Tarnished Heroes Chapter Eight She had a dream
“There you are.” Daniel said with a smile as he came into the kitchen and then looked down at his watch. “A little late, aren’t ya?” Looking down at her watch, she saw that she was indeed about twenty minutes late in getting home. “I had a chat with my students after class. Did you make any progress with your tablet?” “As a matter of fact, I did.” Daniel said happily. “Thanks to you.” He couldn’t say he understood the damn thing yet but Calla was right if you kept turning the damn thing this way and that, different symbols popped up. Ancient Greek, Ancient Egyptian, even what looked like Cyrillic and some Norse symbols. Still it was nothing that seemed to go together in any sort of pattern or make much sense. Daniel had sketched the tablet onto a piece of grid paper and spent the evening transcribing the symbols onto it with their English counterparts. Overall, it looked like some type of ancient coded message. “Are you discovering something new and wonderful?” “I already did.” Daniel slid one hand on each of her hips. “Is that fresh coffee I smell?” Calla kept her head down so that her breath didn’t come to him. “Yeah, you hate decafe so I made regular but it’s Friday and we don’t have to work tomorrow….” “You’re not going in?” She asked genuinely surprised. Daniel went to the base a lot on Saturdays and given the fact he’d brought a new artifact home with him she was sure he’d spend the entire weekend holed up in his office working on it. “No I’m going to stay home. That all right with you?” Daniel asked and looked at her in a strange way. Something was really off tonight. “I thought we’d have coffee, ok?” “Sounds divine.” She cooed. “I reek of thinner and paint.” Calla held up her hands so he could see the multi-colored paint on them. “Let me pop into a quick shower and I’ll come down and sit with you.” “Why don’t you take a long shower and I’ll bring it upstairs?” He countered. Calla reached out to wrap her arms around him. “You really are my angel.” She said and gave a good squeeze after which she held on for a few moments. “And all these years I thought you were my angel.” Daniel kissed the top of her head and he could actually feel something bubbling around in her. Something she was not going to tell him. Well, not without a lot of provocation. “Everything all right?” “Just fine. A little tired.” She planted a kiss in that deep crevice between his pecs. Daniel always smelled so good. It wasn’t his after-shave or his soap or the shave cream he used, not even the laundry detergent. No, it was just him. “Is Colleen home?” “She came in a little while ago. Nick’s still out.” “Ok. See you in a few minutes.” Calla let go of him and walked away. “Or sooner.” He mumbled as she went up the stairs. Calla stripped off her clothes and buried in the hamper before jumping into a very hot shower. Under the jets of water, she scrubbed herself clean head to toe quickly as she could. She brought the toothbrush into the shower with her so she didn’t have to waste any time, she scrubbed her entire mouth while rinsing the conditioner out of her hair. “Shit,” she mumbled and opened the shower door. Half blind with conditioner running into her eyes Calla reached out for the mouthwash that was on the sink. “This what you want?” Daniel put the bottle of Scope into her groping hand. “Thank you.” She said taking the bottle from his hand and closing the door. He was here already well that was just par for the course. He’d been suspicious before she left the house. Calla really hoped his suspicion would die down as he pored over the stupid tablet the rest of the night but, well, obviously she was wrong. “Water’s a little warm, isn’t it?” Daniel asked in a guarded voice as he waved his hand in the air trying to clear the steam away from his face. “Just trying to get the paint off.” She explained from behind the closed shower door. Go away, give me ten minutes! “Coffee’s ready when you get out.” Daniel told her and left the bathroom. Eighteen years you’d think she’d know better than to try to play these games with him. Oh, well, it had been a while since they’d had a rousing game of Cat ‘n’ Mouse, he was up for it. Placing one cup of fresh coffee on either side of the bed he turned down the covers, climbed in and waited patiently for his wife to join him. Calla turned off the hot water and stood under the blasting cold jets rinsing her body clean and removing the pinkish hue to her flesh. Satisfied that she’d gotten every nook and cranny she began running her tongue over her teeth to feel that smooth shiny feeling, oh so much better than that awful scum and minty-vomit taste she’d had earlier. Calla shut the water off completely and took a good look in the mirror before venturing out into the bedroom. “Not too bad.” She mumbled. Wrapping the robe around her and taking one last second to settle herself she opened the door. “There all better now.” She sighed happily as she emerged from the bathroom doorway shiny and clean. “Oh, you’re home.” Coley said with mock surprise as she stuck her head in her parents’ bedroom door. “I was home on time tonight.” “That’s good, did you have fun?” Calla asked and reached out to hug her daughter. “Yeah, sure, in the time allotted anyway.” Coley huffed and rolled her eyes. “I thought we’d go out tomorrow and look for a gown.” Calla asked hoping her daughter would take the olive branch she was offering. “Yeah?” Coley asked. “Can we go look at Deb’s?” It was an upscale store where all the Cool Kids shopped. Colleen knew her mother hated the clothes in the store but they were selling some nice prom dresses this year. “If you want.” Calla agreed. “Maybe we could go to Taj also?” She asked. The Taj Boutique sold more elegant formal wear than Deb’s and Calla thought her daughter would look stunning in an off the shoulder gown perhaps an emerald green or even a dark blue. Well, it looked like Dad had gone to bat for her after all. Mom wasn’t ready to give in all the way just yet but when they went shopping, they would have a conversation and Colleen thought she might get to stay out past two anyway. That was good enough for her. “Sounds good mom. Night.” She kissed Calla’s cheek and reached over her mother for her father. “Night Dad.” She hugged him tight. “Thank you.” She whispered in his ear. “Love you pumpkin.” He kissed her cheek. “Good night.” “Well, if you’re going to take her around tomorrow, I guess I’ll take Nick out to get his tux. Remember you promised not to say anything to him.” Daniel said after Coley left the room and got up to shut the bedroom door. The kids were very good about that; open bedroom door, don’t bother to knock just come in. Closed bedroom door; stop and listen before knocking. As the door shut, he realized she wasn’t giving him a hassle over that bit. “Did the class give you problems tonight?” Calla did not look relieved the way he thought she should instead she looked harried and it wasn’t just Coley, Calla looked that way before she left tonight. He climbed back into the bed next to her. “No of course they didn’t, they’re all very nice.” She reached for the fresh coffee and took a long relaxing sip. Putting it back on the nightstand, she opened the drawer and fished inside for another little calm-me-down, her pipe and weed. “I’m getting old, Daniel, I’m tired. Maybe you really should start shopping around for those younger models I’ve still got a good deal of trade-in value.” Calla pushed a good bud into the pipe and lit it then passed it over to him. “Shut up.” He pushed the pipe away and kissed her. “You’re stuck with me; you’re not going to get out of this that easily.” Calla let out a laugh and exhale of smoke. “Well, I’m just saying you might not have much trouble finding another buyer.” “Another buyer? Over my dead body. Nobody drives this little red Ferrari but me.” Daniel reached out and took the pipe and lighter from her hand, Callas’ face furrowed. “Wait.” He said calmly. “You know what?” “What?” “You never did get that back rub last night.” He reminded her. “Why don’t you turn over and I’ll get to that now.” Daniel invited. A little weed, a little coffee, a little rub, she might be more inclined to tell him what was on her mind. Unfortunately for Daniel, a little weed, a little rub combined with the remainder of the alcohol in her blood system and Calla was out like in light in five minutes. End of Chapter Eight of |
