Prologue

“Oma, Oma please help me!” Daniel screamed into the expanse of space within his own mind. “Oma, I really need you! Please answer me!”

In a flash of light, Daniel found himself standing in the middle of a grassy null. He slowly turned around as he felt the gentle touch of his ex-mentor on his shoulder.

“What is wrong Daniel, why do you sound so panicked?” Oma enquired of him with sympathetic eyes.

“Oma, I want you to take this power from me. I do not want to become what this power can do. I want to be just myself.” Daniel beseeched of her.

“Daniel, you have been given a great gift. Why would you want it to be taken away when much good can become of it?” Oma responded.

“How many have we seen that have this kind of power and turn to use it for evil instead of good? I do not want this. You must take it from me.” Daniel yelled.

“I can not, Daniel, for it is not within my power to remove this from you.” Oma stated looking down towards her feet.

“Who, then, the “Others”? Then take me to them or call them here. I will demand that they take this from me!” Daniel said with fire burning within his eyes.

“If that is what you desire, then I will contact them and see what they feel.” Oma said as she faded from view.

Not knowing how long it would till she returned, Daniel slowly slumped to the ground pulling his knees to his chest and wrapping his arms protectively around himself. He had emotions running through him at the speed of thought, one moment he was near tears and the next he was ready to lash out at everything and everyone. How could his life have come to this? First he lost his parents, found Sha're, lost Sha're, found Sha're again, lost her again, found Sarah, lost Sarah, found Sha're and Sarah, walked away from them both, found Janet, and lost Janet. Somewhere in that mix he had died, ascended, descended, and now this. He was so tired, he just wanted to be left alone and not become the cause of anyone else to coming to harm. Everyone in his life has/had either been injured, killed, tortured, or other inexplicable things happen to them because of their association with him. He had killed, lied, deceived, and so many other terrible things in the last few years that he no longer knew who he was. How close to the line can he go before crossing over it and becoming like those he detests?

So lost in thought was he, that the appearance of 3 individuals passed unnoticed to him. It was not until he felt the coolness of shadow that he looked up. Standing in front of him where three “beings” dressed in white linen robes. Getting to his feet, Daniel glared at these individuals with barely controlled hostility.

“There is no need to be angry with us, Daniel, for we are not the ones who have done anything to harm you.” the one in the middle spoke. “Of these things that you dwell on, none of them have been your doing or caused because of you. Why do you blame yourself for things that are not under your control?”

“You should not seek to hide yourself away from those that care for you because of some misplaced notion that you are the cause of the things that have befallen others.” the one to his right stated. “These things are beyond your control and are not due to something you have done or not done.”

“You have been granted a gift to help where help is needed, why do you now seek to have it removed?” the being to the left asked. “Did you not see how it saved your friends when they were in trouble? Was this not what you even tried to do when you were amongst the Ascended, using your power to help those you cared for?”

Taking a calming breath, Daniel looked at the beings as he weighed what they said. “Yes, I tried to use my power as an Ascended to stop Anubis. You all stopped me then and allowed him to destroy a planet of those I cared greatly for. When I challenged the rules, I was cast out and left with no memory of who I was. It took time and the help of my friends to get my mind back. Then I fell in love with a wonderful woman, just to have her taken from me. Now, you say that you have all given me this gift to help those I care for. Well, it is too late! I am done! I do not want this power. I have done too much , seen too much and lost too much of myself to believe that I will not turn and use this power for other than what it is intended.”

“Daniel, you are a great soul, a wonderful heart that would not turn to evil with this power.” the individual in the middle said stepping forward. “We have watched you through everything you have done and seen that you only seek to help those in need and to stop those that harm. Oma has great faith that you will do wonderful things, which is why you have been granted these abilities.”

“Don't you get it?” Daniel bellowed. “I no longer wish to fight! I just want to do what I always intended to do, find the truth of the past as my parents did. I do not want power or anything like that. I have seen what power does; I have seen what comes of it. I have fought it, been touched by it, felt it inflict pain to me and others. I do not want it!”

“That is why we gave you this gift, because you have suffered through so much and yet you still seek to help while doing as little harm as you can.” the being to the right said looking into Daniel's eyes.

Seeing as this was getting him nowhere, Daniel had a thought come to him, “Can you guarantee that if I keep this power, those I care for will not get hurt because of it?” Noticing that the one to the left was about to speak up, Daniel raised his hand to stay their response. “You know as well as I that there will be those that will seek me out because of these, abilities. Can you promise that those I have left, that I care for, will come to no harm?”

All three beings where shaking there heads at this question; “No, we can not. For to be a Champion is a great honor and a great responsibility. There will be those that seek you out to destroy you. Those that you love are at risk because of this.”

“I will not be the cause of any more being hurt. What we do is too dangerous already to bring even more upon us. If I recover from what has happened to me, I am never stepping through the Stargate again! You will just have to find another Champion and take this gift away!” Daniel stated with conviction. “It is my right to refuse this is it not?”

“You are correct, it is your right. Be warned though, you will be left to your own measures and we will not help after this.” the being in the center said. “Once we remove the gift, it will be up to you and those that you care for to deal with alone.”

“Up till now, it has always been so has it not?” Daniel yelled. “We have done without help from “greater powers” and will continue to do so! All I want it to find peace at last.”

In the blink of an eye, the three being were gone. Shaking his head at their sudden departure, Daniel felt a sudden loss of strength as if his life energy had suddenly been drained from him and everything turned to blackness.
