Sacrifice & Reward Chapter Eight Upon entering the control room, Sam was not surprised to see the rest of SG1 and the Tok’ra already there. She had no more than gotten up the stairs when General Hammond came in from the direction of his office and asked who’s ID? Looking at his screen, MSgt. Harriman could not seem to get the words out. “Well son, who is it?” George asked with a bit of puzzlement in his voice. “Sir, it is the ID code for Dr. Jackson, but it is one from many years ago.” Walter replied. “Keep the iris closed Sergeant.” the General ordered. Moving his hand away from the iris control pad, Walter kept looking back from the StarGate to those gathered in the room. “It is probably a Gould trick to gain entrance.” Teal’c stated. “They are probably aware, from the Jaffa that escaped that mission, what has come of DanielJackson.” “I agree sir, we should just let the gate disengage and return to the conference room since we are already gathered down here.” Jack offered. As everyone was looking at one another and talking, it went unnoticed that the iris started opening on it own. It was not until the radiation alarms went off that everyone spun around to look at the gate. Quickly dashing over to one of the consoles, Sam took a quick analysis of the radiation readings. Before she could even comprehend what she actually read, she uttered a single phrase … “Holy Hannah!” Just as everyone heard this statement, the gate rippled and out stepped Dr. Nicholas Ballard Jackson looking just as he had when everyone had last seen him. In his hands he held the crystal skull that had once rendered Daniel invisible to everyone. No sooner had he stepped onto the ramp that the gate disengaged and the radiation levels returned to zero. Looking up into the stunned and confused faces of those in the control room, it was Dr. Jackson that spoke first. “Where is my grandson?” Nick shouted. “Where is Daniel?” The demand seemed to have jumpstarted the minds of everyone in the control room as they all gathered their wits and scrambled down the stairs. Skidding to a halt a few feet in front of Nicholas Jackson, it was Jack that found his voice before the others. “Stand down!” he shouted to the Marines on guard in the gate room. As if this was the barrier that stopped time, a collective sigh was heard from all of the people through out the room…including Nick himself. “Dr. Jackson?” General Hammond inquired of the long forgotten man standing in front of him. “General Hammond, right?” Nicholas said with a smile. “I am glad that you remember me. Sorry for dropping in a having your door unlocked for you, but I was time was of the essence where my grandson is concerned.” “How did you come by this knowledge?” Teal’c inquired. “Only those present in this facility are aware of the current condition of DanielJackson.” “Ah, but you are not the only ones that do know.” Nicholas Jackson said with glee. “What goes on with my grandson is of much talk in the universe, especially amongst the other planes. For example, I know that he has died and come back several times over the years. The most recent time he really shook up those with true power.” “You mean Dannyboy has a fan club, sweet!” Jack cracked. “Why will they not help him, if he is so popular?” “Because he demanded them to leave him alone.” Nicholas said point-blank. “Can we continue this conversation sitting down, my legs are not what they once were?” “Let us all adjourn to the conference room.” General Carter stated while staring at the elder Jackson. “That would be a good idea, Jacob. Right this way.” General Hammond said while motioning towards the door with his hands. “I thought you said time was of the essence for Daniel?” Freya asked just as everyone started to move out the door. “Should we not be going directly to his room?” “He is not in any immediate danger my dear.” Nick said with a compassionate voice and knowing smile. “I have been assured that his is safe for the time being. There is information that I must pass to you all before I venture to see my grandson.” With that being said, Nicholas Jackson turned and continued following Jacob Carter and General Hammond towards the stairs that went to the conference room. After everyone had reached the conference room, Nicholas took his seat and sat the crystal skull down in front of him. As everyone else was sitting down, Nick cleared his throat. “May I have a bit of coffee?” Nick asked. “It has been a very long time since I have been able to indulge.” Nick stated. “Sure, how do you like it?” Sam asked as she got up and stepped over to the coffee maker in the corner of the room. “Black would be just fine my dear.” Nick answered Sam. “Just the way Dan…Daniel likes his.” Sam replied with an emotional voice and trembling hands. Everyone in the room saw the emotion flitter across Sam’s face and not one of them could blame her. The words Nick and Sam had spoken elicited the same feelings in each of them. They all just sat without saying a word as Sam gave the cup of straight, black coffee to the grandfather of Daniel Jackson. After he had taken several sips and savored the rich brew, Nicholas looked at everyone around the table and inclined his head towards General Hammond. “Where should I begin?” Nick asked with a softened voice. “How about Danny’s fan club and why they will not help him?” Jack said with a bit of irritation. “Ah, Colonel O’Neill, I was told that you would respond like this, but you are right…that is as good a place as any to start.” Nick replied with a chuckle. Taking a moment to touch the crystal skull in front of him, Nick took a long sip of his coffee before he began.
