Chapter Thirty-Two

Off World
Saturday Morning

Samantha Carter survived her night in the forest and was very grateful to see the dawn over the mountaintops. She’d heard noises all night long, that thing swam and flipped around in the water off in the distance and every now and then, the ground beneath her shook and shuttered as though someone dropped a heavy object nearby. When she fell into what she thought was a ditch, Sam soon realized what that heavy object was. The ditch was a footprint longer than she was. There was a whole trail of them, Bacchus said the Cyclops lived here and while she didn’t know much about Greek Mythology, the Cyclops was a popular one and she knew it was gigantic and had one eye, according to legend it liked the taste of human flesh. Sam hoped it found something else for breakfast this morning.

Greenbrier, Colorado

Colleen was a little late coming home after all and she was afraid of the chewing out she was going to receive when she walked through the front door as she kissed Sandy good-night. Mom’s car wasn’t in the driveway. “What time is it?”

Sandy looked down at his watch, “Almost 5, sorry to get you home so late.”

“Will you come in with me?” Colleen asked and opened the car door.

“Um, yeah, sure, you want to smooth things over with your mom?” Sandy asked and let himself out of the car.

“No, stupid she isn’t here. Her car’s gone.”

Sandy looked around and didn’t see the red Integra or the hot rod, seemed Nick hadn’t come home yet. He was probably exploring Annie Wilkes’ panties somewhere but Nick was a rare breed none of the guys would ever hear about it from him.

“Mom? Mom?” Colleen called out as they walked around the empty messy house. “What the hell happened in here?” The kitchen sink was piled with dirty dishes and broken glasses. There was white powder on the coffee table and several empty bottles of wine. “Hartley.” She muttered and ran for the stairs. “Mom!”

“Cole, hey, calm down, huh? Maybe she just, ya know, went out.” Sandy said in a voice that tried to be reassuring but even he knew Mrs. Jackson didn’t leave the house at this early hour and she certainly didn’t return to it at this time either. He ran up the stairs after her.

The door to her bedroom was open; Calla’s glass pipe was sitting in the middle of the messy bed, the nightstand drawer still open. She turned around and saw the used needles on the small table by the chaise lounge. “Oh Christ! Sandy!” She called out and he stuck his head into the room. “Is that what I think it is?” She pointed at the table.

“Holy shit!”

Colleen opened her clutch and pulled out her cell phone she punched in Nick’s number and it rang in her ear and in his room. He’d left the phone home last night. “Stupid brother!” She flipped the phone shut. “Where’s my Mother? What did he do with her?”

“Who?”

“Hartley!” Colleen screamed. “That son of a bitch has been trying to get her since she got back from New York. I know he was here last night I can smell him.”

Sandy, of course, thought she meant that she could smell the mans’ cologne but that wasn’t what she meant at all. “Calm down, Cole, just calm down. Wherever she is I’m sure your mom’s fine.” No, he wasn’t sure of that but it sounded good and he hoped she’d relax a little bit but she didn’t.

“I have to find my brother.”

“All right, we’ll drive around and look for him.”

She had a more effective way of finding him. “I have to use the bathroom.” Colleen walked into the master bath and shut the door. Nicky! Nicky! Oh come on answer me.

Nicholas had been comfortably sleeping with Annie in his arms when his sisters’ voice started screaming in his head and he jolted to wakefulness. Annie jumped in his arms but continued to sleep. Cole? What?

You have to come home…now! Mom’s gone.

What do you mean she’s gone? He looked at his own watch. I just talk to her…now that he thought about it that was about five hours ago. Time just flew by when you were in the arms of someone you loved.

Nicky? In his head, her voice was small and afraid.

What? He didn’t know if he wanted to hear the answer.

She…she…she was bootin’ up with him last night. There are needles on the table.

Oh fuck me! Nick tossed the covers off and woke Annie up. I’m on my way. “Annie, honey, we gotta go.”

“What’s wrong?” She mumbled and rolled over.

“My mom’s missing.”

“What?” Annie sat straight up no longer sleepy or dreaming of making love with Nick.

“My sister called I gotta go home.” He didn’t have to say it twice; Annie was out of the bed and grabbing for the wrinkled gown in no time. A few moments later they were walking through the Queen Anne Bed & Breakfast with the smells of eggs and French toast in their noses. The cook was up early and making ready for the Breakfast part of B&B. Through the front door, the first thing Nicholas saw was Andrew Hartley’s rental car. Maybe Mom was closer than any of them thought. “Go on, I forgot something.” He told Annie and went to the front desk to inquire where Hartley was staying. Nicholas was directed back down the hall from which he’d come and to the room across the hall from where he’d spent the night with Annie.

Bang. Bang. Bang. “Open up, Hartley.” Bang. Bang. Bang. “Now!”

Andrew dragged himself from the empty bed and to the annoying noise at his door. “Nicholas?” His eyes were bleary and bloodshot as he rubbed the sleep out of them.

“Where’s my Mother? She in there?”

Calla? Where was Calla? They’d had a nice time last night and he was about to get his first fuck from her when the…. “Your father’s missing.” He mumbled and watched Nicholas’ face fall. “She went after him late last night. I don’t know where or how. She’s not here.”

“You let her go?” Nick shoved the Brit into his room, followed him and shut the door. “You got her strung out, booted her up with fucking heroin and then you just let her go off…alone…into the night?!”

“I couldn’t bloody well stop her,” Andy muttered as he back away from the oversized teenager.

“No, I guess not.” Nick said snidely as he looked the man up and down. “You were just as fucked up as her, weren’t you?”

“Not quite that bad.” Andy smiled and tried to make light of the situation. His smart mouth got him and trouble and Nicholas shut it for him.

Nicholas landed a hard right cross on Andy’s jaw and the Brit crumpled to the floor. “If you ever go near my Mother again I swear to God I’ll kill you.” Wanting nothing more than to stay there and beat the man to a bloody pulp, Nicholas grabbed the door handle and let himself out.

Colleen! Colleen!

What? Are you on your way? Can’t you just zap yourself here?

Listen to me, Dad’s missing, Mom went after him. You gotta call the SGC and see if she went through the Gate. I’m on my way now.

How do you know that?

Hartley told me. Nicholas cut off the line in his head as he climbed into the car. “I gotta take you to my house, ok?”

“Yeah, fine. What are you waiting for? Let’s go.” Annie said hurriedly.

In the early morning hours the four teenagers sat around the Jackson house. Colleen changed out of the gown and was in pair of shorts and white t-shirt, she had a pot of fresh coffee brewing when Nick and Annie arrived and they were going to need it. “Did you get a hold of ‘em?” He asked as he tossed the tuxedo jacket to the couch and took his sister into the kitchen leaving Annie in the living room with Sandy.

Colleen waited until they got into the kitchen before answering him. “They let her go through. They said they didn’t have much choice, she took an MP hostage and shook the entire SGC building until they opened the Stargate.”

“Mom? Did all of that?”

“I guess. She must have been pretty high.” In either of their heads there was no doubt about the truth in Colleens’ statement. “What do we do?”

“Wait,” Nick told her. “You know how much she loves Dad, she’ll bring him home Cole and we’ll all go from there.”

“When Dad finds out about Hartley and the smack?” She asked with wet eyes.

“Hey, big guy,” Sandy said from the doorway. “Any news?” Silence was the only answer to his question. “We’re just worried, ya know? I mean that psycho’s out there somewhere he killed Dyer and Booker, ya don’t think he’s got your mom, do you? Maybe we should call the police or somethin’.” Sandy suggested with genuine concern.

If word about her sudden disappearance got out, that’s exactly what the press and police would think that Mom had come to an untimely end at the hands of the same man who off’d Booker and Dyer. They’d have field day with that story! It would be far too juicy for them to pass up drugs and infidelity would become synonymous with his Mother’s name. “No.” Nick said thoughtfully. “My Dad’s in trouble and my Mom went after him.”

“To Japan?” Sandy asked in an unbelieving voice. “Half strung out on smack?”

“If you tell anyone, Sandy, I swear….” Nick took big strides toward him.

“Whoa, whoa, back it up, big guy, I won’t tell anybody. I learned my lesson.” Sandy held his hands up in front of his face to block any coming blows. Nick stopped and backed off. “All’s I’m sayin’ is, what does she think she’s gonna do for him?”

“I don’t know.” Nick admitted. “Cole and me we gotta go to the base and see what we can find out.” He looked past Sandy to Annie who was standing behind him. “Annie you want to wait here?”

“Yeah I’ll hang out here if you don’t mind.” She said and brushed past Sandy to stand by Nicholas. “I’ll straighten up and stuff.”

“What are you gonna do?” He asked Sandy.

“Go home, get out of this monkey suit and I’ll be back in a few hours. That all right with you?”

Sandy looked like he was actually offering to help; Nick didn’t want to turn him away they might need some help when, and if his parents got back. “Annie if that phone rings don’t answer it unless it’s us, ok? Goddamn press gets wind of this and that phone will be ringing off the hook again.”

“Ok,” Annie said. She stayed behind while they rest of them headed out the door.

Off World

“Your friend doesn’t look very well,” Medea chimed as she looked over at Teal’c who was bathed in a heavy sweat and struggling to breathe.

“He’s got an infection.” Daniel told her. “He needs medicine.” Without a symbiote to keep him healthy any longer and having not been given his supply trutonin Teal’c was in bad shape.

“Perhaps I should just eat him before he spoils completely?” She suggested. “Waste not want not.” Medea smiled at him from the other side of the bars.

“Maybe you should help him,” Jack grumbled from his cell.

“Jack! Jack!” Daniel shouted. It was the first time his commanding officer woke in a full day.

Jack rolled onto his side and then struggled to his feet. His head was light and there was a terrible stabbing pain in his neck.

“I see you’re feeling better, General O’Neill.” Medea said lightly. “That’s good news,” she turned back to Daniel, “it means I won’t run out of tasty eats in the near future. So perhaps you and your own tasty morsel are safe for a while longer?” Medea walked away from the bars off down the small space between the cells and stared in at Teal’c. His bandage was soaked with blood and even from here; she could feel the fever raging inside him. Yes, it probably was best to kill this one and preserve the meat before it all went rotten on her. Taking the metal key ring from the belt at her waist, Medea began to open the cell door but a sound stopped her. There was someone walking around in her house. Well that was an interesting development. “Don’t go away, I’ll be right back.” She quickly made her way to the steps, which lead to her kitchen, shutting the heavy oak door behind her.

“You all right?” Daniel asked with concern as he stared across the cell bars at Jack who didn’t look so good.

“Ah,…..no!” Jack returned and put his hand on the sore area of his neck where he found two puncture wounds. “What is she? A vampire?”

“I don’t know,” Daniel muttered, “something along those lines, I guess.”

There were shuffling sounds coming from the ceiling above. “Who do you suppose it is?” Jack asked.

“Sam, it’s gotta be Sam.” Daniel told him.

“Let’s hope she gets us outta here. I can’t take this anymore, Daniel.”

You? Daniel thought to himself and then felt guilty about it. Jack hadn’t been awake to watch Medea weave her seductive magick nor had he been the one who had to sit here completely healthy without a damn thing wrong with him while the bitch slowly consumed his friends.

A huge crash was heard, a woman screamed, more crashing, more tussling and more screaming followed. Both men’s hearts raced as they gripped the bars and began to shout that they were alive and in the cells below those upstairs.

“Help!

“We’re down here!”

“Help! Get us outta here!”

They shook the bars and rattled metal cups against the metal bars to make noise. Just as the din grew the sounds upstairs ceased. The haunting sound of footsteps on the stairs came to their ears. Slowly the heavy oak door opened and a blond head appeared.

“Carter!” Jack shouted.

“I take it this belongs to you?” Medea asked as she dragged Sam through the door and dropped her limp body by one of the empty cells. “Looks like I’ll be fat and happy all winter.” She cooed and flashed a bloody grin while opening the cell door and then dragging Sam inside. “I’ll let you get reacquainted. I have stew to start.” The sorceress disappeared through the door once more.

“Carter wake up!” Jack shouted.

“Sam, can you hear me? Sam?” Daniel shouted in return.

Teal’c groaned at the noise and tried to move but was unsuccessful.

Sam just laid there; her face was bloody where Medea bit a chunk out of her cheek.

“We’re never gonna get outta here.” Jack bemoaned and sat down on the filthy hay.

That wasn’t altogether true. Daniel could get out of his cell if he made Medea think he would fuck her. If he let her seduce him the next time she tried. One thing was for certain he couldn’t do a damn thing from this side of the bars. If he could get her to let him out of the cell then there was at least a chance of getting the rest of them free as well. Medea was disgustingly beautiful with her deep doe eyes and her curly black hair. Those eyes showed depths of insanity previously unknown to Daniel Jackson and he had to find a way to be like Calla. To see it for what it was, all of it, and then use it to his very best advantage. Just like she used to do with Kanan and his Darkness; dig down for it, turn it round and round have a good hard look and then figure out how to turn it against him. That’s what he had to do with her.

Gross.

Like his wife, Daniel hadn’t eaten in a few days—not since she served up the stew that tasted so good but knocked everyone and Teal’c woke up sans a kidney. As a result he was starving and getting weak. All that physical activity beforehand didn’t help much either. He didn’t dare sleep in this place for fear that either would wake up missing a vital—or tasty—organ or that he wouldn’t wake up at all. Daniel thought the second was probably kinder so it was less apt to happen.

On the floor of the cell next to him, Sam moaned and began to move. “Sam. Hey, Sam, wake up.” Daniel coached.

“Ohhh,” she groaned and her hand went to the wound on her cheek. There was blood everywhere and it felt as though half of her face were on fire. Staggering first to her knees and then to her feet she made her way to the bars.

Christ she looked awful. Gaping wound on her cheek and dark bruises spreading from it up to a bloodshot blue eye. “You all right? What happened?”

“Something grabbed SG-3.” She said as she tried to remember. “It came out of the water and ate them.”

Jack made it back to the bars of his cell to look and listen. “That Hydra-thing?”

“Must have been.” Sam agreed in a low voice. The pain in her face wasn’t allowing her to think very well. “Is it as bad as I think?” She asked Daniel.

It was pretty fucking bad. “You’re gonna be fine, Sam.” Daniel told her and reached through the bar for her hand. Medea hadn’t bothered to bandage the wound and if they didn’t get out of her, she’d get an infection like Teal’c and she wouldn’t be very fine then.

Sam knew he was lying but that was all right now. “I got here, there’s something big in the woods, and I tripped in its footstep.” She rubbed her empty stomach. “I smelled something cooking.”

Jack let out a snort. “Probably Teal’cs’ kidney.”

“His what?” Sam looked through the bars to the sweating groaning man in the cell across the way. Her empty stomach pitched. “He doesn’t look so good.” She looked over at Jack. “Neither do you, sir, if you don’t mind my saying so.”

“He’s the organ department, I’m the blood bank.” Jack shot at her. “Looks like you were a mid-day snack.”

“You?” She looked over at Daniel.

“Nothing wrong with him.” Jack said. “Is there, Danny? She hasn’t touched you.”

“No, she just keeps taunting me, trying to…I don’t know…seduce me… into giving her the Gate Address to Earth.” All around him, his friends were in dire straights and he was just fine. Daniel had to do something to get them out of here. “Personally I think that would be a bad thing.”

“No shit,” Jack shot. “She’ll be making mince meat out of the SGC and dessert out of the rest.”

“So what’s the plan?” Sam asked and ripped off a fairly clean section of her t-shirt; she held it to her face to stop the bleeding and sat down.

“Haven’t got one.” Jack said and found the floor beneath him. “Danny?”

“I got one.”

“Better be good, smells like dinner’s just about ready.”
