Chapter Two

At 11:30 pm, Daniel walked into the apartment to find sitting on the couch and a packed bag near the door.

“You are breaking this off, aren’t you Janet?” Daniel said looking at the bag on the floor.

“Yes, not that I do not enjoy being with you Daniel, but this was not supposed to happen. I allowed myself to become to emotionally involved with you when I should not have. Janet said through silent tears. “It would be wrong of us to continue in a relationship that is not destined to last. I still hope that we can be friends, Daniel, but I will understand if you do not want to.” Janet said with imploring eyes.

Feeling as if his world had just been shattered once again, Daniel just stood there staring at Janet with pain-filled eyes. Janet watched Daniel for several minutes, and then shrugging, she walked over and picked her bag up from the ground.

“Wait Janet, I am sorry I did not say anything, this has just taken me by surprise.” Daniel said with a saddened voice. “We shall always be friends and I cherish the time we spent together.” With a shared hug, Janet walked out the door with tears falling down her cheeks.

Two beings watched the exchange and felt the impact of Daniel’s heartbreak as if it was there own.

“Will he ever find lasting happiness?” the younger being asked the older.

“Eventually he will, but he will suffer through much loneliness and emotional pain before then.” the older being replied to the younger.

In a state of numbness, Daniel stumbled over to the couch and sat down with a heavy thud. He had lost his best friends and teammates, he had lost past loves, and now he lost his most recent lover. In a sudden fit of anger, Daniel reached for one of the statuettes sitting on the coffee table and watched as a ribbon of white light that extended from his hand shattered it. With his hand still extended, Daniel looked from his hand and back to the pieces of statuette that were now scattered across the living room.

The two beings looked on in shock at what had just transpired.

“That…that…that should not have been possible,” the youngest being said, “that power was suppose to have been permanently removed!”

“Perhaps we all underestimated the capability of his mind to retain what we all thought was wiped clean,” the elder stated. “We must go and talk with the others to find out what shall be done.” Turning around and walking through the wall, the two beings returned to their own plane of existence.

For several moments Daniel only sat on the couch looking at what remained of the statuette he had been intending to smash and at his own hand. Reaching towards the broken pieces of the statuette thinking that he would now have to piece it back together, Daniel recalled on the image of how it looked whole and watched as the same white ribbon spread out to encompass each of the pieces. In a quick flash of light, all pieces were brought back together and the statuette looked as if it had never been broken. Looking up towards the ceiling, Daniel shouted out, “Oma…Oma I need to speak with you please.” In a softly glowing light, Oma DeSala faded into existence just in front of Daniel.

“What is it that bothers you so, Daniel?” Oma asked.

“How is it possible that I have the powers of the ascended, the power that can both destroy and heal?” Daniel nearly shouted.

“We are not sure,” Oma said with a puzzled look, “you should not be able to wield such powers as a mortal. All of that knowledge and ability was removed from you when you returned to this plane of existence. Be warned though, there are those that will seek to do you harm for having this ability. Also, do not use these powers, for they will drain your life energy and could possibly drain you to the point of death.”

“I shall heed your advice Oma,” Daniel replied, “I do not want these abilities, I would willingly trade them to get my friends back and to not be lonely anymore.”

Oma looked at Daniel with concern in her eyes and finally made up her mind, “All is not as you see or think, search your heart for the truth of things.” With that said, Oma faded back into the nothing. Wondering what that meant, Daniel sat back down on the couch and stared at the statuette that he had destroyed and then rebuilt. Questions were flying around in his mind and Daniel had no idea where to begin to find the answers. Without even realizing it, and with the toll on his energy the little “magic” he had performed, Daniel slipped into sleep.

When Daniel awoke from his slumber, he sat up on the couch and brushed his hand over his face. A quick glance at the clock told him that he had slept to early the next morning. Carefully, he picked up the statuette that had been the target of his anger earlier in the day and examined it with the keen eye of a trained archeologist. There was not a single crack or blemish on its onyx surface. Just as he was starting to get lost in thought, the phone started ringing. Getting up from the couch, Daniel padded over to the phone and picked it up off the receiver.

“Hello?” Daniel spoke into the handset.

“Dr. Jackson, this is General Hammond, there has been a mishap and we need you to come in.” General Hammond spoke into the phone on his end.

“Sir, is this urgent?” Daniel asked, “I am kind of in the middle of something.”

“Yes Dr. Jackson, this is very urgent. We need you here as soon as you can get here.” General Hammond replied.

“Alright, I should be there in about 20 minutes. I need to take a quick shower to wake up.” Daniel responded.

“That is fine. Report directly to my office when you get here.” General Hammond said.

Daniel hung up the phone and made his way to his room. Looking over at the bed with its sheets still all messed up and the tell-tell signs of lovemaking still upon it, Daniel shook his head and walked past it to his closet. Grabbing a fresh button-up and a pair of Dockers, Daniel headed to the bathroom. Looking around the bathroom as he pulled his clothing off, he could see no signs that Janet had ever stayed with him. Shaking the melancholy off that was starting to seep into him, Daniel quickly jumped into the shower and then got dressed. Heading to the front door, Daniel stopped by the bar to grab his keys when he saw that he had a message on the answering machine. Pressing the play button, Daniel heard Janet’s voice.

“Daniel, are you there? If you are, please pick up.” Janet spoke as if in tears. Daniel could feel his heart starting to clinch tight.

“I know that you are hurting and may not want to talk to me, but I wanted to tell you that I heading out on a mission and will probably not be back for a few days. When I get back, I would like for us to sit down and talk. I would like for us to still remain friends if you care to. I have to go now, but hope to speak with you when I get back.” Janet said just before the message ended.

Shaking his head, Daniel pressed the erase button and grabbed up his keys. Walking out the door, he had no idea how much more he was about to lose when he got to the mountain.
