Chapter 24

By the time Daniel and Chena made it back to the main cavern, he had no lingering aches that had resulted from the fight with the giant Goa’uld symbiote.  Sitting down, Daniel examined the area on his leg he knew the creature had bit him and found that there as no mark of any kind.  Seeing that Chena was standing a little off from him, he turned to look at her.

“Chena, what is the matter?”  Daniel asked concerned.

Staring at Daniel, Chena was afraid that he had a symbiote in him and did not want to think of what she would have to do if that was the case.

“Chena is afraid that Daniel is no longer Daniel.”  Chena responded timidly.

Thinking about it for a minute, Daniel understood here fear.  “Chena, Unas can detect the Goa’uld can they not?”

Thinking through her memories and what she had felt in the past when a Goa’uld was near, Chena nodded in confirmation.

“Do you get that feeling when you are near me?”  Daniel asked in a hopeful voice.

Taking a few minutes to extend her senses while looking at Daniel, Chena shook her head no.

Sighing with relief, Daniel again addressed Chena, “Good, then why do you look so scarred around me?”

Before she could catch herself, Chena blurted out.  “Cause Chena wants you.”  Catching what she had said, Chena quickly ducked her head and turned away.

Thinking that Jack would have a field day if he had heard that, Daniel stood and walked over to where Chena was standing.  Grasping her shoulders gently, Daniel turned her to face him.  Seeing that she was keeping her head down, Daniel reached under her chin and guided it up so that her eyes met his.

“Chena, I am flattered that you find you have feelings for me.”  Daniel said in a mild voice.  “But I have those at home that my heart already belongs to.  I can not be with you and stay true to them.”

Knowing that that was what Daniel would say, Chena let the tears silently fall from her eyes.  “I have never known one like you, Daniel.  But, Chena knows that you are not like Chena, you are not Unas.”

“Being and Unas does have some to do with why we could not be together, but there is more than that.”  Daniel said in a saddened voice for her.  “Those that wait for me possess all the love that I have.  I could not think of loving another the way I love them.”

“Chena, what would you do if I can help to get you to where there are other Unas?”  Daniel asked with a sudden inspiration.  “Would you go there?”

Looking up with hope in her eyes, Chena nodded her head.  “To be where there is other like Chena, yes…Chena would go.”

“Is there a Stargate, a Chappa’ai, on this planet?” Daniel inquired.

“You mean the giant stone circle the bad people came through?”  Chena said puzzled.

            “Yes.”  Daniel responded

“It is a single day’s walk from here, near the village Chena grew up in.”  Chena replied with a frown.  “But that area is poisoned, none survive for more than a few hours in that bad air.”

Wishing that he had his MOP gear, Daniel stood brooding for several minutes before another thought came to him.  Running back into the room he first started in, Daniel grabbed up the Super Solder helmet and ran back over to Chena while examining the inside of the helmet.

Looking confused, Chena watched Daniel wondering what was wrong with him.

Seeing that the inside of the helmet where the mouth and nose area was did have some kind of filtration system built into it, Daniel got really exited.  Looking up at Chena, that excitement quickly abated.  He realized that one of these helmets would never fit her.

“Chena, does the poison around the stone circle affect you?”  Daniel asked with dwindling hope.

“Yes.”  Chena responded.  “But Chena is able to stay in it for long time without getting more than a little sick.  The sickness clears quickly if Chena leaves the area.”

“That is great, Chena.”  Daniel said getting as excited as a kid in a candy store.  “Then we can go to the circle and I can get you home with the other Unas.”

“No, Daniel.”  Chena said grabbing his arm.  “The air will make you sick and you will die.”

Shaking his head, Daniel calmed himself enough to talk.  “Chena, the helmet that the pale men wore has something in it that filters out the bad air.  With this and some of the grok I have with me, we should be able to make it.  How far from where the bad air starts to where the stone circle is?”

“Chena thinks it is about half-day’s walk.”  Chena said thinking.

“Do any of the bad men, the Goa’uld, go there anymore?”  Daniel asked hoping the answer was what he wanted.

“No, the air affects them too.”  Chena responded.

“Then let’s go.”  Daniel said as he started double-checking what he had in his vest…mostly verifying that he still had his GDO.  “Gather the things you want to take with you, I am going to take you to the planet that Chaka came from originally.

Feeling the excitement that was rolling off of Daniel in great waves, Chena ran into the room she used for sleeping and started gather stuff into her traveling bag.  Several minutes later, she emerged back into the cavern to find Daniel slipping the pale creature’s helmet on.  A moment of fear shout through her at seeing the nearly complete suite that belonged to those deadly warriors, but it quickly passed remembering that it was Daniel wearing it.

“Chena, can you hear me?”  Daniel asked speaking through the helmet’s mouth piece.

“Yes, Chena can hear you Daniel.”  Chena responded not liking the way his voice seemed oddly muffled.  It was not the soft voice she liked to hear.

“Good, then I will be able to wear it when we get close to the poisoned area and we can still talk.”  Daniel said as he took the helmet back off.

“Let’s go.”  Daniel said as he started heading for the way to the outside.  “I do not know how long the grok will be good and I need to get it home to my people so they can figure out if we synthesize it.”

Not knowing what Daniel meant to do with the grok, she understood that he was in a hurry.  “You take me to be with the other Unas?”

“Yes, Chena.”  Daniel said smiling.  “I am going to take you to Chaka’s original tribe where I first met him.”

“Chena gets to be with Chaka’s family?” Chena said with hope rising in her voice.

“If they are still there, you will be with Chaka’s family.”  Daniel said smiling.

With a sense of urgency taking over, Chena grabbed Daniel by the hand a pulled him through the tunnel that would lead to the surface.
