Part One

"Sweet desert rose

Whose shadow bears the secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume that would torture you more than this..."

 February 12th, 2004

  "She's miserable Jack!" Daniel Jackson complained to his best friend and CO, but was getting no sympathy from the older General.

   "You knocked her up Danny, of  COURSE she's miserable. She's gotta stay home more often, she can't wear her old clothes, and all because her beloved husband couldn't keep it in his pants." Jack snorted. Daniel narrowed his eyes.

  "JACK!" Daniel hissed indignantly.

  They all knew that when calculated out, the time when Annie Jackson, wife to the SGCs multiple PhD holding archaeologist had gotten herself into the predicament of enceinte, it had been her own fault, since she had initiated the encounter that led to her current condition. In other words, her own hunger for her husband had gotten her pregnant. In fact, if Daniel recalled that night, it had been one of the most erotic nights of their early marriage, and he didn't regret it.

  They'd been married for less than a month when it had happened. The universe was in a state of war, and they had been searching for a weapon to use against Anubis, not to mention the crazy replicator problem currently infesting the galaxy. Fate had chosen that moment, in the midst of chaos, to finally grant Daniel his first child, and although it had severely curtailed Annie’s crazy gothic lifestyle, her dreams of gate travel, and her body distorting, Daniel knew she didn't regret it either. The telepathic link they shared didn't allow for lies. His wife’s powerful gift had become a serious ally, and when they had literally fused their souls together, Daniel felt a sense of peace and more complete than he ever had.

 Now that the war with Anubis was over, Daniel had more time to devote to his lovely wife. Seven months pregnant and beautiful, Daniel groaned even as he let his thoughts stray to the figure he'd left in his bed that morning. His wife, still asleep, nude in the sunrise, turning her normally pale skin golden. Her breasts were bigger, her stomach swollen, long legs tangled in their satin sheets. He remembered her light green eyes opening and her perfect mouth parting. She'd smiled, putting her hand over the space where their daughter lay safely in her mother’s womb.

  He'd been hard pressed to leave her, but the stress of the final battle with Anubis had left her weak, and Dr. Brightman had insisted on bed rest, so Annie stayed home and rested as much as possible. It was hard on his normally bouncy and hardworking wife, but this was their child, so she'd accepted it. She'd worked her powers to the brink helping to find the weapon, and the last horrific encounter had stretched her frazzled mind to the brink. She had fainted, bleeding from the nose.

   General Hammond, who'd been with her in the presidents office, had rushed her to the hospital, and while the rest of the brass and those in the know celebrated, Hammond had kept watch over Daniels weakened wife. By the time he, Carter, and Teal'c had returned to Washington, Annie lay near death. Terrified at losing his blossoming new family, Daniel had locked the door on the outside world stripped and joined his wife in her bed. His closeness and mental connection restored, Annie had made a rapid recovery, but the damage had been done. The doctors stressed her health, which meant that Daniel had to stay close and stable as well. He'd given up 'Gate travel, and worked from home a lot. Annie also worked, her doctorate in Egyptology was important to her, so she did her schoolwork, and lets face it, she had the best tutor anyone could ask for. It wouldn't belong before she could call herself doctor too. The sight of them next to each other in bed with matching laptops wasn't a rare one, and it proved to anyone who could see that they were truly in love.

  "Well, as cliché' as it is Daniel, V'Day IS in two days. Maybe you two need to get away. HEY! I'm the MAN right? Well, I've just granted you leave!" Jack laughed. He loved Daniel like a brother, a best friend. Losing him had nearly broken the older man, so having Daniel here, and the bonus of a wife that he loved like a daughter never failed to warm the crabby old Generals heart. He looked forward to the birth of Annie’s little girl, and their whole 'family' had closed ranks around Annie.

   Daniel froze in the middle of the hallway, his blue eyes glazed over under his glasses, and Jack snickered.

  "What is it this time?" Jack laughed. Annie had a habit of just stopping Daniel in his tracks to speak to his mind, usually for one of her strange cravings.

  Daniel blushed furiously.

  "Ummmm.....can I leave....early......?" Daniel bit his lip and held his folders in his lap.

  Jacks response was embarrassingly loud laughter.

  For her part, Annie lay in their bed, her only garment a long thin strapped satin nightgown. More a slip really, since it barely reached her knees. Ever since returning home, she realized she loved the feel of satin, and it was probably due to another strange craving her body was having.

  Annie was completely out of her element. She had no idea what she was doing. She'd taken to wearing long t-shirts and pregnancy jeans. Gone were her corset days, that’s for sure. The last real mental breakdown four months ago had severely weakened her physically, so she had curtailed her life. Not that she didn't get her revenge. Nothing like bugging her husband while he was at work for ice cream or Taco Bell....or sex. She loved sex. Well, that part wasn't new, but god, she wanted it all the time now. It had gotten so bad, Daniel stopped wearing underwear. He said what the point was; he spent more time out of them than IN them.

  Letting her mind drift, she checked on all her friends. She made sure Sam was okay, scanning her best female friends mind. She wasn't too invasive. She just liked to make sure that she wasn't needed. She would've checked on her Jaffa friend Teal'c too, but his tretonin use kept their minds from being able to reach each other. They meditated a lot together. Teal'c came over frequently to help center Annie’s body and mind, saying it would help her with the strain of her pregnancy. She was grateful, she was scared, but Teal'cs pillar of strength was a great comfort. She knew he babied her as much as Jack did, but she didn't mind.

  Her family was what it was, and after a lifetime of being alone, that feeling and Daniels love wasn't something she was shaking sticks at. No sir. No peeking in the mouths of gift horses. Grandma Lorraine and her mother Katerine would've whole heartedly agreed. Italian superstition and old wives tales they may be, but Annie had never seen evidence that they were off the mark.

    She looked in on Jack. Sweet, caring, snarky old soldier. When he'd been locked in that block of ice in Antarctica, she'd been inconsolable. She'd seen the older man as a replacement for her lost father St. John, and felt surrounded by paternal love for the first time since she was four. When he'd returned, she'd climbed her six foot pregnant ass into his lap and cried for hours. Only his comfort and his begging her to calm down so she didn't cause further damage to his grandbaby had calmed her. He was listed as next of kin for all three of them, and knew Daniel trusted Jack enough to care for his family should anything happen to him. Jack was at their home frequently, whenever he could get away. They played chess and talked. She'd introduced Jack to Foamy cartoons on her laptop, and they spent hours snorting in laughter, cuddled on the couch together when Daniel was either at work, or working in his office. He stayed for dinner, TV, and drinks, and their spare room was suited for Jacks needs. He spent many a night in the Jackson home. Partly for them, and partly to stave off his own loneliness. He needed them as much as they needed him, and neither Annie nor Daniel would have it any other way.  They had become very close. Between him and her husband, Annie felt she and her baby were safe.

  She and Jack were even close enough for her to talk in his mind if she had to, but it creeped him out, so she didn't. But that didn't stop her from giving his mind little strokes of assurance and peace. She was banned from the mountain on his orders until after the baby was born. The danger was just too great for anyone to take risks with. But that meant being alone a lot of the day, and she missed Daniel horribly. She cl0sed her eyes and listened to her old Staind CD. "So Far Away" was playing. She knew how poor Aaron was feeling. Sighing, she was sinking back into a deeper sleep when her mind caught the wave.

   She suddenly smiled. Daniel. He was close. Really close. She opened her sleepy eyes and caught sight of the love of her life in the doorway. Oh my. He was leaning in the doorway in his civvies. Tight washed-out jeans, a snug blue-gray t-shirt and his leather jacket. He pulled off his glasses, and she caught sight of a pair of magnificently expressive blue eyes. He raised his eyebrows, and toed off his shoes. She turned over, and stared. Her whole being sat up and begged. Yes! Please! Can we have some? Her hormones cheered.

   "Did you order something love?" Daniel asked rhetorically. Annie turned over, her braided bangs clicking. The rest just floated on a black waterfall over the pillows. She looked like sin (If an already committed one, after all, she WAS knocked up), her strap falling off one shoulder, the blue sheets tangled. Her laptop was on the nightstand, books on the floor, the remote to the stereo next to her hand, where he could see the winking of her wedding ring. She pressed the button, and all of a sudden Prince was singing "Gett Off". He smirked.

   "That's funny Annie. I was in the middle of an important meeting!" Annie snorted.

   "You were talking with Jack in the hallway Daniel." She deadpanned, putting her hand over her tummy. His eyes strayed to her body.

   "Besides, look at you, you’re already preparing yourself." Daniel couldn't deny it. In about ten seconds, he was going to be engaging in the very activity that brought about the craving in the first place.

                        ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  An hour later, Daniel was in the kitchen, preparing a fruit salad (No strawberries, no green melon, and no seeds in the watermelon if you please), and doing so naked. He was freshly showered, and had left his wife sated and watching a DVD in the nest of blue satin. They would eat there when he was finished.
   *Are you wearing the apron darling?* He heard in his head. Annie had bought him a "Fuck the Cook" apron as a gag gift a few months ago, and he'd made the mistake of opening it in front of Jack, who'd howled with laughter and insisting on borrowing it for his next picnic.
   Daniel blushed and hissed inside his head, only to hear her snorting laughter from the bedroom.
   "ANNIE!" He admonished, which only served to upgrade her laughter into full blown belly laughs. He shook his head. Leave it to him to marry a woman with a sense of humor more warped than Jacks.
  Now he wondered how he could keep his Valentine gift a secret from his telepathic wife. Then he remembered her saying to him a few months ago that if he wanted to get a gift, all he had to do was internally label it as a surprise, and she wouldn't ruin it. So he filed away his knowledge of their upcoming vacation under "surprise" and hope she got the message.
  Later that night, Jack had shown up per usual Friday night fare. They had pizza and talked. The living room, with its big TV and DVD player over the fireplace, it made for a very deeply nested experience. Lit candles burned and incense made the entire place smell of a Cairo night. Annie had found the unique sticks on one of her many trips to the local flea market.
   "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" was on. Annie ended up asleep on Jacks lap on the couch. He normally sat on his recliner, but it was being fixed, so he sat in the corner of the couch. In the end, he and Daniel had both smiled on seeing the cute display. Annie was wrapped in a comfortable fleece blanket, and had curled up in a ball, looking like a little girl. Jack brushed her black hair from her face and smoothed her forehead. She wriggled like a cat and put one hand over her child.
  *Jack* Annie mumbled in his head unaware. The sound was very childlike. Like a little girl saying 'Daddy'.  He gasped and Daniel looked up from his computer, where he was booking tickets and hotel reservations.
   "What is it?" He asked, "Do you want me to take her?"
   "No Danny, she just mumbled in my head. I don't think she meant to do it. She's fine. I used to sit this way with Charlie. Course that's a far cry from a six foot pregnant telepath." Jack laughed quietly. Daniel joined him.
   The general of the most secretive facility on the planet, the one that held its greatest asset, was reduced to a simple human being in the presence of this woman. No paperwork, no war, no snakes or nasty mechanical bugs. No gray walls. Here, in this house, was the freakish yet amusing combination of two people with no reason to be together, yet nothing could come between them. Jacks hair was now almost completely white, but he was just as spry and witty as he had been when they met. And every bit fit for battle. Yet he was also gentle and had certain soft spots. Two of the biggest ones lived in this very house. Three, if you counted the little life that was coming into being under the fingers of the little firebrand in his lap. As long as he had this, he'd never feel anything les than grateful. He'd lost too much in his life.
   Daniel was safe and alive, and the universe had seen fit to give them all the gift of this 'daughter' like figure. As Annie Jackson snuffled and moved her hand lovingly over her belly, and her husband winked at him from across the room, Jack O' Neill thought perhaps this was what it all meant. What they all fought for. Oma and all her glowy friends had it all wrong. Enlightenment and ascension weren't the ultimate goals. Life was. Rich glorious life. Jack laid his head on the back of the couch and let sleep claim him.
