     Chapter 22: Miracles and Meanings.

"Can you hear my voice
Do you hear my song
It's a serenade
So your heart can find me
And suddenly you’re flying down the stairs
Into my arms, baby..."

They were about to have guests. Twenty minutes or so, she guessed, based on the twelve phone calls that they hadn't answered. God could it have occurred to them that perhaps they were SCREWING? She shook her head. Daniel was passed out. Had been for about fifteen minutes. Annie got up and showered, knowing she smelled of sex and the unique scent that was Daniel. But that wasn't the way to greet guests, even though she wanted to go back in the bedroom and wake him up just so he could put more of it on her. Damn, the thought of her being pregnant really tuned him up. She dressed in a pair of black velour boy shorts with the word "Bitch" on the back, a black long sleeved t-shirt decorated with 'Disturbed' band logo cut off to show her midriff, the neckline ripped out so one shoulder dropped off, and her hair up in a high ponytail. The wet length dripping onto the floor. She was reaching for coffee mugs when she felt a hand slap her on her ass.

"HEY!" Annie yelped. Daniel smirked, having dressed in a black t-shirt and some black sweats. He'd found himself wearing a lot of black since meeting Annie. Their lips met in a passionate kiss. He backed her onto the counter, and she flipped on the coffee maker before wrapping her hands in soft brown hair.

"Take off your shorts Annie." He whispered.

"Daniel! For god’s sake!" Daniel snickered.

    "C'mon." Annie rolled her eyes.

"Later. We're about to have visitors. Have your coffee." Daniel actually pouted, but poured himself a cup and drank it, watching her clean up the clothes scattered on the floor. She stopped by a picture on the mantle.

    "Danny baby?" She called.

"Yeah?" He followed her into the living room, and watched her straightening things.

"Stop staring at my ass." Daniel coughed.

"I wasn't!" Annie turned, her green eyes missing nothing.

    "Yes, you were."

"Well....it's a nice ass." His blue eyes twinkled from behind his glasses.

"How old is this picture?" She held up a picture of the team taken in the first year of the program.

    "Bout seven years now."

"Why did you cut your hair so short?" Annie cocked her head to one side.

"It was in my eyes all the time. It was only after it was done that it was brought to my attention how 'cute' I looked with it. That puppy dog thing all the nurses had for me then. Wanted to take me home and pet me. And not in that exciting way you do it, like I was some lost stray animal they had to take care of."

"Well, you WERE nursing some pretty serious wounds then Daniel. I don't think anyone had any hope that you'd find Sha're then baby. So you were a widower in full, even before she was gone. Women have this urge to take care of wounded animals."

"Was it like that for you?" Daniel looked at her carefully.

"No. I mean, I knew you were hurting. But most of all, I sensed this.....emptiness. Everything about you was so gray, like those ugly walls at the base. You were so COLD Daniel. Freezing with guilt and pain and loneliness," Annie teared up. "I'd never met someone who had resigned themselves to half a life. I knew you were strong. Maybe too strong. See, the guy in this picture had a look in his eyes that was gone and dead when we met. I don't know what's worse Daniel. That you let yourself die.....or that you were willing to let your SOUL die."

  She was sobbing.

"I was always looking for the reason I had this inside me. That's why I created the link. I couldn't bear to watch it. For the world to lose such a beautiful soul, so if you couldn't feel the light in your soul anymore, I'd give you the light in mine...”

"There's something cold and blank behind her
She's standing on an overpass
In her miracle mile...”

The words echoed through Daniels brain. Coma. He got it. All of a sudden he had it. She was always that sad girl looking for her miracle. Annie nodded at him. He'd finally put it together. He was Coma’s miracle.

"I thought I'd never find you...."

Daniel put his cup down and caught her as she fell. He was speechless. Thirty languages and he couldn't come up with ONE word, one saying, one sentiment that could describe how he felt. Sha're had given him her love. Jack, Sam, Teal'c had given him their friendship and family ties. But it’s not everyday someone literally offers you their soul. Has the power to hand it over.

   "What if....if I hadn't....loved you?"

"Sometimes great love just means great sacrifice." Annie held onto him. Daniel blinked away tears away.

"Dammit, I love you Annie." Daniel kissed her eyebrow rings, her nose ring, her lips, and let his tongue find and caress her tongue ring. The link buzzed to life. He ran his hands down to cup her ass and brought her into his lap, pressing their bodies together. He let his tongue lick down to her throat. Her fingers dug into his shoulders. Daniel caught fire, and was preparing to kick it into high gear, when she stiffened.

  "Daniel...?"

  "Mmmmmm...?" He was moaning.

"Daniel!!!" She called, startling him out of his lust.

"What?" He followed her eyes behind him, to where Jack, Sam, and Teal'c were all standing in the doorway.

Daniel turned red and buried his face in her neck. She burst into giggles.

"Gotta get those locks changed." He groused, before disentangling himself from his wife. He gave himself a moment to calm down before turning around and embracing his wife.

"And just what is it that YOU three want?"

"Daniel don't be rude.....the bed isn't going anywhere. Although I'm certainly glad we decided to remove those idiot castors you had on it."

Daniel leaned back on the mantle, that slightly smug smile on his face as his wife prepared for guests. For a girl who spent half her life with no one to host, she was good at it. She put out mats on the coffee table, and picked up the phone.

   "Pizza or Chinese?"

A quick survey was performed and pizza was decided on. She pulled the menu down from the fridge and made the call, then gathered glasses, pouring wine for Sam, Root Beer for Teal'c, grabbing a beer for Jack, and a Red Bull for herself. She placed them on a tray and put it down in front of them.

"Wow. Waitress in another life?" Jack quipped.

"Nope, a coffee bar outside Seattle in 99."

   "Seattle huh?" Jack asked.

"Yup. Had to go to pay my respects to Kurt on my way through the country." Annie replied.

"Kurt.....who?" Annie shook her head, putting her foot on the table, arched up and to the side, so you could see the black letters 'K.D.C.' on her ankle, with a funny looking smiley face and 1967-1994.

"Kurt Donnald Cobain, lead singer of Nirvana, and one of my favorite musicians of all time," She put her leg down and smiled, "He lived in Seattle and unfortunately, he passed away there in '94."

"Right. I was on the lecture circuit then....just months before I went with Catherine. They cancelled a lecture in a college I was supposed to speak at because he killed himself. Apparently, a lot of the students were in too much grief so they'd just shut down the school."

"Yeah, they shut down ours too. I was in high school then. Freshman. Course, I was only 14 then." Daniel winced and Jack snorted.

"Hear that Danny? We were hittin' the 'Gate, and she was a just a little schoolgirl." Annie rolled her eyes.

"And that would make YOU how much older?" Annie retorted. Jack coughed.

   "Never mind."

"Uh-huh." Annie cuddled back into Daniel, them fitting together perfectly. They looked like a young couple, Daniel having this ability to not age, and Annie looking fresh. Daniel had settled himself in the corner of one end of the couch, and she in his lap, her head resting in his shoulder. He had his arm wrapped around her protectively, and she stretched her legs out, her cute black painted toenails pushing against the other arm of the couch.

The others were just as rested. Sam had taken up residence on one side of the other couch, Teal'c on her left. Jack had taken the recliner. They all looked around. Annie took up a remote and started the stereo, playing soft jazz. She closed her eyes as Daniel continued to drink his coffee. There were dozens of candles lit. It was a comfortable and peaceful environment, created by Annie and Daniels love, 'And Pier One' Annie thought.

"Actually though, I think I might go back to school here. If I can't go offworld, I might as well finish what I started, and you'd all have to call me Doctor." Annie laughed, placing her hand on her tummy. She smiled.

"Oh great. Just what we need. Another smartass with alphabet soup after their name." Jack smarted off.

Daniel gave an indignant snort and Annie laughed.

"And creating another generation of smartasses while they're at it. It ain't enough I'm surrounded by eggheads, they gotta BREED too." Jack sat back in his chair. Sam laughed.

"C'mon Sir, this baby is a miracle."

"I too believe this child is a great blessing upon Daniel and AnnieJackson." Annie smiled at the Jaffa. She knew that her presence and her place in their family had helped him release some of the guilt he carried around because of Sha're.

"Yes, I know that Carter, T. Hey, maybe this can still be saved! C'mon lil one, hang out with Uncle Jack, I'll teach you all about hockey and shootin’ big honkin' guns."

"Stay away from my kid Jack." Daniel pointed at him. Jack just laughed.

Annie let herself float as conversation flowed around her, letting her mind take in the contented vibes and connections in the room. She caught Teal'cs eye, and the smile and bow he gave her spoke volumes. Annie took a deep breath and settled into Daniels body and his mind, their hands that joined over her tummy both held their wedding rings. Miracle miles could indeed be reached.
