Coma White Chapter 13: Fathers "In all that I've done wrong I know I must Butterfly Kisses Two
days later, Jack called Annie to his office. One he rarely used. He'd rather
hang out in Daniels or now Annie’s office. But he needed the privacy today.
When the girl floated in, she smiled, and he wondered what Annie would've been
like had
"Jack?" Annie said her voice confused. Jack had never specifically
requested her presence before.
"Sit here babe." She sat, and crossed her fishnet covered
legs.
"What’s going on Jack?"
"Annie, I found the report on your father." Annie looked down.
"Jack, my father is gone. Died for God and Country," She said
bitterly. "And a traitor to both them and his
family."
Jack put his hand on her knee.
"Annie...."
"NO...if he loved us, he would've stayed home! With
me and Mom. Not been out there taking bribes and disgracing our family.
Instead he just....walked out."
"No, Annie, that's not how it happened. He loved you Annie. He sent
all his pay into a trust for you. Scraped by with the money he made on his missions.
He was helping the State Department root out Cuban arms dealers. He hoped that
whatever he did would keep the world safe for you to grow up in. The State
Dept. lied. He never took bribes. They had a spy in their inner workings, and
your Dad was in the wrong place at the wrong time. The Cubans had already
killed him. They had the perfect patsy for their cover-up."
Annie looked up. Impossible. "It was so hard to grow up without him. I
missed him and Momma every time I did something they should've been there
for." Annie’s face was covered with blackened tears,
"Annie, your Dad died protecting you. He sent letters to you and
your Mom, but they didn't get through. The General and I got them to tell the
truth Annie. They re-filed the report. Your father is now considered a hero for
helping to take down the ring. They're giving him a purple heart and a Silver
Star. And they've released all the money he saved for you."
"Th....th...they did?" Annie said
through her tears. Sniffling. Jack was so sad for this
girl. She looked so small and young. Still reliving the
horror of living without her father and with his shame. It was hard to
see her as a grown woman in love with his best friend. "Thank you Jack." She flung herself into his arms,
putting her head on his shoulder, sobbing. He remembered Charlie doing this
exact same thing. The loss of
Daniel stood in the office doorway, and Jack looked up, seeing Daniels
own pain reflected in his blue eyes. He knew too the pain that Annie was
feeling. Jack had, to a much lesser degree, taken over the job of protecting
Daniel. Annie looked up. And two pairs of eyes looked at him in that same way.
And Jack realized that while Charlie was gone, he would never be childless. Annie pulled back and looked at him with teary
but smiling eyes. She'd sensed Daniel there. Getting up, she placed herself in
the arms of her lover. Daniel hugged her, and put his head down on her
shoulder.
"Annie, Hammond and I were thinking about giving you
Annie nodded.
"I'd like that. Whenever you wanna do it."
Jack took something out of a folder. It was an old fashioned picture of
a man holding a gun and smiling in some jungle. He had a scarf on his head,
wearing old model Army fatigues, but his eyes were the color of sea green. The
name on his uniform read 'White'. It was
"Jack?" "Yeah?" He said, holding out a box of Kleenex.
"Thank you for giving me my father back. But even if you hadn't, I
wouldn't feel it. Not anymore. Not since I've gotten to know you." She
smiled and walked away with Daniel, And Jack looked at the ceiling. "Well kid, you ever thought of having a
much older......weirder sister?" He laughed.
Annie got a folded frame, and put the picture of
"It's okay Mom...Dad. I'm not alone anymore." End of Chapter Thirteen of Coma White This story along with all original characters and situations were created
