Tarnished Heroes Chapter Twenty-Four Step right up She’s A Beauty Wednesday Afternoon Mickey Burns cracked the school’s filter program. www.calliendanny.com Nicholas was far past the point of pissed off or irate or angry. He just sat at his computer staring at the rest of his class as they downloaded the files and watched them on the big screen. As his heart picked up speed and his breathing increased Nicholas realized he hadn’t known that there was an emotion stronger than being pissed off. There was. Yes there was. He didn’t have a name for the black thing that pitched and yawled inside of him but it was powerful and it was growing and if they didn’t shut that damn thing down…. “Ohmygod! Look at that!” Some girl squealed. Nicholas couldn’t help it he looked up over the top of the screen and saw what they did and more. His classmates saw his Mother and Father, Dad had her bent over the arm of the old couch, and he was fucking her hard from behind. Nicholas knew instantly that wasn’t Daniel Jackson. That was Uncle David, the real one and not that one that lived in Dad’s head. Incensed….yeah that was what he was feeling. Incense that was the name of the thing pitching and yawling in him. The screen the class was hunched over shattered. Glass flew everywhere. Several classmates caught sharp hot shards of it in the face as it exploded and steamed. The tower fried and caught fire. People screamed and ran away. The teacher, Mr. Adams, who’d been in the hall chatting up Ms. Thomas came rushing into the room and grabbed for the fire extinguisher. Nick just sat back and watched. Serves ‘em right. Assholes. After school, Nick sauntered out to the hot rod but before he could get the door open, a small arm wrapped around his waist. At first, he thought it was his Mother but he looked down to see Anna standing there. “Haven’t seen you in a while.” She said shyly and rested her head against his side. “I missed you.” “I missed you too. Need a ride?” Anna nodded her pretty blonde head and Nick walked around to open the passenger door for her. “I’m sorry I haven’t called you, Annie, things have been really fucked up.” “I know, I’m sorry, Nick. If I can do anything for you or your mom…..” “Thanks.” Nick shut the door and climbed in behind the wheel. He could hardly stand looking at her as he started the car. Poor sweet little Annie, he’d been such an asshole to screw Tammy behind her back. Prom was Friday night and he’ d make it up to her then, well, that was if she still wanted to go with him. He and Colleen had become Outcasts maybe she’d rather go with someone else. Little Annie seemed to read his mind. “I heard about what happened in computer class.” She said quietly and he turned to look at her as they pulled out of the high school parking lot. “They said you were smoldering as much as the computer.” Annie started to laugh. “Are you ok, Nick?” “Yeah, I’m good. They shouldn’t have been lookin’ at my Mom.” “No they shouldn’t have. It was rude and thoughtless, I’m glad the damn thing blew up o them.” She agreed immediately. “Are we still going Friday night?” “You still want to go with me?” “Of course!” Annie cried. “Why wouldn’t I? Because of all that crap? Let ‘em talk, they’re just idiots with small minds.” She told him and her voice turned softer. “I love you, Nicky.” God, I am such an asshole! Why don’t you just shove a dagger in my heart? That would be kinder! “I love you too, Annie.” Unlike Sandy, Nicholas actually meant it. He reached out and pulled her close as they drove down the road. “I’m sorry I’ve been ignoring you.”
Sandy, against Nick’s wishes, hung around after school waiting for Colleen to come out from the girls’ locker room after swim practice. He’d tried to call her a dozen times and never got anything more than a busy signal or voice mail. At the moment, he really was The King of All Jackasses but that was true but he wasn’t the only reason no one was answering the phone at the Jackson house. Mrs. Jackson was everywhere from the Internet to local news, national news, and the Supermarket Tabloids. The door to the girls’ locker room opened and Colleen and a bunch of her friends came through it. “Hey, Cole.” “What do you want? Go away.” She said and passed him by. “I just….I just….I just wanna talk to you for a second.” He called after her. “Please, Cole, just a second. They can wait for you.” “Go on, I’ll catch up,” she said to the group of girls, “in just one minute.” She added in a louder voice. Terry, one of the girls in the group, knew what happened between Cole, Sandy and Nick. “We’ll be right down the hall,” she whispered. “If you need us just scream.” Terry stuck her tongue out at Sandy as the three girls disappeared around the corner. “All right, what do you want?” Colleen asked and planted her hands on her hips. OK, moment of truth, here we go. “I just wanna say I’m sorry,” Sandy said in a low voice, “ya know, about all that shit. I really do like you, Cole, I dunno know if I’m in love with you but I do like you. I was stupid and I’m sorry.” Well, that was unexpected. “You bet you were stupid, I can’t believe you did that to me!” “I’m sorry! Look, I’ll tell all the guys I was lyin’ if that’s what you want.” Sandy offered. “I know that, like, we’re not, like, goin’ out or nothing more, but I thought maybe, ya know just maybe, you’d still go to the Prom with me?” “What?” With the exception of regretting not getting to wear the absolutely gorgeous gown Mom brought home from New York, Prom was one of the last things on her mind. Then again, she did have that nice dress and Mom paid a small fortune for it, she’d seen the price tag. Why shouldn’t she make him pay for a fancy dinner and flowers after what he did? Colleen wasn’t sure if Nick was still going to the Prom but she’d talked with Annie earlier and Annie was still interested in going, all that little girl had to do was bat those big brown eyes at Nick and he’d take her. “Sure, I’d love to.” Colleen returned with a smile. “Same plans? Pick me up at 6:30?” Sandy was almost too stunned to agree with her, he thought for sure she would turn him down. “Yeah, 6:30. I’ll be there.” “I’ll be waiting.” Colleen walked off to join her friends.
