Chapter Nineteen

Everyone stood staring at the monitor as nurses swarmed in and started checking over Daniel’s connections and equipment. One of the nursed jumped up on the bed and started chest compressions to try and get his heart started again. Dr. Warner came rushing in and immediately grabbed the crash cart. Yelling at a nurse to charge to 200, the doctor ripped open the hospital shirt Daniel was wearing and applied the paddles to his chest.

“Clear!” Dr. Warner shouted as he activated the paddles, sending current racing through Daniel’s body. Daniel’s body arched up off the bed, but the tone on the monitor stayed the same.

“Charge to 300.” Warner called out as he again placed the paddles on Daniel’s exposed chest. “Clear!”

Again, the life giving current was zapped into Daniel’s body and again his body arched up off the bed; the tone stayed exactly the same.

“Charge to 400!” Warner yelled as he placed the paddles back in the same place they had been before. Daniel’s body arched up off the bed again as the current surged into his body but did not respond otherwise.

“Epinephrine!” Dr. Warner shouted as he held out his hand. One of the nurses near the crash cart grabbed one of the large needles of medicine from a tray and handed it to him. Yanking the cap off the needle with his teeth, the doctor rammed the needle through Daniel’s chest bone and into his heart. Pushing the plunger of the needle down at a steady pace, the entire hypodermic was emptied.

Watching the heart monitor for any signs of change, the doctor bowed his head when nothing happened. “I am calling it.” Dr. Warner said as he turned to look at General Hammond.

The General nodded to the doctor and proceeded to leave the room. Major Carter collapsed to the ground in grief and immediately found her self being surrounded by the arms of Colonel O’Neill. Anise/Freya collapsed crying into the arms of Jacob/Selmak at exactly the same moment that Sam collapsed. Teal’c bowed silently as everyone witnessed a sheet being draped over Daniel’s head. The only person that moved otherwise was Nicholas Jackson, who slowly approached the lifeless form of his grandson.

Grabbing the sheet that was covering his grandson’s body, Nicholas ripped it back revealing Daniel’s bare chest. Placing the crystal skull down over Daniel’s heart, Nick bowed his head with one hand still on the skull. In a language unknown to the others, Nick began chanting in a solemn voice. Within seconds, the skull began to glow and radiation alarms started sounding. Sam and Freya/Anise both spun around to look at the bed where a reddish light was spreading outwards from the skull that was touching both Nicholas and Daniel.

In the blink of an eye, a single entity double the size of a human appeared in the room. To those that had seen the giants on that planet so long ago, this looked like a miniature version. The entity looked only at Nicholas, but everyone heard what it thought.

“You have made your decision old friend?” the entity asked Nicholas.

“I have.” Nicholas spoke out loud in the language he had been chanting in, though everyone understood what he said.

“You will now say the words that will transfer your life power to your grandson. In doing so, your body will cease to exist and you will join us forever more.” the entity telepathed to everyone in the room.

Taking a quick moment to reach into his breast pocket with his free hand, Nicholas took out and envelope and placed it next to the skull. Everyone watched in rapt fascination and awe as he bent down and kissed Daniel on the brow before standing straight again.

Nick then uttered a single word in the strange language, which caused the light being emitted by the crystal skull to flare in intensity. Just as quickly as the light flared, it was gone again…so was the skull, the entity, and Nicholas Ballard Jackson.

Everyone stood staring at where Nick had been when a single, slow beep started up on the heart monitor, followed by another. In a few short seconds, Daniel’s heart rhythm was restored to near normal. Both Sam and Anise/Freya ran over to the head of Daniel’s bed and felt his face; he was warm to the touch. Tears of joy were spilling down both of their faces as they turned to look at the others. Standing in the doorway were General Hammond and Dr. Warner who both could be seen with the traces of tears on their faces.

Jack let out a loud whoop as he took in the fact that his best friend had just once again been saved from the clutches of death.

Walking over to Daniel’s bed, Teal’c picked up the letter, which was still lying on his chest and read the words neatly printed on the front:

To: The Friends of My Grandson

Open this letter upon my having departed.

Tearing the envelope open, Teal’c scanned the page quickly and ran to the phone. “MSgt. Harriman, contact Thor and have him get the Nox here as soon as possible.” Teal’c ordered.

“Yes sir.” MSgt. Harriman responded without question.

“Teal’c?” General Hammond asked of the usually quiet giant.

“General, this letter from Nicholas Jackson states that he only had enough life to transfer to DanielJackson to bring him back from the brink of death.” Teal’c stated. “The letter says that it will take the Nox to restore Daniel Jackson to full health and that it will take many giving as one to accomplish this.”

Teal’c had just finished responding to Hammond when the facility Klaxons went off. “Unscheduled off-world activation.” MSgt. Harriman announced. “Nox IDC! What the…”

Everyone’s attention was drawn away from what the MSgt. had been saying to see Leya and Nafrayu of the Nox appear in the room by Asgard transporter, with them was Thor.

“I took the liberty of transferring the Nox from the gate room to here to save time.” Thor offered as explanation.

Not even looking at the others, Leya approached the bed where Daniel still lay unconscious.
