What Comes Of Dreams Chapter 21 The
tunnel Daniel was following Chena through twisted back and forth more than the
Tok’ra tunnels. Daniel kept following
Chena through the twists and turns, and what seemed to be a steady downward slope. After what felt like hours of walking, Daniel
began to notice that there was a faint glow up ahead of them, a soft greenish
glow. Seeing Chena come to a halt a few
feet further down the tunnel, he watched as she dropped into a crouch and
seemed to be scanning the area of an enemy. Going
onto the defensive, Daniel dropped down to a crouch and sidled up next to
Chena. Whispering
where she would be able to hear, but nothing else he hoped; Daniel spoke. “Chena, what’s going on?” “We
are close to the source of the grok, but there is a creature that inhabits the
pool the grok comes from.” Chena
whispered in a low voice. “It has
attempted to grab me several times when I have come for more grok. I am trying to figure out if it is near the
bank or deep in the pool.” Nodding
his head, Daniel began to do his own sweep of the area beyond the tunnel. It looked like a small cavern with some kind
of pool taking up most of the interior floor area. The water of the pool was the same green as
the grok he had drunk, and it looked like moss growing near the grok was what
was giving off the light. Daniel
couldn’t help but think that Sam and Anise would be happy to get their hands on
some of that moss and the grok. Shaking
the sudden sadness that descended into this mind, Daniel pulled his thoughts
back to the situation at hand. He
watched as Chena stealthily crossed into the cavern interior, still on the
alert for this creature she said was in there.
Chena
was puzzled, she had noticed the sudden look of loss that had filtered across
Daniel’s face and eyes, a look she had seen in many humans before him, but she
did not know the cause for it in this instance.
Keeping her eyes and ears alert, Chena slowly approached the edge of the
pool and stopped; her muscles were all set to spring should the creature
appear. After
several seconds of not seeing any motion in the water, Chena motioned for
Daniel to approach. Gesturing with her
hands towards the water, Chena spoke in a near whisper. “The creature must sleep; there is not sign
of it. The grok is there, in the pool.” Nodding
with his head, Daniel took the water skins that Chena had given him earlier and
submerged them in the pool to fill them.
Daniel had just finished filling the second water skin and tying it shut
when something caused a huge explosion of liquid that caused waves to roll over
him and Chena. Loosing his footing,
Daniel fell onto his back to stare up at the creature that had sprung up in the
middle of the pool…it was a Goa’uld symbiote, but there was like ten feet of it
towering over the pool. Chena
tried to grab Daniel and drag him with her as he fell, but she was not fast
enough. The creature grabbed Daniel’s
foot with its maws and pulled him under the surface of the pool. She stared in disbelief and worry as the pool
turned into a churning maelstrom.
Unidentified pulses of light kept flashing from under the surface, and
occasionally the creature’s body would roll up out of the liquid and plunge
back into the depths. The
pool started to become tinged with red, Chena knowing that it must be Daniel’s
blood, but she knew not what to do to help him.
After what seemed like much time had passed, the liquid in the pool
became discolored with a large amount of blue stuff, more than there had been
red. After several seconds, Daniel broke
the surface gasping for breath. Chena
dove into the pool and swam out to grab Daniel and then bring him back to solid
ground. Hauling herself and then Daniel
out of the now bluish liquid, Chena dropped to the ground and looked at Daniel
with great worry. For
a long time, Daniel only laid on the side of the pool taking in great gulps of
air. Finally finding that he could
properly breathe again, Daniel reached behind his neck on impulse to make sure
that there was no entrance mark. Sighing
in relief, Daniel sat up and looked at the blue-green tinted liquid with
repulsion. Raising both arms, Daniel
fired off several blasts from the super-soldier weapons at the white body of
the now dead Goa’uld floating there. Chena
stared in amazement as Daniel finally sat up and then fired several blasts of
energy at the dead creature. As she
watched the body sink and the pool become even more tinted with blue, she
cautiously approached the pool to examine the grok. She was stopped before she even really got
moving by Daniel grabbing hold of her arm. “I
don’t think that it will be safe to drink that stuff anymore.” Daniel said
lifting his chin in the direction of the pool. Sure
enough, as Daniel and Chena watched, the moss that grew along the pools far
edge started turning brown and the light began to fade. Within minutes, the cavern was plunged into
complete darkness as the poison from the Goa’uld’s
blood killed the light emitting moss. “We
had better get out of here.” Daniel said
pulling on Chena’s arm for her to follow him. Pulling
his mini-light out of his vest pocket, Daniel turned it on and scanned the
cavern for the tunnel they had come through to get there. Finding the direction to go, Daniel slowly raised
himself up off the ground, wincing at the pain in his left ankle where the
creature had initially grabbed him. Chena,
seeing that Daniel was getting up and then hearing his gasp of pain, rushed to
his side to help him walk. Remembering
the bit of red that had bubbled up to the surface of the green pool, Chena
grabbed the mini-light from Daniel’s hand and dropped down to examine his
ankle. As she searched the ankle area
for any signs of something wrong, all she could find was where the black fabric
had been torn, but the skin beneath was without injury. Standing back up, she looked at Daniel with
bewilderment. Half-chuckling,
Daniel only shrugged. “It only hurt for
a brief second and then went away. I
guess it has already healed.” “Yes.” Chena responded nodding her head. “It must be because the grok was on your
skin.” Slowly,
Daniel and Chena made there way through the snaking tunnel back to the larger
cavern. End Chapter Twenty-One of This story along with all original characters and situations were created
