Chapter Three

Entering the conference room, Sam was not at all surprised to find that everyone had already made it there. Setting the Tok’ra safe down on the table, she took note that everyone’s eyes kept looking from her to the box.

“I was sitting in my office after Gen. Hammond left and my computer beeped at me when an email arrived. When I opened it, I found this message.” Sam stated in a voice heavy with emotion as she handed the print-out to Gen. Hammond first.

“I guess we should have expected that Dr. Jackson would have found some way to deal with things with his penchant for getting into situations.” General Hammond said with a bit of incredibility as he handed the email over to O’Neill.

After the letter had made its way around the table so that everyone had a chance to look at it, everyone’s eyes drifted to the box in the center of the table and just lingered there. Everyone in the room had the same look on their face, a mixture of dread and surprise. It was Jack that first spoke, “So Carter, what is in the box?”

Shrugging her shoulders, Sam kept looking at the box as she spoke, “I do not know sir, I only retrieved it and brought it straight here. From what I can tell, there is no display of any sort, nor are any of the kinds of locks we normally associate with a personal safe of that size. The only thing I do know for certain is that all of the writing on it is stargate glyphs. I believe that they are the actual buttons to unlock it.”

“So, let’s open it up and see what Danny left us.” Jack said smirking.

“I wanted to wait till we were all together as Daniel asked, and so that we could figure out the combination to open it. His email did not exactly spell out the code to use, sir.” Sam said while taking a seat.

“Well hell, most of the places we went we found some kind of life.” Jack huffed. “Leave it to Danny-boy to be so obtuse.”

“I do not believe DanielJackson would be referring to missions, but to his personal views.” Teal’c said in his normal, unreadable features. “I know that he often told me of how Abydos was where he was at his happiest until Sha’re was taken from him.”

“You are probably right Teal’c, but what if that is not what he meant? What will happen to the contents if the wrong code is entered?” Sam questioned.

“From what the email stated, the safe is of Tok’ra design. Why don’t one of you contact them before we attempt anything to make sure that nothing will be harmed by entering the wrong combination before we attempt anything.” General Hammond ordered. “Once that has been cleared up, we can meet again and proceed with this.”

“Yes sir, General.” Colonel O’Neill replied while nodding his head. “Major, why don’t you get Walter to get you in contact with them as soon as possible? I am anxious to find out what we have in store for us…I hate just waiting.”

“Yes sir, Colonel. It should hopefully only take a few minutes to contact them and find out what we need to know.” Sam said with eyes darting from Jack to the box.

“After you have gotten the answers we need, we will reconvene in here. Until then, you are all dismissed.” George Hammond stated as he stood.

Following his lead, everyone left the conference room while Sam went into the control room to talk with Walter and call the Tok’ra.

Entering the control room, Sam tapped MSgt. Walter Harriman on the shoulder and gave him a slight smile. “Walter, would you mind sending a signal to the Tok’ra letting them know that we need to speak with them?” Sam asked.

“Yes ma’am, it will only take a few minutes.” Walter replied while typing on his keyboard. “I like using the communication system given to us by the Asgard, it beats having to open the Stargate every time we have to call them or one of our other allies.” He said smiling.

Not even three minutes later, Walter read his computer screen to see that the Tok’ra had responded and were requesting visual communication. “Major Carter, we have a response already and they want to establish video.” Harriman said while turning around to look at Sam.

Taking a seat next to Walter, Sam nodded her head in acknowledgement to activate the appropriate systems. Looking at the screen, Sam couldn’t hide her smile when she saw that it was her dad on the other side. “Hi dad, how are things with you?”

“Hey Sammy, things are not bad. Actually, they are rather calm for a change here.” Jacob Carter replied. “Is there something wrong, it is unusual for you to just place a personal call?” he asked taking in the look of anguish on her face.

“It is Daniel dad, something happened to him on the last mission he went on and he has been in a comma for the past six months. This morning, he flat-lined and they had to put him on life-support. While I was in my office, I received an email from him that asked me to retrieve a safe from his desk. The safe is of Tok’ra design and we need some help with it.” Sam said in a rush of air. “What happens if we input the wrong combination?”

“I use one of those safes myself, Samantha. You get three chances to input the correct code, after that, the contents and the same itself are destroyed, much like three blasts from a zat. If you are touching it at the time of the self-destruct, you can be harmed as well.” Selmak responded as he took over the conversation.

“Is there anything we can do to help Dr. Jackson?” Selmak asked.

“At the moment, the doctor here is unsure what has caused him to be in need of life-support all of a sudden. He had been fine without it, and then he started convulsing and went into cardiac arrest. Dr. Warner says that it is as if something drained him of all his life energy.” Sam said as tears started forming in her eyes.

“There is nothing that Selmak, or I, are needed for here, give us a little bit and we will be there. I will bring my healing device to see if it may help. Don’t worry, Sammy, we will do what we can to help you and Daniel.” Jacob replied fighting back his own heart-ache at what Sam was going through. “We should not be more than an hour at the most.”

With the last statement being made, communications were terminated and Sam sat staring at the now blank screen for several minutes. Making her way back to the conference room, Sam sat down in the chair she had been in only a short time before.

“Dad said that he and Selmak should be here within an hour or less. He said that they will bring a healing device and see if it can help.”

Nodding his head, General Hammond did not make any other movement or say anything else. It seemed that everyone else was in the same state of mind, just waiting and hoping that everything turned out for the best.
