Chapter Five

Planet Side …

Stepping through the gate onto the planet where he watched his friends get shot down, Daniel was filled with a both guilt and anger, guilt over having left his friends to suffer for so long at the hands of a Goa’uld, anger at having seen what that same Goa’uld had done because of a stupid scepter.

Everyone immediately went into defensive postures and started scanning the area for any Jaffa that may be in the area. After several minutes SG-12’s leader relaxed and signaled for the team to move out in the direction of the temple. Taking up the center position, Daniel found that he was acutely aware of everything around him, more so than he ever was in his life. He felt as if something that had been blocking his senses had been lifted and now everything seemed more vibrant and real to him.

As the group neared the cave that was the entrance to the temple area, Daniel glanced off towards the right of the cave entrance and froze where he stood. Only a few meters to the right of the cave opening stood a group of people that looked as if they belonged in Ancient Rome. There were men, women, and children of various ages standing in a huddle watching SG-12 and Daniel. What unnerved Daniel wasn’t the fact that the people were out of place for the time, but that they were all opaque. There were all ghosts.

When the leader of SG-12 noticed that Daniel had stopped moving and was starring off towards the right, he signaled the team to take up defensive positions while he went to find out what that problem was.

Dr. Jackson, is something wrong?” SG-12’s leader asked in a hushed voice.

Don’t you see them Major?” Daniel asked.

See who doctor?” the Major responded.

See them, all of those people.” Daniel said pointing towards the ghostly group.

Doctor, there is nobody there. Are you sure you are feeling all right?” the Major asked a little worried.

Grabbing the Major by the hand, Daniel again pointed towards the group of Ancient Roman ghosts. With a sudden start and his mouth dropping open, the Major saw the group that Daniel had been pointing towards.

How, who, what are they?” the Major gasped.

I think they are people that once lived on this planet.” Daniel stated as he started walking towards the ghosts.

What are you doing Dr. Jackson?” the Major asked as the ghosts faded from view with his release from Daniel’s grasp.

I am going to talk to them Major. They are there to tell us something.” Daniel called back as he walked.

Nearing the ghosts, the leader of the group walked up to Daniel and placed his hand on Daniel’s chest. A chill ran through Daniel’s body as he felt like something cold attached to him where the ghost had touched him.

You can see us?” the leader of the ghosts asked.

Yes, I can see you, and hear you?” Daniel replied with his eyebrows climbing into his hairline.

Have come to release us from this existence?” the leader asked of Daniel.

No, I have come to destroy Bellona for all of the evil she has done.” Daniel almost growled.

Then you have come to release us, for it is she that holds us to this place. It was she that destroyed us and it is her evil that keeps us from moving on.” the leader of the ghosts said with a smile. “When the time comes, we will do what we can to help you rid this world of her taint.

That would be helpful and appreciated.” Daniel said smiling back at the group.

With a nod, the ghosts walked past Daniel and through SG-12 as they passed through the entrance into the temple area. With a shiver, each member of SG-12 stood starring at Daniel as if he had just sprouted a second head from his shoulders.

What was that?” one of the young SG-12 members asked.

That was something I care not to explain nor to question.” the Major responded. “Somehow, the residents of this planet made themselves known. What did they tell you Dr. Jackson?

Walking back to the now standing members of SG-12, Daniel could still feel the icy touch of the dead on his chest. “They said that they will help us when the time is right in our fight against Bellona.” Daniel said smiling.

They are going to do what? How are they going to help us fight…they are dead?” the Major puzzled.

I do not know Major, but whatever they can do, it is a little more on our side.” Daniel said shrugging.

With a nod of understanding, if not a bit of confusion, the Major signaled for SG-12 to continue into the cave and into the temple.

In Space Aboard a Tok’ra Ship …

Marine-12 sat in the cargo bay of a Tok’ra ship waiting for the signal that it was time to board the Goa’uld An’Kesh to rescue their captured comrades. “Double-check your ammo and armor ladies, we do not want any mistakes with this op!” the Gunnery Sergeant in charge barked at the other squad members.

Yes sir!” the Marines of Marine-12 sounded off. With practiced precision and top-most training, each member of the squad went over their equipment again. They each knew what they were in for and what failure meant. If they could not rescue SG-1 and SG-10, they would ensure that they we no longer being tortured by the Goa’uld. They had their orders and they knew that there was only one shot at this.

A little while later, Jacob Carter walked into the cargo bay and signaled the Gunnery Sergeant that it was time. Marine-12 assembled on the ring pad, put on the armbands that would mask their presence, and watched as the rings descended down around them. In a flash of light they were gone from the Tok’ra ship and found themselves on a Goa’uld An’Kesh. Being familiar with the layout of Goa’uld craft from endless hours of training in a mockup, Marine-12 fanned out and started working their way from the cargo bay they ringed into towards the ladders that would take them up to the holding cells.

Being equipped with the best equipment available, Marine-12 moved like ghosts through the corridors. The padded and cushioned soles of their boots made neither sound, nor evidence of their passing. Nearing the hatch that would give them access to the ladder they needed to traverse upwards to three levels above them, Marine-12 came upon the first group of Jaffa they had yet to see on this mission. With practiced precision, the silenced P-90s they carried fired one round apiece and took out the Jaffa before they knew what was happening. Moving quickly, the marines fleeced their spent brass and stuffed the Jaffa’s bodies into a room across the hall from the hatch they needed to use. Climbing through the hatch and into the Jeffries tube, the last Marine in pulled the hatch cover back into place and used some specially made tack to hold it there.

Quickly climbing up the ladder, one by one the team made their way upwards towards the level that had the holding cells where their targets where located. Stopping at the hatch, the point man used an electronic peep scope to look out the grating to check for any enemies that may be near by. Not seeing anyone in the corridor, the point man quietly removed the hatch and the Marines filed out of the Jeffries tube into the corridor. Orienting themselves, the squad once again moved silently through the corridors towards the backside of the ship where the holding cells where located. As they neared their destination, the squad stopped as the point man once again used the electronic scope to peer around the corner towards the holding cells. Just outside the door that would let them into the hallway of cells, the Marine could see four Jaffa on guard detail.

Signaling the others, the point man waited while three other members of the squad worked their way up to him. With speed and accuracy, four marines rolled into the opening and opened fire on the unwary Jaffa. Before any of the Jaffa guards could even make a sound, metal penetrated their helmets and they were down for good. Making sure to leave no evidence, the Marines gathered their spent brass once more and pulled the dead Jaffa through the doorway into the holding cell area. While one Marine stood watch at the doorway, the other Marines searched the bodies of the Jaffa guards for the controller that would turn off the cell force fields.

As luck would have it, the first cell the Marines approached help Colonel O’Neil. Disabling the force field, the Gunnery Sergeant stepped into the cell and placed his hand over O’Neil’s mouth to keep him from crying out. Gently shaking him, O’Neil woke with a start and then calmed down when he realized that it was not the Jaffa back to beat him some more. Following the hand directions of the Gunnery Sergeant, O’Neil stood to his feet and accepted the zat that another of the Marines tossed to him. Handing an armband to O’Neil, the Gunnery Sergeant indicated that he should put it on and then sat another device on the ground in the cell. At the exact moment that O’Neil slipped on the armband, the Gunnery Sergeant activated the decoy device that mimicked the heartbeat and body temperature of a human. This process was repeated another six times until the last remaining cell was the one that held Dr. Frasier.

Upon reaching Dr. Frasier’s cell, the Gunnery Sergeant entered the cell and followed the same procedure he had for the others. This time though, he did not feel any signs of breath coming from either her nose or her mouth. Checking her pulse, he lowered his head in silent prayer for the loss of a patriot. Following his actions, the rest of Marine-12, SG-1, and SG-10 also lowered their heads in silent prayer. Walking up to the Gunnery Sergeant, Jack indicated for him to move away from her body. Looking back towards the others for a second and seeing them all nod their understanding, Jack knelt down, removed Janet’s dog tags, and then fired his zat three times into her body...disintegrating it completely.

Planet side …

Leading the way through the twists and turns of the cave, Daniel stepped through the passageway into the open courtyard of the temple. Right on his heels, the members of SG-12 took up defensive positions scanning for any possible enemies that may be around. After several tense moments, the Major gave the all clear and everyone once again followed Daniel into the temple proper.

As Daniel entered the main area of the temple, he could see that the ghosts had gathered around the black-stone slab that had been used to sacrifice their lives in prayer to Bellona. Approaching the only altar in the room, Daniel once again twisted the symbol that had opened the compartment where he had found the crystalline rod at so many months earlier. Placing the scepter into the compartment, Daniel stepped aside and allowed one of the other members of SG-12 to rig a naquada enriched explosive trap that would go off when the scepter was removed. Once the Airman was done, Daniel twisted the symbol back into place and watched as the compartment closed. With a nod, SG-12 headed back out of the temple towards the Stargate.
