Chapter Three
The Next Day

“Hey, Danny,” Jack said as he caught up to his friend who was walking down the hall at the SGC going towards his office. “You just get in?”

“Yeah Jack,” Daniel replied. Jack was probably the only person in the universe that could get away with calling him Danny.

“You must have worked too late last night. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you come in this late.”

“Overslept a bit. That’s all.”

“So what was her name?” Jack teased, like he usually did.

Daniel usually had some witty come back, referencing some project he was working on, but this time his face turned bright red and looked as if he got caught with his hand in the cookie jar.

“Don’t tell me you actually went out on a date with someone,” Jack said surprised.

Daniel pulled him into his office and closed the door, not wanting the whole SGC knowing his personal business. “Yeah, I did have a date last night.”

“You dog, holding out on me. So how was it?”

“Real nice, very nice in fact.”

“So where did you meet this mystery woman?”

“Her name is Sara Riley and she’s a chemist,” Daniel said as he sorted through some papers on one of the tables in the room, trying to look busy.

“Air Force?”

“Yes, a Captain. She’s analyzing that metal we brought back from P2-X74 last week.”

“Good for you. I was beginning to wonder if you were ever going to have some fun. And by the look of things, it was a lot of fun.”

“You could say that, “Daniel replied, avoiding eye contact with him.

Jack laughed and patted him on the shoulder. “And here I was going to see if you wanted to go fishing next weekend. I guess you have better things to do now.”

Daniel chuckled; glad that he had a real excuse why he couldn’t go fishing with Jack. “I guess I do.”

Sam was in the mess hall, eating lunch while she read some of her papers when Jack came in. “Hey, Sam. What ‘ch working on?”

“The power system for the naquida reactor. The charge isn’t holding and…”

Jack cut her off. “Forget I asked. Did you hear about Daniel? He actually went on a date, with a real woman, last night.”

“Sara told me when she got in this morning,” Sam said.

“You know her?”

“We’re working on the metal analysis from the sample from P2-X74. It could be a good material to make the casing for my reactor. Actually, she told me we might need to go back there for a better sample.”

“So she really exists and is not some alien in human clothing?”

“Yes, Jack, she’s real. And a good chemist for the amount of experience she has,” Sam laughed.

“How old is she? Don’t tell me she’s right out of college.”

“No, but I read her personnel file and she hasn’t always been a chemist.”

“Really, what was she then?”

“I’m not sure, but there is a few years of vague assignments in her file right after she got out of the academy.”

“Hmmmm, sounds like an interesting girl. Her last name is Riley?”

“Yes, Sara Riley.”

“Any relation to Chief Master Sergeant Peter Riley?”

“Her father, I think. Why do you know him?”

“Only by reputation. He was Spec. Ops.”

“Was?”

“Got sniped about 10 years ago, but he was able to save half of his team before they got him.”

“Really. I think I remember hearing that now that you mention it.”

“Hey guys,” Daniel said as he approached his friends at the table.

“Hey Daniel, we were just talking about your Sara. You didn’t tell me she was working with Sam.”

“You didn’t ask. What’s the big deal?”

“It’s just not every day that you walk around the place with you mind obviously not on work. So when do I meet this chemist of yours?”

Daniel shrugged, embarrassed that his friends were so interested in his personal life.

Sara needed to take a break. She had been staring at a computer screen for three hours and had nothing to show for it. After analyzing the metal sample for two weeks and had made no further progress she was ready to punch something. The answers were not coming to her and she was more convinced that she had a compromised sample and she couldn’t isolate the contaminate if she didn’t know what it was made of in the first place. Frustrated, she left the lab and went to the gym to work off some of the pent up energy.

At the large punching bag, she set to work as she kicked and punched it over and over. Sara admitted to herself that she was an excellent kick boxer. It was the only part of her previous training, except for firearms, that she kept up with. If she was to practice in the civilian world, Sara guessed that she would be at least a brown belt, but a teacher’s worst nightmare. In the military, they taught you how to survive which wasn’t always the same as doing the moves the way a teacher would want them done.

While taking her frustration out on the bag, Sara saw Colonel O’Neill enter the room. She noticed him looking at her, but what she was doing was not normal of most women in the military.

“Take it easy on the bag their, airman,” he said to her.

Sara jumped, not expecting him to be talking to her. “Better the bag then my computer, sir.”

Jack laughed. He liked her sense of humor. “Where did you learn to fight like that?” he asked.

“Hurlburt Field, Florida mostly, Colonel.”

“How do you know I’m a Colonel?”

“Everyone knows who Colonel O’Neill of SG-1 is, sir.”

“And you are?” he asked intrigued by this young woman.

“Captain Sara Riley.”

“The Sara Riley?”

“You know of me?” she asked shocked he knew her name.

“Just what Daniel has told me, which isn’t saying much,” Jack explained. “It’s good to finally meet you. I was wondering if you really existed or was just created as an excuse to not go fishing,” he joked.

“Nice to meet you too, sir.”

“I didn’t know they added units to Hurlburt Field?”

“What do you mean, sir?”

“Last I knew, only the Special Ops. Wing was there,” he said.

“Still is the only wing there.”

“And they have chemists in the wing?”

“No, sir. Just training,” she said, not wanting to volunteer too much information.

“Oh,” he replied, connecting the dots of her past. “So you weren’t always a scientist.”

“You could say that.”

“Like father, like daughter, I guess,” he said, realizing that she really did not want to talk about it. “I was stationed there myself for a while, too.”

“I know, sir. You’re photograph was still up on the wall when I was there.”

Jack was surprised that the vagueness in Sara’s file was that she was involved in the Air Force’s Special Operations. It was a rare occasion for a woman to be in that “training” unit, even with the changes in policy for women in combat. He wondered if Daniel knew about her past, but also knew he could not and should not tell his friend that his girlfriend was not always a chemist because Daniel was not privy to personnel files and it was not his place to tell him.

“Hey there stranger,” Sara said as she stood in the doorway of Daniel’s office.

“Hey there yourself. Come on in Sara,” Daniel said looking up from his books. He had just gotten back from another off world trip and was glad to see her again.

“So how was it?” she asked excitedly.

“Not bad. I found this,” he said as he lifted an ancient pot. On it was blue lotuses.

“It’s beautiful,” she exclaimed, running her fingers over it.

“All I could think of was you after I saw it. I’m just glad I found it when we were getting ready to leave, otherwise I would have been useless.” Daniel stood up and took the pot from her hands. “All I could think of was doing this,” he said as he took her face in his hands and gently kissed her.

“Not here, Daniel,” she said as she looked at the open door. He went over to it and closed it, locking the door before returning to her.

“How about now?” he said as he slid his hands around her waist and pulled her close. “I missed you,” he whispered into her neck as he nuzzled her.

“What if someone walked in on us?”

“No one will,” he said with a mischievous look in his eyes. He ran his hands up and down her back; she was already squirming, fighting herself. The conflict between duty and pleasure fought within her. It didn’t help that Daniel was so delicious. Eventually, pleasure won the battle as his hands slid under her shirt. His hot hands running over her cool skin made her feel dizzy.

He led her over to the couch on the far side of the office. He had slept on it many nights when he was working late, but this was a first for him and the couch. In the haste of his need for her, he practically ripped the buttons off her BDU pants. Daniel had been playing this scenario over and over ever since he found the pot with the lotus on it.

As fast as their hands could move, Daniel was inside of her. He slid smoothly inside her moist folds in one smooth push. Knowing they had to keep quiet, all she could do was moan as quietly. She was tighter than he could remember her being. They had been at it like rabbits ever since their first date. He didn’t know what it was about her that made him like this. Never before would he risk both of their careers and reputations with a stunt like this but he couldn’t get enough of her.

The sex was hot and fast. There would be time to savor every morsel of her later, when there was the time, and a bed. But she was like a drug to him, having to get a “fix” of Sara before he went completely crazy. Sara was riding a wave of orgasmic pleasure and Daniel could feel her muscles quivering around him. With one last thrust, he came with her.

Sara stifled a giggle when she finally could breathe enough oxygen. Daniel chuckled too as he imagined Jack walking in on the both of them, with their pants around their ankles.

“I can’t believe we just did that,” she said as he rolled off of her.

“Same here,” he said as he grabbed some tissues to clean himself up.

They were tucking their shirts back in to their pants when there was a knock at the door. They both jumped at the noise then Sara slid inside his bathroom, letting him answer the door.

“Jack,” he said as he unlocked the door and saw his friend there.

“You look surprised to see me,” Jack said as he looked into the office.

“What’s up?”

“Why was your door locked? Is Sara in here with you?”

“Jack… I was about to get cleaned up.”

“Yeah, right Daniel,” Jack said, less than convinced. “Well, anyway. A bunch of us were going to watch the hockey game tonight at my place. Come on over.” Jack looked behind him again, “Sara, you’re invited too,” he called out into the room.

“Jack, she’s not here,” Daniel protested.

“What ever Danny-boy. Game starts at seven,” he said as he winked at Daniel and then headed down the hall.

Daniel took a breath and closed the door. Leaning up against the door he started laughing. Sara emerged from the bathroom, laughing as well. Crossing the room to him, she put her arms around his neck.

“That was close,” she said. “Too close if you ask me.”

“You could say that again,” Daniel said as he placed a soft kiss on her lips. “How did you know it was safe for you to come out?”

“I was watching.”

“How? It looked like the door was closed.”

“I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve,” she told him.

“So do you want to go? To Jack’s I mean.”

“If you think you can behave yourself,” she teased.

“It will be a challenge, but I think so. I do know what doors lock securely at Jack’s place.”

“Then you have yourself a date, but I better finish up a few things before I can get out of here. Pick me up at six-thirty at my place, unless you want to come on over earlier to get out whatever you have in your system out,” she said as she slipped out of his arms and opened the door. She gave his a quick kiss before she left him alone in his office.

Sara looked through her closet trying to pick something out to wear. Its not like she had never been over a higher ranking officer’s house before but this was different. These were Daniel’s friends and that mattered more than any higher-ranking officer, even the commander in chief himself.

There was a knock on the door and she knew it was Daniel. She put on her robe and went to answer the door.

“Daniel, I’m sorry I’m not ready yet,” she told him as she let him in.

“Why, I love this particular outfit, but I doubt I would make it to the car let alone Jack’s place,” he said as he placed a kiss on her collar bone.

“Give me five minutes and I’ll be ready.”

“Can I help?” he said as he started to follow her towards the bedroom.

“Only if you want to watch the game here instead of over at Jack’s.”

“Okay, okay. You win. I’ll be good.”

“Only if you’re bad later,” she said as she winked at him and closed the bedroom door.

Daniel and Sara pulled up in front of Jack’s house. She was nervous, very nervous but tried to hide it from him. He helped her out of the car and they walked to the house holding hands.

As they waited for someone to answer the door, Daniel kissed the back of her hand. “Don’t worry. They’ll love you.” The door opened before she could reply.

“Daniel, Sara, glad you two could make it,” Jack said as he let his guests in his house.

“Thank you Colonel,” Sara said as she walked in the house.

“Please, we’re off duty. It’s Jack. Now come on in, the game is about to start.”

Sara smiled, “Thanks… Jack. Uh, who’s playing tonight? Daniel didn’t tell me,” she said, trying to continue to cover for their earlier time in his office.

“Hockey, Avalanche verses Rangers,” he said still not believing their cover story. “Make yourself at home. You know Sam and this is Teal’c,” he said as he introduced her to the huge Jaffa.

“Nice to meet you Teal’c,” she said as he stood in front of her.

“It is a pleasure, SaraRiley,” Teal’c said as he slightly bowed in a greeting. Daniel squeezed her hand and they took seats on the couch. Sam was on one of the chairs with a beer in her hand.

“Sara, Daniel, glad you could make it,” Sam said. “You know Sara; I think you’ve done something none of us have.”

“I’m sorry, what’s that?” Sara replied, hoping she had made the right decision coming with Daniel tonight.

“You’ve been able to get Daniel out of his office for more than five minutes.”

Sara relaxed hearing the others laughing. Daniel put his arm around her and they settled back to watch the game.

Sam entered the kitchen on her way from the bathroom. She stopped at the refrigerator and leaned up against it as she looked at how happy Sara and Daniel were. They looked like they were in love and she was jealous of what they had. So many times had she come close to happiness only to be stopped by the regulations or from the call of duty. There had been several moments where she would have thrown the regulations out the window to be with Jack. It would be amazing if they were together, but they both had too much baggage that they would bring that could ruin the friendship that she cherished.

“I think we’ve lost him, Sam,” Jack said behind her, also looking at the cute couple keeping themselves under control when it was obvious that they would rather be alone. He touched her shoulder and handed her another beer. “Our little Daniel’s found himself a girlfriend.”

Sam chuckled at his joke, but felt the same. At times their friend looked on the world, or worlds, with a child like view. They had been through so much together. She couldn’t count the number of times each of them was within inches of their life. The men of SG-1 were her friends and her family. It was sad to see Daniel go but Sam knew she wasn’t really loosing a friend, but gaining one.
