Sacrifice & Reward Chapter One As Major Carter came through the door to the infirmary to visit with Daniel and eat her lunch, she heard the erratic beeps of his heart monitor and saw him go into seizures. The world slowed down to a crawl as she watched a nurse run for Daniel's bed and come to a sliding halt next to him as he stopped convulsing and the heart monitor alarm sounded off. The tray in her hands clattered to the floor as once again, she watched in horror while Daniel died. Her eyes not moving from the still form of her friend, she sank to her knees as the sorrow engulfed her heart. So lost in this sudden onslaught of grief, Sam never noticed Janet's replacement working frantically to revive Daniel, her mind and eyes only saw the incident after Kelwona all over again. After what seemed an eternity, she slowly realized that the frantic movements around his bed had abated and the terribly screeching alarm was silent. Coming out of her daze, Sam stood and approached Daniel's bed with dread in her heart. Recognition finally caught up with her as her mind kicked in to notice that his head was not covered with a sheet, but had several tubes running into his mouth. She was stopped short of reaching the bed when an unfamiliar arm extended out to press against her shoulder. Looking away from the bed, she looked into the sympathetic eyes of one of the nurses. “Major Carter, ma'am, you can't go over to Dr. Jackson yet. We need to finish hooking him up to the life-support systems.” the diminutive nurse said with a compassionate voice. Shaking her head to try and get her mind working again, Sam started to speak, “Wh…What happened? He was fine just this morning?” “We do not know ma'am. Maybe you should ask Dr. Warner, I must continue getting this done.” the nurse replied with a shrug. “I will do that.” the Major said coming back to herself as she turned towards Janet's...er, Dr. Warner's office. Looking up from his desk and out the door, Dr. Warner caught site of Major Carter looking on at Dr. Jackson's bed. Putting his pen down, he eased himself up from his chair and made his way over to her. “He had a turn for the worse I am afraid. We do not know why it happened; everything was perfectly fine, except for him being unconscious. It is as if all of the energy in his body was suddenly drained away.” Dr. Warner said with a shrug. “We will have to keep him on life-support until he gains his strength back.” “Is there anything I can do?” Sam asked is a trembling voice. “I mean, I do not know much about medicine, but I may be...” Shaking his head, Dr. Warner briefly looked from her to the bed and back again. “The only thing we can do at the moment is wait and see what happens. Do you know if he has any kind of DNR or Living Will?” “I do not believe so; I mean we have never discussed it.” Sam said in almost a whisper. “I think that perhaps you should go get some rest, Major. I will let you know if anything changes.” Dr. Warner said with a low voice. Nodding her head, Sam turned around and headed out of the infirmary towards the elevators and her office. No sooner had she gotten into the hallway than she heard several people running down the hall. Looking up, she saw Colonel O'Neill and Teal'c come sliding to a stop in front of her with worried looks on their faces. Without even a second thought, Sam grabbed Jack around the shoulders and started sobbing into his chest. O'Neill slowly rubbed her back until she could get herself under control. “What happened to DanielJackson?” Teal'c asked in his normally stoic voice. Pulling herself together, Sam brought her head up from Jack's chest and stepped back to talk to him and Teal'c. “I was coming to visit with him during my lunch.” see started still sniffling. “Just when I entered the infirmary his heart monitor went erratic and then he started convulsing. It only lasted a few seconds and then he, he flat-lined. They have him hooked up to a life-support system now, but things are not looking good. I just don't understand it, he was only unconscious this morning.” Listening to what his 2IC had to say, Jack finally spoke up, “Does the Doc know what happened?” Shaking her head, Sam looked down at the floor to hide the welling tears. “He said it was if all of Daniel's energy was suddenly drained from his body, but he does not know why or how. He said that he would let me know if anything changed.” Nodding their heads, Jack and Teal'c each took up a flanking position and guided her towards the elevators. “Let's go to your lab and sit down for a few.” O'Neill said in a caring voice. “Indeed, I too feel that we should sit down for a while.” Teal'c stated. Sitting in her office with Teal'c and Jack, nobody said anything for a long time. As each person dealt with the emotions of this turn of events concerning their dear friend, they jumped when there was a knock on the door. Looking up from where she was sitting, Sam found that it was General Hammond standing in the doorway. Quickly jumping to her feet as was proper in the military, she straightened up and addressed her BCO. “Sir, what can I do for you?” “At ease Major, I just came by to see how all of you were doing. Dr. Warner called me at my office and told me what happened. I kind of figured that you would all be in here.” Gen. Hammond replied. “Yes sir, we were just all sitting here thinking about Daniel...” she said with her voice trailing off. “I understand Major, this is a difficult time. Why don't SG1 take a couple of days off and get some rest. I know that none of you will probably be able to do much other than worry about Dr. Jackson.” Gen. Hammond said with concern in his voice as he looked at each of the remaining members of his flag-ship team. “Don't make me have to make it an order.” Standing to his feet, Jack walked over to his CO and shook his hand. “Thank you sir, I believe you are right. I am going to just go check on Danny if you do not mind.” “Not at all Colonel, just don't get in the way of Dr. Warner's medical staff.” the General said with a slight smile. “I won't sir.” O'Neill said has he looked back over his shoulder before stepping through the door. “I think that I too will check on DanielJackson before I return to my room to meditate.” Teal'c stated as he bowed his head briefly to General Hammond before exiting the room. Nodding his head in acknowledgement, George Hammond watched as Major Carter sat down heavily in the chair in front of her computer. “Colonel, I would suggest that you get some rest. You seem to be quite worn out and I understand that you saw what happened with Dr. Jackson this afternoon.” “Yes sir, I was going to visit with him when he, he ...” Sam began crying. Not knowing what else to do, Gen. Hammond turned around and left the crying Major in her lab. End Chapter One of This story along with all original characters and situations were created
