Coma White Chapter 5: Sam "Oh, why you look so sad? Sam
smiled. Normally, she'd be put off by this stranger who all of a sudden had
appeared in their midst. This girl who seemed to have
appeared from out of nowhere. She'd be suspicious if hadn't been for her
candor, the way she stood up for herself. She was comfortable in her own skin.
Even with her pale skin, her weird clothes and piercings. The way her breasts
moved with every breath.
With the NID and the Trust always hanging like ghost ready to strike, they'd
all learned to be on their guard, even when on the home side of the 'Gate. As a woman, Sam should've felt some sort of
discomfort towards Annie. It was hard to. Not even the proper way she'd been
brought up could let Sam feel anything but basic human emotions. Sure from time
to time Sam would notice the metal in her lip or the black on her nails, but
there was something about Annie that made you forget
to concentrate on WHAT she was, but WHO she was. By
the time the meal had ended, they all had developed some sort of affection for
Annie. She was quick and funny. She was utterly without boundaries, and when
she laughed, you really felt it. She was surprisingly and pleasantly smart, and
could keep up with Sam and Daniel, but was also brash and dry enough to joke
with the colonel. Truly, it was almost as if Annie had always been there. That
feeling of freedom seemed to be something that Annie gave off, because when she
talked, she gestured, when her attention was on you and you alone, you felt
that power. As if it were something she could just GIVE you, free of charge. Sam
was one of those people that connected but hid it well until it came down to
brass tacks. She'd known Daniel for what seemed like her whole life. Seven
years.
When they'd met, she'd been expecting something completely different
than what she got. A stuffy geek with his head on a little
less than straight. What she'd gotten was a young scholar barely old enough
to be her brother. A quiet gentle intelligence with a soft
caress of light air. His happiness and curiosity bled through every
pore. And easy on the eyes too with his boyish charm and electric blue eyes
that blazed with every emotion he felt.
She'd never forget that first time, when he'd sat without a care in the
world with Sha're by his side, them showing their care and devotion to each other
in every move they made. When Sha're was taken, Sam
had watched with horror as that spark in Daniels eyes began to die a slow
death.
Between being raped by Hathor, thrown in a mental institution, dying,
dying again, and then just for fun, dying once more, Daniel had been through
the wringer. Sam knew just how much these things
affected him; you could once you could read his face and his eyes. She
and Daniel had spent hours together, dealing with some problem or another,
whether it was in their work or their personal lives. Daniel had cried for
hours in Sam’s arms after his wife’s tragic death, or when he thought he was
losing Jack. Sam when her father was sick and dying. There was nothing that he
couldn't talk to her about or vice versa. Jack may have been Daniels lifeline,
but Sam held the end too, and was grateful for every moment.
She knew that Daniel was close with the colonel and that Daniel relied
on Jack for everything he was worth. In times past, that friendship had been
tested to the breaking point. It was Jack he'd gone to in order to stop the
healing device when he decided to join the 'glowworms' as the Colonel calls
them.
Sam shivered. She never wanted to remember THAT day again. Her beloved Daniel dying. She was overcome by grief for a
very long time. In fact, she didn't think she ever truly healed until the day
they’d found him alive and well a year later. When his memories had returned,
Sam became overwhelmed by this crushing grief, and had followed him around.
Eventually, with understanding eyes, Daniel actually let her catch up to him
and hold him. She did so for about two hours, crying out the horror that had
gripped her for a year. Daniel had eventually succumbed to the sympathetic
emotions as well, and they stayed that way, reaffirming their bond, and while
Daniels eyes never really returned to that brightness she'd seen that first
day, they did burn a little brighter, and that in itself was a blessing. In
Annie, Sam realized, what she'd seen was Daniels original spark. Suddenly, Sam
found herself wishing that this girl didn't go as quickly as she came. End of Chapter Five of Coma White This story along with all original characters and situations were created
