The Rivergods, Hookah Kats
in a double bill at the Gee The Rivergods and the Hookah Kats are starting at 10 p.m. Saturday in New London's El'n'Gee Club. This is a curious bill, rather like ordering prawns in butterscotch, but it oughtta work out nonetheless. ********* Opening are the Hookah Kats, whose music might accurately be described in virtually any way the doesn't include the word country. A genial young trio comprising guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Roy Gorman, sax man John "Stitch" Kovach, and percussionist Rob Bernardo. The H-Kats seem thoroughly entertained by the idea of crashing original folk-rock structures into free-form jazz and R & B--all underpinned by Latin-leaning world rhythms. A relaxed trio onstage whose shows seem to invite the Hippie Aesthetics crowd, their songs come off with a sort of strange, hypnotic joy--like moonlit Cub Scouts who end some odd pagan ritual by deliberately flying their model airplanes into bricks walls. The results are generally pleasurable and
buoyantly mesmerizing.
