He just couldn’t get over how beautiful she looked and here he was helping her into his car, a woman who he had known only a few hours. This was something that never happened to him, he rarely got a second look from women especially from a woman as beautiful as Sara. Dating was something he did practically none of anyway, he didn’t have the time with a job that he loved and because the thought of Shar’e was usually never far in his mind, but not tonight. As they drove out of her neighborhood, they chatted about nothing. Incidental things like the weather. She really enjoyed his company. He was smart and good looking, plus very sweet, not a normal combination in the circles of men she normally associated with. The impression that she got from most of the females on base was that he was one of the more sought after men at the mountain. They all wanted to ‘get to know him better’ and Sara couldn’t blame them. Her fingers itched to run her fingers through his sandy blond hair that even though was kept short, still had a “floppy” quality that made him look like the boy next door. He had to put his glasses back on to drive. Sara couldn’t decide if he looked better with his glasses or without, both were equally delectable.
