Sacrifice & Reward Chapter Nine “Daniel has been watched all of his life, by those that exist on multiple planes of existence.” Nicholas began. “Because of the gentleness of this soul, he was chosen at birth to become a Champion for good. It is because of this that other beings have conspired to thwart his becoming by manipulating events they figured would either corrupt or destroy his very nature.” Holding up his had to forestall questions or interruptions; Nick took another savoring sip of his coffee before he continued. “All of their attempts only catalyzed Daniel’s being; making him more staunch in doing what was good and right. When he really came into focus to the other planes was when he ascended with the help of Oma Desala. For that year he was with them, Daniel continued to try and find ways to help those on this plane. This got him into quite a bit of trouble I tell you, but…he would not back down and continued to challenge the rules of not interfering.” Nick beamed with pride. “He was so willful and pig-headed that those above Oma’s plane returned him to mortality as per his request, the alternative was his complete destruction. They could not tolerate his constantly challenging them to step in and do what was within their power to save innocent lives.” “After he descended and his memories were restored, the others watched with fascination as he repeatedly put his life on the line for strangers and friends alike.” Nick said smiling as he briefly looked at Jack, Sam, and Teal’c. “You can not imagine how shameful it makes me feel to know that I did not take him in as I should have done all of those years ago. But I digress. Following the events where he helped a formerly ascended to re-ascend and then ascending and descending on his, after he was killed by those pesky replicators, the “others” granted him the power to both destroy and to make whole.” Another short pause ensued wherein Nicholas took several long sips of his coffee. He looked out over those gathered around the table and noted the looks of shock, awe, bewilderment, pride, and love that filtered across the faces of the friends and colleagues of his grandson. “Well, at the last mission Daniel went on, he used that power and a great deal of his own personal life-energy to destroy the evil that was going to destroy those he clearly loves.” Nick said as he nodded at the members of SG1. “Of course, he did not have to use his personal energies, but he did not remember that at the time.” Nick said with consternation. “It is expending so much energy of his own that put him into his coma so many months ago. What was not known by anyone was that while he was in his coma state, he was unable to draw energy from the universe to replenish. Add to that, Daniel’s own guilt over having had lost, Janet Frasier I believe was her name, and having just killed so many the way he had. Daniel did not want to wake up.” “Even after all of these years, Dannyboy still hates to take a life if there can be any other choice.” Jack whispered shaking his head. “That is one of the reasons he was given the gift, young man.” Nick stated with conviction. “It is also one of the reasons why he demanded the power to be removed.” “He what?” echoed off the walls as those around the table shouted in unison. “Daniel demanded that Oma take the power back, but when she told him that is was beyond her…he demanded an audience with those that gave it to him. Sometimes my grandson can be so insular.” Nicholas said smirking. “The ones that gave him the power tried to persuade him to keep it, but he was afraid of the images of his corruption that Shiffu had shown him years before. Daniel also knew that those he loved would be forever targeted in order to stop him. He could not and would not risk anyone other than himself, especially his dearest friends.” Nicholas took a moment to look into the faces of those that Daniel gave up so much for and could not miss that none of them were able to keep guard of their emotions. Even the always, stoic Jaffa warrior was experiencing a moistening of the eyes. It filled Nick with a deep sense of pride to know that his grandson was so dearly regarded by so many. “To continue, when the power was taken back from him, the “others” did not realize how much of his own energies Daniel had depleted. Alas, it was too late as he had demanded to be left alone furthermore.” Nicholas stopped to wipe stray tears from his eyes. “So, that is where we find ourselves now.” Nick finished gesturing a shrug with his hands. “How did you come across all of this information Dr. Jackson?” General Hammond inquired. “The last we heard of you was more than 6 years ago when you stayed behind on that planet with the giant entities.” “To answer your question, it is they that told me everything I now know. They have kept up to date through their own means and only told me what I needed to know when I needed to know it.” Nicholas responded. “Now, I was also told that you all were preparing to open the safe that my son left should he “pass away” again. I know that it is the opinion of many of you that the password to open it is the symbols that spell out “Abydos”. That is incorrect.” Nick said with a flourish. “To enter that code would destroy the contents as I was informed. There is actually only one symbol that need be pushed, the one that represents “Earth”. This information was passed on because it is imperative that his will be followed as it will have far reaching implications.” End Chapter Nine of This story along with all original characters and situations were created
