Chapter 33

After everyone sat down around the table, General Hammond stood up.  “Before anyone speaks, I want to see the feed from the gate room from the time we entered till the time we left.”

Walking over to a phone on the wall, General Grange called up to the control room techs and ordered the specified time frame from the gate room camera to be routed to the monitors in the conference room.  By the time Max had made it to his seat, the feed was starting to play.

After having watched through the feed three time, it not having lasted more than 3 minutes each time, the table sat stunned at what they had seen.  The only person not stunned was Daniel, who sat in his signature self-hug waiting for the punishment he was sure was to come.

“Well,” General Grange began, “I think the footage shows quite clearly that those six Marines started things and that Daniel Jackson and our Jaffa friends only defended themselves.”

Smiling at the avoidance of asking troublesome questions, General Hammond nodded at his counterpart.  “I do believe you are right Max.  I do hope that you will take care of those men appropriately?”

“Of course, George.”  General Grange responded in kind.  “I think you can safely bet they will be off this base before the night is on us.”

With that, General Grange exited the room with a purpose and a smile.  He had had issues with these Marines where other civilians workers were concerned…now he had the ammo to get rid of them.

“It was them, wasn’t it Daniel!”  Jack exclaimed as a buried memory came to the front of his mind.

Nodding his head ever so slightly, Daniel made no other sound.

“What are you talking about Colonel?” Sam asked now that there was something to actually quiz in front of her.

“General, do you remember back after Daniel first joined SG1 before we went to planet after Abydos?”  Jack asked his CO.

“Yeah, that time stands out rather prominently in my mind.  What is this about?”  General Hammond asked puzzled.

“Do you recall a Friday morning about two weeks before the mission when Daniel called in sick and asked for the weekend off?”  Jack continued getting a bit more upset.

“I recall that, I thought he had just overworked or something.”  General said as realization started to down on him.

“Daniel, those Marines out there are the reason that you took that weekend off weren’t they.”  Jack said with vehemence creeping into his voice.

Seeing the young Archeologist flinch at the tone of voice and pale at were probably memories, Sam took Daniel’s hands into her own and gently rubbed them until he looked up into her eyes.

“Daniel, did those guys hurt you or threaten you or something?”  Sam asked in a deeply concerned voice.

Speaking as if ashamed of the memory, Daniel nodded his head.  “I was coming back from a coffee run in the commissary when I was grabbed and pulled into a closet.  A blanket or something was thrown over me and then I was punched and kicked and hit with other things.”  Daniel began to sob.  “By the time that I came to, I was alone and bleeding and hurt all over.  When I got up to leave the room, I found a note on the door that told me that a military facility was not place for a geek like me.”

Sam pulled Daniel into his arms and gently rocked him back and forth.  Looking around the table she saw murder in Jack’s, Teal’c’s, Ishta’s, Chena’s and Er’ka’s eyes.  Only the twitching jaw muscle and his reddened face told her how General Hammond was feeling about the matter.  Slowly, Daniel gathered himself together and forged on.

“I cleaned myself up in one of the bathrooms and left the base.  Being as it was sometime in the early morning, the guards on duty did not pay much attention to the way I looked.  I drove home and took some pain medicines I had left over from the injuries I received on the Abydos mission the week prior.”  Daniel slowly stated trying to gain more control over him self.  “The following weeks and months, a few of the Marines on base would drop comments as they passed me in the corridors, I eventually figured out who they all were.”

“Why did you not tell us, son?”  General Hammond asked

“At the time, I did not want to cause any trouble…and I did not think anyone would really believe me against the word of six Marines.”  Daniel choked out.  “I also did not want Jack to tell me I was full of crap because I already knew how he felt about me because I was a scientist.”

Jack hung his head feeling a stab to his chest at what Daniel had said.  “I knew that something was wrong with you when you didn’t come out of my guest bedroom all weekend.  You should have told me, even if we did not get along and see eye-to-eye, you were still part of my team and nobody should have treated you like that.”

“I did not want to seem weak to anyone, Jack.  Even Sam was female and they did not mess with her.  How would it have looked if I went whining to you about allowing myself to be beat up?”  Daniel said with growing irritation.

Before anything more could be said from Jack, Teal’c broke into the conversation.  “What ever transpired in the past does not matter now.  DanielJackson proved to those that would do him harm that he is a formidable warrior.  Did he not take out three of those soldiers on his own, one of which was wielding a combat knife?”

“Yes he did.”  General Hammond said with some pride.  “I do not think that Jack could have done better himself.”

Smiling with a sense of pride, Jack looked like a bobble-head the way he kept nodding.  “Yes, you definitely showed them Daniel.  Of course, this is something we will have to talk about later…but right now, we need to get Chena to her people.”

As Daniel stood up, he looked directly into the eyes of his Jaffa friends that had helped him.  “Ishta, Er’ka, Teal’c…thanks for helping me out back there.”  Daniel said with deep gratitude.

“You have helped us in the past Doctor Jackson, we were honored to assist.”  Er’ka responded.

“We were merely limiting the physical injuries those three Marines would have received had we not intervened.”  Teal’c deadpanned.
