Time & Time Again Prologue Daniel woke with a start. Sitting up in bed he was drenched in sweat and his heart was pounding in his chest. Trying not to wake the woman in his bed, Daniel slid out from under the covers and walked into the bathroom. Before turning on the light, he carefully closed the door and took a few deep breaths to get himself under control. Washing his face with some cold water and patting it dry, Daniel sat on the edge of the tub to think over the dream, no nightmare, that had woke him so. It had already been six months since he moved off base and into a one-bedroom apartment only a few miles away from, The Mountain. In that time he had been on only two missions, the last one ended up with him staying for a week in the infirmary while he recovered from a staff blast across the back. It was during this recovery time that the nightmare had started coming to him, and it came to him every night since. Rewind…two months back… What had been a normal mission to recon some ruins turned to be an all-out fight between two warring groups of Jaffa, each serving their Goa’uld masters. When he did not see his friends moving, his gut told him that they were dead and that he must get out of their to let the SGC know what the team had found out. He couldn’t help but blame himself for the death of his friends. If he hadn’t touched that stupid crystalline rod, he wouldn’t have been knocked unconscious…as usual. When he had awoken, the team had over-extended their pre-determined return time by a good four hours. It was during this four hours that the troops from two different Goa’uld had ringed down to battle one another for possession of this planet. The team was just helping Daniel up when the sounds of staff blasts started echoing back into the cave they were in, which was the only entrance into and out of the temple they had come here to investigate. “For crying out loud,” Jack bellowed, “couldn’t they have chosen another planet to have their little spat?” Shaking his head, Jack had led the team north away from the battlefield and back to towards the Stargate. They had just been within a few hundred feet when the gliders started diving at them and strafing the area. Jack had ordered Daniel to the DHD to get the gate open so they could make a “hot” exit. Having ducked behind the DHD after dialing the coordinates home, Daniel turned to provide cover fire, only to watch in horror as Jack, then Sam, and then Teal’c were shot down by blasts from the gliders overhead. Taking a last shot, Daniel dropped his P90 and ran up the steps to the gate. Just as he reached the top step, a Jaffa staff black hit him in the back and sent him through the gate. His last conscious action was to yell for the gate to be closed. When he awoke again, he had to report to General Hammond all that had been found out and all that had happened. With his heart in his throat, he had to report the death of his fellow teammates and friends. It was several days later when the SGC was assembled and a funeral was held for those he had spent the past seven years with, risking life and freedom time after time. Daniel was then wheeled back to the infirmary to once again be medicated to deal with the pain while a Tok’ra healing salve worked on the wound across the majority of his back. It was during this time that Daniel would start reliving this horrible event in his life, time and time again, each night in the form of a nightmare. Fast-Forward…present… Having regained his composure, Daniel took the glass sitting by the sink, popped a Valium in his mouth and swallowed a gulp of water to wash it down. Turning out the light and quietly opening the door, Daniel carefully slid back into bed. Before his head was even comfortably on the pillow, the blonde in his bed rolled-over and cuddled into his chest. Opening her blue eyes, she looked at Daniel and knew that he had had the nightmare again. “Was it the same nightmare?” she asked. “Are you okay?” “Yes, and I am okay. We had better get some sleep, it is only a few hours till you report back to the SGC.” Daniel responded and placed a kiss on her forehead. Within minutes, the lovely woman in his bed had wrapped a leg over his was fast asleep. Daniel lay there for what seemed like an eternity staring at the face of the woman next to him before sleep and the Valium claimed him. While Daniel slept, two beings of light hovered in the corner keeping a silent vigil over their charge. End Prologue Of
