  Chapter 20:  Redefined

"Every time I lose control
You help me, you save me
Every time I lose myself
You find me, redefine me
And every time I hate myself
You love me, forgive me
Every time I lose myself
You find me, redefine me..."

   ONE MONTH LATER

Annie never got sick, but there she was, holed up in the infirmary. And this was SO the wrong time for it. Evidently, there was this horrid new kind of Jaffa that was ten times as dangerous as any other Jaffa in the galaxy. No one knew who they were or who they worked for. It was a shame because things had been quiet since the Haktyl incident. Missions on other teams going off without a hitch, no Tok'ra madness, just routine recon and sampling missions. She hadn't had to worry about Daniel for a few weeks. They'd even begun to have simple problems. Like Daniels old car which was failing. The decade old Jeep had begun to break down, and Daniel refused to replace it.

"Daniel....it’s a heap. We have enough freakin' money. Replace it, or we're gonna have the first "Pimp My Ride: the Stargate Edition."" Daniel narrowed his eyes, but they'd started shopping for a new one. In the end, they'd settled on an Earth conscious 2003 Dodge Durango.

It was almost normal. She kissed her husband goodbye at the 'Gate, and when he returned, although 'kisses' weren't exactly the name for what she did. As soon as their post mission exams were over, Daniel didn't even bother buckling his belt anymore. And it was embarrassing as hell to ask the General to replace his chair. He'd blushed to the roots of his hair when Jack had asked smartly how, exactly, the wheels snapped off. Daniel was not going to answer, because the truth was, they'd broken during a particularly hard ride Annie was giving him.

A week ago, she had stumbled out of their bed, and thrown up. Since she and SG-1 had had Chinese the night before in a party celebrating Jacks birthday, she chalked it up to bad food, and ignored it. But when the sickness hadn't passed in five days, Daniel dragged her kicking and screaming off to Frasier. Janet was just coming back from her lab when Annie sat up. She sensed a Gao'uld presence, but then realized it was only Jacob.

   "Janet, why is Selmak here?"

"To examine that new mechanical nightmare." Annie bit her lip. Those things were so dangerous.

"Tell her I wanna talk with her before she leaves. I never get the chance. So, what is it?" Annie noticed the doctor was subdued.

"Janet?" Annie looked at the small woman. Her brown eyes were nervous.

"Annie....I don't know how else to tell you this, so I'm just going to say it outright. You're not sick. You're....."

"Pregnant." Annie finished. She should've known. Janet looked at the girl.

She looked stunned. The doctor knew of Annie’s plans to train for offworld, and perhaps even join SG-1. That just wasn't possible now. There just wasn't any way around this. She didn't even know if Annie wanted a baby. If Daniel did. He'd not even tried with Sha're, and god knew, he didn't need any more things to worry over. But her main concern for her patient was key and so she looked at Annie with questions in her eyes.

"Annie....what do you want to do?" Annie blinked. She wondered what Janet was talking about until she realized the meaning.

"JANET! I can't kill it! This is a part of Daniel, and it stays right where it is. Look, he's already 37. If he's going to have a family, 'Gate or not, now is the time. And god knows he's good breeding stock." Annie winked. The doctor smirked.

"I have to report this to the General and the Colonel. It's simply too important." Annie nodded.

   "Let me tell them. Please."

Janet gave in. Annie looked scared and unsure of herself, which was the exact opposite of the Annie Janet knew. But these were difficult times. Anubis was out there, and they still had no effective means of fighting him. The replicators were out there somewhere, probably bent on awful revenge, and the alliances they'd all worked so hard for were all on shaky grounds. This wasn't the time to bring a baby in the world. But Annie had no choice. This was the time, so she closed her eyes and went to the General.

"General?" Annie called, knocking on his door. As she breathed in her corset, she realized her days of wearing THOSE were numbered.

"Come on in Annie." Annie sat in the seat opposite Hammond and bit her lip. She realized she oughta tell Daniel first, but if these two knew, it might make the blow to the base a little less, and that would make the blow to Daniel a little less.

"Can we....we call Jack in too?" She fidgeted. Hammond was suspicious. Annie was never like this. Never. Hammond called Jack to his office. When the Colonel reported as ordered, and saw Annie sitting there looking scared and dejected, he immediately stiffened.

     "Annie. What's wrong?" Jack said.

"Close the door. Please." When they were private, Annie got up and paced the room, then turned around, biting on one black tipped nail.

"Well, there’s no easy way to say this." Annie took a deep breath.

"Oh, Annie....whatever it is, I'm sure it can't be THAT bad..." Jack started.

"I'm pregnant." She deadpanned. Jack stopped dead in his tracks.

"You're....oh my god. Does Daniel know?" Annie shook her head.

"I thought to report it to you guys first, then find a way to break this to him. I don't....we haven’t. This all happened so fast. Three months ago, things were simple. I woke up, I danced and did tattoos all night, and I slept during the day. I had fun and moved on when I wanted to. Jesus, when did things get so screwy?" Annie was babbling at this point, putting her hand protectively over the life that was growing there. A microscopic piece of her and Daniel. The physical evidence of a love that had no business being. A love that made no sense. A redefined life, a redefined relationship. Everything was different and she was strong enough to do it.

"Annie.....honey, you know this.....changes things." Jack said lightly.

"I know. No offworld for a very long time." Annie sighed. It was a dream of hers. But she couldn't do it while she was knocked up.

"Annie.....do you want me to give you and Dr. Jackson the rest of the day off?" Hammond asked. He knew that he and Annie had a lot to talk about. When he and Ruby had learned of the arrival of Richard, they had spent a lot of time talking about it. There was a lot of emotion involved.

"Thank you General." Annie left the office.

"How do you think this will play out Jack?" Hammond asked.

"I dunno. Could go either way." Jack looked out after the girl. None of them had ever brought children into the SCG. R'yac was with Master Bra'tac, Sam hadn't bothered to get married or have kids yet, and god knows, he'd had his own nightmare with kids. But some part of him wanted them to be happy. There was so much darkness. Annie carried with her a lot of light. And now she carried the future of that light. Both hers AND Daniels. He kind of felt like he might be a grandparent.

Annie stopped at Daniels office. She walked in, and he looked up.

"Hey baby, how are you feeling?" Annie dodged the hug he tried to give her. Hurt painted itself on his face.

"We got the rest of the day off. Please. We need to go home." Annie told him. Daniel panicked. He was startled into action, and for once, did what he was told. He packed up his things and left with her. By the time they got to their house, Daniel was frightened. He'd never seen Annie like this. Subdued and serious. So serious. She led him to the living room, and sat him down.

"Daniel, we have to talk." He nearly shot out of the chair.

"What is it Annie!" She could feel the fear coming off him in waves. He thought the worst. Like cancer or something equally as deadly.

"Daniel....I'm...I....I'm pregnant." Daniel blinked at her for a moment, and then took off.

"That went well." Annie slumped into the recliner.

In the bathroom, Daniel threw up his breakfast. Oh god, he'd been so worried, so scared. A baby. His young, new wife. Pregnant. He really hadn't considered kids, but he guessed with how often they had sex, it was inevitable. She practically drained him dry everyday. He hadn't ever tried with Sha're, somehow knowing it wasn't the time. He'd supposed they'd have kids someday. Oh, this was so the wrong time, with the war out there getting worse and worse. He was already 37. Right or wrong time, this was the time, and he was ready to be a father, had been for a long time. Then it hit him. He was going to be a father. He'd made life. Created it. He stood up, looking at himself in mirror. Suddenly he felt virile, proud. A stupid male response to having given his wife a child. He ran back into the living room.

"I'm sorry Annie. I wasn't prepared. And I was scared that it was something really bad. God you scared me." Daniel stood. Something was on his face. Annie narrowed her eyes as she brushed her mind against his to see what that stupid grin was for.
